Fashion advice you've disagreed with

I'm interested in others views about conventional fashion advice that hasn't worked for them. I've got a couple:

  • I got a wardrobe consultation which was - for the best part - really worthwhile and fabulous. Yet the woman told me I ought to wear more block colours as they are more flattering, and while I do look slimmer in them I still feel better in patterns as feel lighter and more uplifted.
  • Get a fringe. Growing it back out was a year I'll never get back ...

Getting your colours done. I think it makes people look like they have a red-pink fevered face (and is pretty naff).
Black and blue don’t go: they do and it looks chic.
Taupe heels: awful look except on the duchess and she struggles to pull them off
Court shoes: look great in photos and sit still but terrible when you walk
Wrap dresses.
Anything jersey: unless it is weighted and thick it looks terrible (hush, primark etc).

Wingbing · 15/09/2018 10:48

Black and navy was my first thought too. I think it can look very chic. My manager really doesn’t.

I keep wearing it to wind him up.

lasttimeround · 15/09/2018 10:53

Black and navy - I love.
Dressing to disguise size. IMO you should think about shapes and lines not try to make everything look as small as possible

  1. no long hair on over 30/35/40+
  1. Bleaching is damaging to hair
  1. Don't shave your face! it will grow thicker!
  1. overlining lips
  1. cropped tops/shoulder holes/batwings
  1. Palazzo and harrem pants. comfy as hell though....
  1. satin/pyjama as going out wear
  1. dungarees
  1. hairy gorilla jackets and coats
  1. Eyelash extensions

  2. contouring

  3. no fringe if you have curly hair. or fringes are high maintenance

  4. trainers and dresses/skirts

  5. no ankle boots or shoe straps if your legs are chunky

  6. athleisure

  7. bomber jackets

  8. cigarette pants
    so much more...

Have a short haircut. Went from bra strap length to short bob last November. First time in my life I cried over hair. I have never felt so ugly. The cut didn't suit me at all. I should never, ever listen to my dm!

mostdays · 15/09/2018 10:57

I should add she insisted I should have it cut as I was 36 and too old for long messy hair.

BettyCrook · 15/09/2018 10:57

"dress for the body you have not the one you wish you had."
just.fuck.off.

MaisyPops · 15/09/2018 10:58

That every woman needs to have a nice white shirt in their work wardrobe. I've tried 3 times. It never gets worn. Never again.

That black is a staple colour and there is a little black dress for everyone. I'm still looking for mine and black up top looks bloody awful on me.

PurpleCurtains · 15/09/2018 11:08

Me too! I can't wear it without feeling ridiculous

OP posts:
loubluee · 15/09/2018 11:16

Me three! I’ve just put 3 in the charity bag that I haven’t worn but bought in the last 12 months. I’m admitting defeat!

AnaViaSalamanca · 15/09/2018 11:27

YY to the "crisp white shirt"! never worked for me either. Same for wrap dresses and putting belts over dresses to show your waist.

not exactly fashion advice but I disagreed with the bra measuring advice that I have been getting from everywhere, basically very very tight band and big cups. Didn't know how much back fat I had!

BinRaidingRaccoon · 15/09/2018 11:27

I can't wear them either, they just feel like school uniforms to me

MaisyPops · 15/09/2018 11:31

I'm not alone!!

I do like belts with dresses though. Everything waisted has a belt in my world (I dislike the lack of nice leather waisted belts. Too many seem to be big and embellished and that's not my thing).

Isentthesignal · 15/09/2018 11:31

I love my white supima cotton shirt from Uniqlo and I have several. I'm not supposed to as it's white and HOC have told me I'm an Autumn and I must not wear white, black or navy - I wear and love them all! So there! They have told me I look great in beige - really? I look dead in beige!
Gok Wan suggests that a belt or something tied around my middle would make my waist look smaller - I've got news for you Gok - if it achieves that (and I'm not at all convinced) it does so at the expense of making my tits and arse look enormous - why is that better?
And I have a long neck, and a small frame, so I wear polo necks even though I have big tits - black polo necks note HOC do not approve!

snowsun · 15/09/2018 11:40

I was told I couldn't wear anything loose knit !!! What does that mean ? How tight do the stitches need to be before I look reasonable in something ?
Love a baggy soft jumper and will be what I wear 80% of the winter loose knitted or not.

Westwing1 · 15/09/2018 11:40

Wrap dresses, everything ever said about them.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 15/09/2018 11:41

I have a white shirt from Uniqlo (one of the much applauded satiny ones) never worn it because my work wear is uniform.
But its there just in case I need something smart.

And I fell for the "its hair it'll grow" when I got my hair cropped. Yes it does grow, every bloody direction except downwards.

Ellapaella · 15/09/2018 13:03

Wearing trainers with everything. I get it's a trend etc etc but I really don't suit trainers. I have chunky ankles and a very short lower leg and trainers just look wrong on me.
But ask advice on what shoes to wear with what on here and everyone will automatically say trainers.
Practical yes, flattering - no.

thedevilinablackdress · 15/09/2018 13:05

The idea that the main point of clothes is to make you look as slim/sexy as possible. Fuck off Trinny and Susannah, I'll wear pleated peg trousers if I please.

PurpleCurtains · 15/09/2018 14:40

Agree devil. I enjoy clothes much more now I’m not obsessed with looking as slim as possible all the time. Some days I want to look cherry and fun not slinky and sexy

OP posts:
PurpleCurtains · 15/09/2018 14:42

Interesting about wrap dresses. I’m an hourglass so am always told I ought to wear them but often end up feeling chunky in them

OP posts:
BinRaidingRaccoon · 15/09/2018 14:53

Devil, high five. The obsession with lllking thin all the time made everything so joyless

Clionba · 15/09/2018 14:55

Wrap dresses are rarely flattering, same with wrap skirts, and they can both flap open at inconvenient times.....

Kaz2200 · 15/09/2018 15:16

I also agree with the 'wearing a belt shows off your waist' it certainly doesn't on me makes me look like a sack of potatoes tied in the middle.

Bluelady · 15/09/2018 15:32

I cheerfully ignore it all. If I like something I'll wear it.
