Fashion advice you've disagreed with

I'm interested in others views about conventional fashion advice that hasn't worked for them. I've got a couple:

  • I got a wardrobe consultation which was - for the best part - really worthwhile and fabulous. Yet the woman told me I ought to wear more block colours as they are more flattering, and while I do look slimmer in them I still feel better in patterns as feel lighter and more uplifted.
  • Get a fringe. Growing it back out was a year I'll never get back ...

The rules I break

Clashing colours, love navy & black & pink & red.

I find large prints can be quite flattering.

Baggy stuff can be slimming.

Some of the key basics of a capsule wardrobe eg nude courts, crisp white shirt, black suit will never be in my wardrobe.

In fact I own tons of shoes but no court shoes, so blah.

Never worn or owned a wrap dress, think they look matronly on me.

And no matter how slim I’ve been, skinny jeans look
way better or me then bootcut

CaptainBrickbeard · 16/09/2018 11:58

If I even think about wearing a white shirt, I spill coffee or tomato soup all over myself. Even if I’m not drinking either at the time.

The camel coat advice pisses me right off. I have silver hair and camel looks dreadful with it. And why would I want to look like everyone else anyway? I hate the "expensive" look, it lacks imagination and is incredibly ageing if you're over about 50.

Anything recommending wearing heels to look elegant/ladylike) slimmer. I would rather be comfortable, able to walk/run, not barefoot by the end of the evening and not ruin my feet.
(I know some people find them easy to walk in but fairly rare).

Agreed, devil I never wear high heels, yet manage in professional and formal settings. I dislike camel coats and beige trench coats. Dull.

storynanny · 16/09/2018 14:58

Agree with the " wrap dresses for big boobs" comment, they look hideous on my DD boobs.
I ignore anything which says shouldnt really be worn by over 50's. Im 61 and size 12 and love wearing Jeggings with a longish top. The young girls in my family would tell me if it was a no no
Wish I hadnt succumbed to libg hair chop in my 50's, loved twisting it up and off out in 5 mins. I dont have the sort of wash, shake and go in 5 minutes hair.
I dont like grey hair on myself, so no stylist will be getting me to embrace it, Ill be having my roots done in the care home!

Black and navy is chic. Use that a lot.

Aspenfrost · 16/09/2018 15:48

You can wear camel coats with much more casual skirts, striped tops and so on. I adore them.

mimibunz · 16/09/2018 16:00

Black and navy together can look great in the right fabric but mostly looks awkward, especially when the undertones are off.

I always thought the saying was "pink and green"?
