Fashion advice you've disagreed with

I'm interested in others views about conventional fashion advice that hasn't worked for them. I've got a couple:

  • I got a wardrobe consultation which was - for the best part - really worthwhile and fabulous. Yet the woman told me I ought to wear more block colours as they are more flattering, and while I do look slimmer in them I still feel better in patterns as feel lighter and more uplifted.
  • Get a fringe. Growing it back out was a year I'll never get back ...

i also agree white shirts never get them to fit, and trainers just dont suit me, waist belts make me look like sack of potatoes too. its not that i am a big girl, at 5/3 tall and 9 stone.

MaisyPops · 15/09/2018 18:13

PurpleCurtains
Whereas in quite petite framed so love wrap dresses (even though style rules say they should look horrible on me).

cushiony · 15/09/2018 19:13

There is a 'stylist' on Instagram / Facebook who insists that all tops must be TUCKED IN. Despite any tummy overhang.

I could go on. She dishes out a lot of shocking advice.

KatharinaRosalie · 15/09/2018 19:40

"Big boobs - wrap dresses are fabulous on you!" - sure, if you're aiming for the 'here's my chest, the rest is coming' look.

kristinav · 15/09/2018 19:52

Some of the 'How to look expensive' advice. No you won't look expensive, you'll look like a a sheep wearing clothes that don't suit you.

Tucked in tops. No shit the top looks better not finishing at a pear's widest point. Have the top tailored.

toffee1000 · 15/09/2018 20:04

Ive never done a proper colour consultation (far too much money and I don’t fancy hanging around for hours watching strangers getting theirs done), so have only done online ones. Apparently I’m an autumn and suit brown... ugh, no thanks. I don’t want to walk around looking like a turd. There were very few blues in the palette too, which was surprising as I get told I really suit blue.

I hate clothes shopping and endlessly walking around trying stuff on, but I do know what I like/dislike.

I don’t mind wrap dresses. I only own one and haven’t worn it much though.

goose1964 · 15/09/2018 21:08

Let's look longer in heels, they just cripple you and shorten the tendons in you lower leg.

Fringes make you look younger, last time I had a fringe it ended up as a tight curl and just looked silly

Clionba · 15/09/2018 21:08

Those colour consultations are a bit hit and miss, I think. What if your shades aren't available in the shops this season? Also, I think you can wear any colour really, if you like the outfit and feel good, you'll look great.

LunaTheCat · 15/09/2018 21:40

“Blue and green should never be seen” - I wear this combination a lot and always get positive comments.

Elementally · 15/09/2018 21:49

Blue and green should never be seen

Isn't it red and green? Has to be admitted that is quite a full on look.

LunaTheCat · 16/09/2018 00:18

elementally you may be right . Although I think the blue and green thing came from my Mum. (She had funny ideas)

PurpleCurtains · 16/09/2018 00:33

I liked my colour consult tbh but there is less in the shops to buy now

Applepudding2018 · 16/09/2018 00:45

@LunaTheCat @Elementally yes the saying is 'blue and green should never be seen ' and I also wear this combination and think it looks good.

AnotherDIYSunday · 16/09/2018 09:13

'Pear shapes shouldn't wear skinny or straight jeans / trousers, boot-cut and wide-leg are much more flattering and will balance out your hips and thighs'.
Err, no, they just me look fat all over and give me elephant legs. No thanks.

Also, many of the pastel colours that should suit a summer like me according to HOC make me look really washed out and are seriously frumpy anyways.

And I very much agree with pp that black and navy can be great together!

ipswichwitch · 16/09/2018 09:21

The whole “empire line dresses hide your tummy” thing. Nope, just makes me look permanently pregnant. Same for high waisted jeans allegedly being great at flattening the tummy. They just give me a waist that’s too high up and, bizarrely, camel toe. So attractive!

BettyCrook · 16/09/2018 09:28

oh i love a high waisted it holds me in Grin

agree with empire waist though. makes me look very pregnant and makes my stomach bigger not hide it.

BettyCrook · 16/09/2018 09:30

skinny jeans = carrot or parsnip legs..errr yes thats what most legs actually look like! better than tree trunk in straight/gf/bf/mom jeans
it shows off shapely calves and most men i know/knew actually like thicker legs anyway.

Verbena87 · 16/09/2018 09:35

The idea that the main point of clothes is to make you look as slim/sexy as possible.

Amen to this. Start by rejecting this nonsense and you’re onto a winner.

Sallygoroundthemoon · 16/09/2018 09:38

Black and brown should never be found. Sod that. I wore black jeans and boots with my favourite brown coat last week and felt bloody marvelous (and had compliments).

Elledorado · 16/09/2018 09:49

"The idea that the main point of clothes is to make you look as slim/sexy as possible."

This ^^ 100 x over.

AuntyJackiesBrothersSistersBoy · 16/09/2018 10:16

Well, I’m “invisible” anyway, being over the “slim & sexy” age group. Mostly, I’m comfy. Never wear heels as my feet are fucked.

Agree with the “get a bob/ pixie” comments, it was the worst advice EVER. I felt very exposed and hated that I couldn’t just tie my hair up and go. I HAD to “do” my hair ( and it still felt shit).

“Bootcut jeans are your friend if you have less than perfect pins” No. They made me look very dumpy.

JungWan · 16/09/2018 10:23

Advice to spend a lot of money on a white shirt. No, very boring, I don't have an iron and being an autumn, white doesn't look good on me.
Every capsule wardrobe suggests a white shirt and a camel coat forgetting that these colours don't flatter everybody.

Skyejuly · 16/09/2018 10:42

I cant wear shirts either. They look great on models and then I dont like it when it arrives. Apparently I should wear heels as 5ft 1 but I NEVER wear heels.

I threw out my wrap dresses as didnt like them on my small boobs.

Apparently I can wear shirts due to small chest but I look horrid in them. I also have a tummy and large bum so I usually wear baggy top and skinny jeans.

MaryKateWA · 16/09/2018 11:04

Waterfall cardigans on curvy women. Adds bulk to the wrong part of the body.

thedevilinablackdress · 16/09/2018 11:36

Agree on the white shirts. I KNOW white doesn't suit me but still get sucked in thinking I want/need one.
