Your tips please for at home manicures and general nail maintenance

I've never looked after my nails well and they aren't in the best condition as a result. Your insight on manicures and general nail maintenance would be much appreciated.

File, buff, moisturise religiously.
I do my own nails, and they are my three top tips.
Also, base coat and top coat if painting them.
