reasonably priced children's winter coats that are waterproof?

Hi everyone, apologies if this isn't the write topic board to post on...

It's that time of year again where both kids have either worn out or grown out of last years winter coats, (age 6 and 2), and I would like to get them some coats that are properly waterproof as we walk for an hour + per day usually in all weathers.

So far I have tried lots of shower resistant winter coats, and haven't had success with any of them keeping the kids dry, even in 'showers'. I have also bought myself a Regatta waterproof winter coat which had good reviews online - but this is now leaky around the seams after wearing it for one winter/spring which has made me dubious about Regatta as a brand...

So should I buy rain resistant ones from anywhere I like, (M&S, Asda etc.) and buy some waterproofing spray and spray that on the coats, (I haven't used it but have heard about it), or buy a particular brand to make sure that the kids don't arrive at school and nursery wet through?

We have had several hatley coats with terry lining that are very good and almost always waterproof - but they aren't warm enough for winter use for my two unfortunately.

Thanks in advance!

Ski jackets from H&M are usually both warm and waterproof.
Or if you can stretch to Didriksons or Reima or Skogstad (all online) they’ve all been perfect for us. (Yorkshire. Wet and cold)

SunnySomer · 13/09/2018 21:46

Btw. If the Scandinavian ones look too expensive, keep an eye on the websites at end of season and buy for next year.

TheFifthKey · 13/09/2018 21:46

I go to Mountain Warehouse outlet stores - always a decent range and really reasonable prices too. DS has one of those with a detachable fleece layer and I’m sure it was only about £20. Washes well and does the job.

TeaAndNoSympathy · 13/09/2018 21:47

I swear by Trespass for waterproof coats.

ConsiderHerWaysAndOthers · 13/09/2018 21:48

I tend to go for the outdoor wear brands like North Face, Columbia etc. You can get some bargains in the sale or on Amazon especially if you’re not too fussy on the colour- I just bought DD a new Columbia jacket on Amazon for 60% less than the same jacket costs on the Columbia website.

Givemestrengthorgin · 13/09/2018 21:50

H&M usually do a good waterproof/windproof winter coat.

Easynow · 13/09/2018 21:58

This coat is by far the best I have ever got for DD. There is a smaller size 3-4 as well as a seperate item.

I went back & got DD another one for next year as it really is warm, not sweaty, waterproof, no wet bottom from dripping rain, and cosy.

I got my 10 year old ds a brilliant Slazenger coat from sports direct last year...warm, waterproof and was only £17!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 13/09/2018 22:02

H&M technical outerwear is brilliant and if you can hang on a few weeks it's usually discounted.

YerAuntFanny · 13/09/2018 22:06

I bought an Aldi ski jacket last winter for DD and it's been great, we walk everywhere in all weathers as I don't drive and she's always been warm and dry with it.

So many ideas, absolutely fantastic - thanks everyone.

I really appreciate it! Much better than shopping around blindly and ending up with soggy children!

The Trespass outlet on eBay & Amazon has some really good coats.

Mummydoctor · 13/09/2018 22:26

Polarn O Pyret are amazing for kids outdoor wear. It’s expensive full price but there are sometimes offers on such as 20% off. There is also a Facebook resale page where you can catch a bargain.

Missnearlyvintage · 13/09/2018 22:43

Easynow - I've just ordered one of those trespass coats you linked to in age 3-4 for my DD thank you. I couldn't say no for the price and there was only one left in my local store so had to nab it!

Now to hunt for my 6 yo's...

Thanks again everyone

Trespass is our go too great coats

Holymosquito · 13/09/2018 23:00

lidl have their thermal waterproofs in this week. Less than a tenner! We’ve had them several years running now and the DCs have always stayed dry.

TheSpottedZebra · 13/09/2018 23:01

Yep, another vote for Lidl's from me too.

OneWildNightWithJBJ · 13/09/2018 23:02

I buy my kids ski jackets from Trespass. They're usually around £20.

OwThatsGottaHurt · 13/09/2018 23:02

Also check out TK Maxx - we found some great kids winter coats there this week

Easynow · 13/09/2018 23:15

You may as well have a look at it OP. It is quite long, but ideal for torrential rain!

Did they not have bigger sizes for your older one?

They have other coats on there if you put Trespass in the search bar.

I think they do parkas for boys.

I’ve bought this coat for mine several times in all the sizes.

Justgivemesomepeace · 13/09/2018 23:22

I get mine from decathlon. Ds's last one was from the sailing section! Loads of different kinds, properly waterproof/windproof, great colours and the hoods stay up. Go outdoors is also great. They are about the same price as you pay in supermarkets/high street stores but much better as they are designed for outdoor activities rather than fashion.

AiryFairy1 · 13/09/2018 23:25

Trespass here too! I got dd’s new coat on sale for £14!

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 14/09/2018 00:13

Trespass - made in Glasgow originally .
I lived there for 3 years , trust me, they know about rain in Glasgow Wink
