Am I completely mad to be seriously considering a red trouser suit...?

OK, I have a few events coming up this autumn and winter. Two weddings (but non-traditional weddings, one is a same-sex marriage and the other a second marriage for both parties; both are close family and friends only at restaurant venues), a family 60th (West End show and dinner) and a non-Xmas smart work do (I am freelance and in a creative job).

Am I nuts to be thinking about rocking up to some or all of these events in this?

Obviously not styled with nothing underneath!!!

Thing is, I do like a dress but I'm very picky about them. Fit can be tricky with dresses as I'm broad shouldered and narrow-hipped so I'm either gaping or restricted. I love tunic-type dresses but I've not yet seen anything that makes me feel as WHEEEEE (technical term ) as this trouser suit.

I'm 42 and a size 10, about 5 foot 8.

My style (on days when I'm not looking a total mess) or rather my ideal style is minimal glam.

I suppose I'd try to find a dressy black top so I could wear the jacket off.

I guess, too, I'd style it with heels for the weddings at least. I have some lovely anthracite pointy heels.

I'd like to be able to wear it more low key with trainers too but I have no idea how you do that with trousers and get the leg length right... I'm a bit clueless. Seriously, if you have trousers to wear with heels can you also wear them with flats? Isn't the length just all wrong?!

But am I mad to be thinking this? The color is STUNNING on the rack, absolutely not burgundy but not bright bright red either, and I think it suits me though I'm not that familiar with wearing red.

Should the trousers be skinnier?

Is it all just WRONG, or at least wrong for the occasions I've listed above (in which case I wouldn't buy it anyway because there are no everyday situations where I can get away with wearing a red suit)?

I think you should go for it. I wish I was tall enough to wear that suit.

Thanks JohnLapsley! I used to hate being tall (not exactly towering but I used to always be taller than my friends) and I've enjoyed it more now I try to own it!

Try it on, if you like it and feel comfortable in it wear it. It's suitable for the events you mention and can also be worn as separates.

I personally would feel like the number ten bus, although I'm the same height and size as you, albeit 49 years old. However I've learned that I prefer darker colours, black, grey, navy, dark green, and wouldn't go out head to toe in red. However if you can pull it off without being self conscious, go for it. It is lovely.

Bluntness, I suppose that's the main thing stopping me is the sheer redness of it. I agree it could all be a bit Number 10 bus! I guess it's about colouring but also about not being self-conscious... may ask hubby as he has a pathological hatred of colour in clothes so if he thinks it's even remotely OK I now I'm onto a winner Grin

It looks beautiful - I had to look twice at the price, I thought it would be at least a 500 suit.

If you feel gorgeous in it, do it, it’s fabulous.

Thanks Iborgia, I am going to go back to the store tomorrow lunchtime and try it on again.

It really is gorgeous in the flesh, as it were, the material is beautiful and it does look more expensive than it is.

The question is whether it's actually good ON ME or not and I think it's something I can only decide with a bit more thought... it's going to be a hefty purchase for me if I do get it (though it does have the benefit of being able to be worn different ways too) so I don't want to rush into it.

Glad to hear the general view is it's suitable for the events.

Is it just me who doesn't know how you're meant to wear trousers with different height heels, though? Do people get trousers with the intention of only wearing them with a certain pair of shoes or a certain height heel? I've lived in ankle-grazers for ages and I don't know how to work trousers if they come past your ankle!!

That is a gorgeous suit and you should definitely buy it. You'll get loads of wear out of it as you can dress it up with heels and a cami top for weddings and events or down with a t shirt for work.

Unless you do turn ups I'm not sure how it works either to be honest, without either the hem trailing in the dirt or you looking like your trousers are too short for you.

It is lovely and I think the trousers would look great with a black or white top. The jacket could be worn with jeans.

All together it's a statement, I would imagine a lovely one, it's just that thing if you're not used to being head to toe in colour, then you might find you feel a bit like your standing out. If you are used to wearing colour then I don't think you'd give it a second thought.

I'm not sure there are many everyday occasions a red suit would work, but there are many every day occasions it would work as separates.

You have a model figure. Get the suit! Pretty sure you’ll look amazing.

The answer to suit trousers - two or even three pairs, all hemmed to different heights. Trousers get much more wear than jackets so it will increase the longevity of your suit. Plus trouser styles change slower than trouser lengths - sometimes all you need to look current is to wear trousers in this season’s length. This is where my fashion knowledge runs out; are ankle length still the look, young folk?

I hate the shoes they have matched with your suit in the link though, and I say that as a Massimo Dutti addict. It would look so much better with huge earrings and much more feminine shows or sandals.

Very lovely and an amazing price for 100% wool. I wouldn’t wait til tomorrow - now you’ve advertised it here they’ll all be gone.

Trouser hems are meant to puddle this year! You’ll look enviably now. Rush back to the shop.

This could look hot! I'd get a sexy black body suit underneath and fab shoes. Definitely red lips too

i love it and if i had the height for it, i would buy it myself. unfortunately, i'm only 4'9'' so no way would it sit right one me but you have the height and the slimness to carry it off. at the very least, order it and try it on, if it doesn't suit (ha!) at least you've scratched the itch!!!

Go for it and yes I'd say 2 trousers, you'll get the wear out of them compared to the jacket. One pair for heels, one pair for flats - it would look as incredible with converse and a white tee as with heels and a black cami/vest. Love it!

I read the title and was all set to say no way.
Definitely go for it - it's gorgeous. (Not so sure about a black top though.)

Like yakari says, you may need two pairs of trousers, like old fashioned gents' outfitters, so when one pair wears out, you've still got a good looking suit, with jacket and trousers that match.

Go full Trinny with some silver platform brogues. They'd look great with the red.
