I want a dramatic hair cut but no idea what to ask for with pic

Help!! I am trying to sort my appearance out after losing myself a bit as a shm for 3 years. I have booked in for a restyle next week but no idea what to ask for. Currently have hanging curtain hair.

On the plus side i've lost 5 stone in the last year so I actually have a face shape again

On the negative side the weight loss means i've lost a lot of hair and although it has now started to grow back it is very thin.

I have quite good cheekbones (i think) and it the past having a fringe wide to expose them looked good but dont know if i'm too jowly now or would emphasise the roundness of my face?

I want to be brave and really go for it so please inspire me

Ooh I like that very much!!

I really like the shape & the fact that its short without being cropped iyswim.
It looks like very thick hair though, i wonder if i've got enough hair for it to work??

I'm a hairdresser.

I love @MoltonSilver suggestion BUT it looks amazing because the woman is very young, has epic make-up, the hair is toned pink and it's styled to within an inch of its life. If you tried this hair like this there is a massive risk it'd just come out looking like a mum-bob. That's fine and very different from what you have now but isn't particularly exciting or dramatic.

Are you planning on a colour change?

VauxhallVectra · 12/09/2018 13:12

It's not just that the hair is thick but it's also very heavily styled for this photo. Your hair might look like that for about 10 minutes in the morning but by lunchtime it really really wouldn't.

VauxhallVectra · 12/09/2018 13:14

Personally I'm a fan of fringes and I think one would really suit you. They're a really easy way to make hair look styled, deliberate and put-together without massive styling every morning. Full fringe would suit you.

Frequency · 12/09/2018 13:16

Also a hairdresser and I agree with Vauxhall.

If you want a dramatic change, I'd go with a colour change. A deep red would good on you from what I can tell in the pics.

Like this colour

Keep it long and maybe learn how to curl or wave it with flat irons to dress it up.

VauxhallVectra · 12/09/2018 13:16

Do you like this? It's a bob but choppy with a funky fringe and you could style it as much or as little as you wanted to every day

PamsterWheel · 12/09/2018 13:17

Can you post pics vaux of what styles you think would work for OP?

VauxhallVectra · 12/09/2018 13:18

@Frequency Yep, my next suggestion was going to be waving Grin

I'd also suggest a colour change - easiest way to feel made-over and dramatic Grin

christmasinus · 12/09/2018 13:18

Thank you for the feedback! I reeeeaaaaly want to avoid a mum bob at all costs so I guess that one isnt a goer.

I should add I,m not great at styling it at home so need something that doesnt depend on my skills.

Pre baby i always went to vidal sassoon and had their very sharp type haircuts that i didnt really have to meddle with but my face was much slimmer to pull that off

As to colour i'm worried i wouldnt be able to keep it up long term financially....

I would lop about an inch off the ends, keep the shape and dye it.

I would go darker with some caramel pieces through it and then use an iron to wave it.

Also, a bit of lip gloss, some mascara and your eyebrows threaded with a good manicure can make you feel much more pulled together.

Congratulations on your weight loss and your skin looks amazing. You look very young!

VauxhallVectra · 12/09/2018 13:21

If you don't want to do much styling, I'd say you need a quite choppy cut which has texture in it naturally and looks styled even if you haven't styled it (you just need to rub a bit of putty/wax on the ends).

If you go with all one length, I'd say you're getting into quite mumsy styles which need quite a bit of styling to look "done".

Is your hair naturally curly/kinky at all? Would it hold waves/curls?

christmasinus · 12/09/2018 13:24

Vauxhall not keen on that bob.

V sassoon always did me a fringe as per your suggestions. They did longish quite heavy and wide fringes. Is my face too fat for that??

Thanks for all the help btw Smile

Cut a few inches off and get blonde highlights?

How did you lose weight? How long? (Well done, btw!)

VauxhallVectra · 12/09/2018 13:33

A full, wide fringe would look absolutely cracking on you. No, I don't think your face is too fat at all. You look great and congrats on your weight loss by the way Grin

If I were you, I'd book in for a consultation at the hairdressers first and get their opinion on things. If you've been with the same haidresser for a while it might be worth exploring someone new/young/funky because your old hairdresser might be stuck in their ways with you.
Book in for a 20 minute consultation, take a stack of pictures of styles you like (don't all have to be similar at all - just a broad idea is good) and have a chat with them about your ideas and concerns.

Timeisslippingaway · 12/09/2018 13:37

Could you it home dye and just have a cut at a salon? I home dye my hair ginger and used to go to a hairdresser for a cut but now my sil does it for free 😊. Its nothing dramatic right enough.

christmasinus · 12/09/2018 13:54

I've made a restyle appointment rather than just a cut and finish appointment with the senior style director. it is about 15 mins longer than a normal appointment, I just didn't want to go with no ideas at all.

I'm embarrassed to say i don't have a regular hairdresser, for three years now I've just run into supercuts and had the ends hacked off about once every six months whilst my mum hovered with ds.

This appointment next week is £££ for me but I never spend any money on myself. No idea if they are a young trendy or not (although, frankly, everyone is trendier than me Grin)

Got to go to the hell that is tiny rhyme time now, will post some fringe pics tonight.

Thanks for weightloss congrats btw. I've been having treatment for post traumatic stress triggered binge eating disorder which is about as fun as it sounds. so no good eating plan to share or anything, just less occasions where i shove half a loaf of bread in my face in 8 seconds to jam my feelings down, so i am just naturally losing weight by not doing that iyswim.

OP, it'll be worth the £££. If they give you a really good style that you love, it's easy to maintain then (and cheaper!).

My advice would be to be completely honest about quite how dramatic you want to go. When I have new clients in who say they want "something drastic" or "something dramatic" I'll tend to err on the side of caution because my version of dramatic (which might be half your head buzz cut, the other half bleached and tones teal and a choppy purple fringe) might not match theirs (which might be just a bob and a few highlights).

So if you really do want a dramatic and drastic change, I would say to tell them this very explicitly and say "don't be cautious, just go for it" otherwise you might end up with something not as dramatic and different as you'd hoped.

Hope that makes sense... can't wait to see pictures of it Grin

PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 12/09/2018 15:57

This in a dark , warm brown . Easy to dye yourself at home and easy to style if cut well.

I want a dramatic hair cut but no idea what to ask for with pic
PaulHollywoodsleftbollockhair · 12/09/2018 16:00

No to the fringe and dinner lady burgundy hair colour.

Frosted chocolate or chestnut would suit you I think.

VauxhallVectra · 12/09/2018 16:06

I disagree @PaulHollywood that's not easy to style at all. To get that shiny, sleek looks needs tonnes of straightening (even on straight hair), which will make the hair greasy which will mean it needs to be washed every day which isn't ideal.

The hair looks beautiful but there isn't a hair out of place on that model's head. Look at the hair around her jawline. You'd have no hope of achieving and keeping that look at home.

furandchandeliers · 12/09/2018 16:11

I would go for a big change with the colour but style wise I'd steer clear of anything too short else it will look mumsy.

Frequency · 12/09/2018 16:17

It's basically the same cut posted earlier @PaulHollywood.

My mum used to have the same cut. It looked amazing when I styled it for her but not so much when she styled it herself. I actually refused to cut it again like that for her because she never spent the time styling and it looked cringeworthy bad. Seriously, badly, bad.

Without straightening she looked like Worzel Gummidge. It wasn't much better when she did straighten it as she only straightened it. She didn't make any attempt to shape or style it.

Those cuts look great on someone willing to spend 30 mins a day (minimum) shaping and styling it properly. On us normal folk they look like badly cut bobs.
