Wearing flat shoes with skirts

Just that, really. What sort of non-heeled shoes are ok to wear with skirts and dresses? I can't wear heels but I never feel like I get it quite right when I'm trying to team flats with skirts. I have my mid-calf boots but what other options would people recommend?

I have knee high boots, ballet pumps and brogues. Trainers at the weekend. Personally I think flats look better with an above the knee hemline, a midi skirt with flats can be tricky to pull off and I always end up looking frumpy if I try!

Seniorschoolmum · 10/09/2018 20:22

I like brogues with skater skirts and thick tights.

GraceMarks · 10/09/2018 20:23

Yes, I see what you mean. I don't really have the legs for short hemlines, though. Generally I stick to trousers but I do sometimes fancy a change!

I wear ballet pumps or flip flops in the summer and have a pair of flat (miniscule heeled) knee high boots in the winter. I also like Doc Martens with dresses. Kind of grungy look.

Like OP have said, definitely think you need to be wearing a knee high or shorter skirt with flats. I hate anything longer than knee length anyway because I'm so short.

GraceMarks · 10/09/2018 20:33

Hm. I have really ugly knees and fat legs, and I have no desire to get them out, even with thick tights. Think I'll stick with trousers then!

Disagree that skirt needs to be short. Love a midi or full length skirt with brogues, trainers, chelsea boots

CountFosco · 10/09/2018 20:47

I only wear flat shoes. I wear brogues or loafers or pointy flats or sandals or ankle boots or trainers. I disagree that you can only wear short shirts with flats, I wear maxi skirts the whole time with ankle boots or trainers or sandals. Midi length is a bit harder depending on the look you are going for but a pointy flat with a low vamp fufills the same role as a heel if you're going for a traditional smart look. Read everyone's favourite flat shoe wearer Enbrogue.

Racecardriver · 10/09/2018 20:48

I often wear brogues or similar with skirts. Leather sneakers are also big this season.

GraceMarks · 10/09/2018 21:03

CountFosco excuse my style ignorance but what's a vamp??

Mary-Jane style Doc Martens work for me

AsleepAllDay · 10/09/2018 21:08

Also another person who only wears flat shoes and they can look cute!

theunsure · 10/09/2018 21:13

Ankle boots are the way forward.
I live in short dresses, opaque tights and pixie ankle boots. Small heeled or flat for work. Much more comfy than pumps (they kill my feet).

Vamp explanation. I don’t subscribe to it as shoes that start too low make my feet look fat and often squish my toes.

GraceMarks · 10/09/2018 21:17

Oh, also - thanks for the link to En Brogue. She's a bit braver than me wrt her clothing but there's some great ideas there.

I bought loafers for the first time last week. I couldn't face another term of uncomfortable shoes. I wasn't convinced in the shop, but they are SO comfortable! Grey loafers and I've been wearing knee length dresses and 7/8 cropped trousers with them. I know the dresses are not v stylish with the shoes, but I don't think they are too bad. And to not want to take my shoes off behind my desk and walk around the lab bare foot is frankly worth it!

SymbollocksInteractionism · 14/09/2018 10:46

I wear skirts a fair bit and usually wear converse boots or other ankle boots.

nickEcave · 14/09/2018 12:36

I only wear flat shoes or boots and I'm really short. The only clothing item I think really doesn't work well with flat shoes is a pencil skirt.

BambooWhoosh · 14/09/2018 12:57

@user1471530109 Which grey loafers do you have please? I'm always searching for comfy shoes.

pumpkinyael · 14/09/2018 12:58

Im not a fan of (most kinds of) ballet flats with skirts. They make my legs look stumpy and my feet fat ;)

But I do like knee-length boots :) Brogues and loafers are also nice imo...
I'm pretty short, ankle boots therefore don't work for me.

Musicforsnorks · 14/09/2018 13:04

For me:

Leather ballet flats, suede point flats, dr martens lace-up shoes, patent low heel loafers.
Sometimes, if a mini skirt I wear Chelsea boots, doc boots or even my black Nike’s.

For mini,s I stay with flats, sleek or chunky.
Knee skirts I will still use flats but can go to a small heel.
For maxi and calf length skirts I will wear wedge heel espadrilles, mid heel ankle boots, higher heels in general.

This also applies to dresses and length.
Tend not to wear maxi in winter.
