Leather leggings - still in fashion?

And for how much longer?

OP posts:

I have some from J.Crew which are gorgeous. They are pricey, around £500. No sweaty crotch, beautiful with black patent heels and a cashmere jumper on a Sat night.

Elledorado · 09/09/2018 13:09

I love the look of then but the cleaning thing always gets me. Do you have to dryclean after every couple of wears?

JessieMcJessie · 09/09/2018 13:09

Are any of you leather leggings-wearers on this thread larger than a size 12 and shorter than 5’7”? At size 14/16 and 5’4” I do wear skinny jeans but leather/pleather trousers just never crossed my mind as a possibility...

InertPotato · 09/09/2018 13:19

I haven't washed mine yet, and I've probably worn them about 30 times. They still smell new/like leather.

These are mine:

Jessie, I recently went from a 10/12 to an 8 and kept the same pair -they were my fashion safe harbour pre-weight loss. I'm 5'8". I think they're pretty forgiving, provided they're worn with a covering top.

itwillbealrightpromise · 09/09/2018 13:20

@JessieMcJessie yes! I'm a 5'3" large-of-arse size 12 and I wear them. They are a bit of a squeeze in a 12, but I've sized up to a 14 before which fit fine around the hips but are stupidly baggy everywhere else, like a leatherette Nora Batty.

InertPotato · 09/09/2018 13:23

I originally ordered mine in navy but ultimately opted for black, I just couldn't wrap my head around navy leather.

userofthiswebsite · 09/09/2018 13:44

I bought a pair from Topshop Boutique about 2 years ago reduced from £250 to £125.
The reason I've never worn them is just that I don't know what to do after I've worn them. Do I accept that every time I wear them I've got to make a trip to the dry cleaner or cross my fingers and see if they will make it through a wash...

Senac32 · 09/09/2018 14:00

I'm amazed! How on earth do you get them on? I have enough trouble putting on normal tights or leggings.
And can you actually wash leather? Otherwise surely you get the smelly crotch syndrome.
I always cut out a diamond shaped crotch in tights and leggings.

FabulousTomatoes · 09/09/2018 14:15

At the end of the season earlier this year I washed both pairs in the washing machine and then tumble dried them! They were fine, drying them at high heat is meant to restore their shape again, and I’m pleased to say it worked.

Google the advice on washing and drying them first though. I washed mine on a quick fifteen minute cycle.

TheHoundsofLove · 09/09/2018 14:18

I'm planning to get mine dry cleaned when I feel they need it, but I only ever wash trousers if they are visibly dirty anyway. They don't smell at all.

JessieMcJessie · 09/09/2018 15:16

“I always cut out a diamond-shaped crotch in tights and leggings”- what now?? Tell us more!

Bluntness100 · 09/09/2018 15:18

Yup, I'm a bit curious about that too, 🤣

Emmageddon · 09/09/2018 15:34

Ew. Only washing trousers when they are visibly dirty?

MelanieLampshade · 09/09/2018 15:55

The woman who runs Mercer 7 is dead keen on leather leggings - www.mercer7.com/product/leather-leggings/

TheHoundsofLove · 09/09/2018 16:12

Emmagedon If they're everyday trousers that can be easily machine washed, I will freshen them up more often (although certainly not every time I wear them), but for any that need dry cleaning I will wait (suit trousers or going out trousers that I might have only worn for a few hours). They definitely don't smell - if they did, I would wash them.

DameDoom · 09/09/2018 16:51

Mine will be out shortly. Trainers and chunky knits all the way. They are dead easy to wear and I couldn't give any fucks if they are in or not. I have more than got my moneysworth and will continue to wear until they fall apart or I get fed up.
I wear a panty-liner and two pairs of knickers to keep them clean I sound lovely. They aren't sweaty as they are lined.

DameDoom · 09/09/2018 16:54

Just don't style them like Jane McDonald, Colleen Nolan or Denise Welch - they give leather anything a bad name ... ditto Ruth Langsford.

Bluntness100 · 09/09/2018 17:02

Dame, you made me laugh there, but yes 🤣

ForalltheSaints · 09/09/2018 17:09

Leggings may be fashionable but they are awful. I would not ban them as we live in a relatively free society, but put a large tax on them to discourage them.

Bluntness100 · 09/09/2018 18:05

The leather ones or leather look ones are very different though, they are thicker and more structured, More like skinny jeans.

And some folks can look great in leggings. My 21 year old daughter wears them, always thick good quality ones, with a long line oversized shirt or jumper and Chelsea boots. But she is 5 foot 8/9 and a size 8 to ten,

She, I can say with certainty, and no bias, doesn't look remotely awful ...

Charlotte48 · 09/09/2018 18:42

I am a keen follower of fashion and leather leggings are definitely back in this year. I have a very expensive pair form Selfridges which I am hopping to wear in the autumn/winter - I think they look flattering and sophisticated.

EdWinchester · 09/09/2018 18:50

Just don't style them like Jane McDonald, Colleen Nolan or Denise Welch

I saw Coleen Nolan in some the other day on This Morning. It was bad. Very bad.

Wolf1826 · 09/09/2018 18:58

I love mine, I have navy, burgundy and black. I wear them with suede boots rather than leather as, like a PP, I don't like 'double leather'.

I dress them down and am looking for some new tops for this season. Can anyone suggest some? Need to not be too thick thought I love a chunky knit (am menopausal!), long (am 5'9") and preferably fitted at the bottom or I just look straight up and down (size 8/10).

Inmyvestandpants · 09/09/2018 20:22

I have just ordered a pair of navy leather-look leggings from Sosander (black's not my colour and Theresa May put me off brown leather trousers of any design). I've got some green Fly London biker boots with buckles to wear with them, and a tailored linen shirt over the top. I am going to feel a-ma-zing.

I am past caring whether things are fashionable - if you always wear what's "in" you just end up looking like everyone else. If it brings me joy, I wear it and you should do the same.

Bluntness100 · 09/09/2018 20:57

I also don't care if something is fashionable as such. I mean don't get me wrong, I'd feel weird in boot cut jeans, but I wouldn't wear something specifically because it was fashionable.

If it looks good and feels right, then wear it.

With leather leggings, I like rib knit jumpers, Hobbs do some great ones, they look chunky but feel thin and are flattering, or a polo neck, some nice chunky heeled suede ankle boots. Something like a grey slouchy cashmere knit can also look good. Depends on how long you want it.

I think you need to pretty much keep it elegant, or go super casual, trainers, biker boots, kind of thing, to avoid the whole "I'm well kinky me"vibe. 🤣
