Eyeliner for a total beginner

The only time I've worn eyeliner was back in my grunge days when I used kohl on my inner lower lid (eyes are watering just thinking about it).

Do you think eyeliner is required to finish off eye makeup?
I'd love to use it for nights out but have no idea what to buy. I use brown black mascara as black makes me look washed out.. would black eyeliner do the same?

Also, pencil, pen or brush? And how to do it so I don't look like I've painted on a flick with a Sharpie?

If black mascara makes you look washed out I wouldn't use black eyeliner.

It depends what kind of eyeliner look you want really. I use black or other dark coloured eyeshadows most of the time as my eyeliner. It gives a softer finish. I apply it with a very thin brush.

If you want a sharper look then you will need a pen/liquid or perhaps gel.
