Has anyone got any experience of these Ash high top trainers?

I've had half an eye on them for a couple of years now and have found myself drawn back to them again. I love the fact that they look quite edgy and would go with loads and that they're a nice crossover between leather boots and trainers - but are they worth the money, will be be comfy and are they really as 'cool' as I think they are? I love in canvas converse so these have potential to be a great winter alternative but for some reason I just can't decide - probably the price tag! Opinions gratefully received before to help me decide whether or not to finally splash out!

Live not love obviously - although I do love my converse!

I got them a few years ago, love them and still wear them, I have the wedge canvas ones too

MotheringShites · 28/08/2018 15:05

I live in these in the colder months. They are so comfortable. I really thought they were non-frumpy but then read a thread on here about how the youngsters wouldn’t be seen dead in them! I don’t care a bit as I’m old.

SingingGoldfinch · 28/08/2018 15:07

I saw that thread mothering and it did make me think. I honestly don't think they're frumpy - maybe not what your Nike wearing youngsters would chose but a different kind of cool perhaps?

Ive had three pairs of Ash hi-tops and each and every pair has split away at the sole. Not worth the money IMO.

SingingGoldfinch · 28/08/2018 15:15

Hmmmm - how long did you have them before they split op?

OP posts:
FabulousTomatoes · 28/08/2018 15:34

About a year, if not less Sad

Ellapaella · 28/08/2018 15:44

I've had a pair for a year, no problems with them but I don't wear them everyday.
They are comfy and good for wide feet, they are very roomy.
I actually got mine from Daniel Footwear in the sale for £69 but if you buy them from Hush at the moment you can get a 10% discount with the code A18PREVIEW

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/08/2018 15:54

I had a pair of these years ago (must be at least 6+ years I think). I was very happy with them at the time - I particularly liked the zip fastening rather than having to buckle them up. They were comfy. But I sold them on (had a clear-out at least 3-4 years ago). I didn't realise shops were still selling them. They're definitely not edgy. Well past their prime. But if you don't care about trends/fashion etc, they're perfectly serviceable.

SingingGoldfinch · 28/08/2018 16:00

That's just it op - I do care about fashion - but I'm early 40s living in a country town so what's 'edgy' to me is definitely not the same as what's edgy to a 20-something!! Believe me - compared to what a lot of people round here wear these are relatively 'cool' - think mountain warehouse or Next!! Wink

MrsMariaPolouvicka · 28/08/2018 16:04

I've just looked back in my photos and I had a pair 8 years ago. They are definitely not edgy or cool in a fashion sense. Leather converse or Vans (some styles are scotchguarded) would be a more current cold/wet weather alternative. They are also very expensive for what they are, the soles are very thin and no more comfortable than converse.

I understand the need to scratch an itch though, so I'd wait for a decent discount code or a sale. Very Exclusive sell them and they fairly frequently do 20-30% codes and put them in sale. Or even eBay.

SingingGoldfinch · 28/08/2018 16:13

I'm obviously in a bit of a fashion backwater as I've never seen anyone wearing them!! I've just been looking at alternatives and Vans have some good options - but Vans just remind me of my student days!

OP posts:
Ellapaella · 28/08/2018 17:03

@SingingGoldfinch I look at vans and think of teenagers - every single teenager I see is wearing a pair. Not that I wouldn't wear them but I wouldn't call Vans 'edgy' either.
Ash High Tops have been around for ages - like you I have never seen anyone else in a pair other than once when I was shopping in London. If you like them don't worry too much about what the current trend is.
After all Vans and Converse are very definitely not current - they've been popular since I was a teenager 25 years ago! I had a pair of both of them then.

MM18 · 28/08/2018 17:19

These are a classic I think. I love mine and the zip is so much less fiddly than laces. The footbed is wider than Converse and the sole more comfortable. Go for it!

HundredMilesAnHour · 28/08/2018 18:16

What size shoe do you wear OP?

There are a few (relative) bargains to be had in the current sale at Tracey Neuls:

I lived in these last winter (and liked them so much that I bought a second pair that I have been hoarding ready for this winter). Got lots of compliments on them from some pretty cool people, including our Hackney based digital design guys.

SingingGoldfinch · 28/08/2018 18:28

Thanks Hundred but it's leather high tops I particularly fancy. To be honest I'm really not bothered about what cool digital types in Hackney think - I'm more worried about looking a bit stylish in an age appropriate way!

OP posts:
HundredMilesAnHour · 28/08/2018 19:14

I think maybe it's exactly as you say in a previous post - you have a different idea of what is edgy where you live.

I'm not sure why you have a thing about age appropriate though. I assume that's connected to where you live and everyone thinks you start shopping at Clarks as soon as you turn 30?

(I'm 48 by the way - and have never even given a thought to my age when buying shoes, and I don't intend to start now)

GraceMarks · 28/08/2018 19:54

I had a pair about 15 years ago (I only got them because they were heavily reduced at a designer boutique that was closing down) and I loved them. They were so comfortable yet they looked stylish with practically everything. I think I had them for a couple of years before they got too tatty to wear. Would definitely get some again if I had the money to spend.

I can't believe they're thought of as frumpy though! I mean, perhaps they're not what teenagers would wear, but they're definitely not bronze-coloured sandals with punched-leather patterns!

MabelBee · 28/08/2018 19:57

I've had two pairs of these in the past, both of which didn't even make it through the winter without splitting. Very short shelf life!

Blankscreen · 28/08/2018 21:03

I had a pair and like other people the split round the sole. I really looked after mine too soninwas very pissed off.

They also wore really badly at the back.

I was actually looking at pair earlier and I think they have changed the sole and I wonder if that is because this has been an issue.

Look.at Crime London they do some lovely high top slightly more but I would say more fashionable.

emma6776 · 28/08/2018 21:35

I loved them about 6 years ago but ebayed mine when all the mums at school started wearing them. Super comfy though!

Pebblesandblamblam · 28/08/2018 21:41

I had a pair a few years ago, liked the look but they are not comfortable at all! Not worth the money!

Ellapaella · 28/08/2018 21:55

Mine are super comfy!
I've only ever seen one other person in a pair (in London ages ago) where does everyone live who sees them all the time just out of interest? I live in a big city but honestly have not seen one person in them.

SingingGoldfinch · 28/08/2018 22:16

Agree Ella - I've only ever seen one person wearing them and that was a women working in a trendy shop in Brighton. She looked so good in them - definitely not in the slightest bit frumpy or last season (it was earlier this year!)

OP posts:
BrassicaBabe · 28/08/2018 22:27

I've had 3 pairs. Currently searching for my 4th. I guess they don't last as long as the money spent would suggest. I guess I get 2 winters out of a pair and do tend to wear them to death! I'm 45 if that swings things one way or the other Grin
