Chinos for bulky calfs

I have swum and cycled pretty much all my life and have very pronounced calf muscles, which makes buying trousers very difficult! The fashion for skinnies has not helped. I can usually find straight leg jeans to fit - although they fit like skinnies (currently really like Boden Trafalgar jeans). Unfortunately, I can’t wear jeans to work, but it would be really helpful to wear chinos - I am office based but could be called out to visit a building site/inspect some flood defences/visit a farm - and I felt chinos would really work. I can’t find any that fit my lower legs though - I have tried Gap, Next and M&S.

I’m 5’9”, size 14, but my calf muscles are really lean. No matter what size I am, trousers get stuck there.

Anyone know of any less tapered chinos/khakis?

Have you had a look at Uniqlo? I’m chunky if calf too and hate it when trousers stick there. Uniqlo have a new range of trousers out in a myriad of patterns and colours.

Deux · 27/08/2018 14:22

Another brand I got a really good fit with is Finery.

BikeRunSki · 27/08/2018 14:27

I’ll check those out, thank you. I ha e some smart wool trousers from Uniqlo, but nothing else. I’ve also tried Finery trousers in the past, but they have always been too short.

I have very chunky calves too. I have chinos from Oasis that aren’t tight around my calves, and fall back to the correct spot when I stand up. My pair are quite casual and summery, not sure if they do a smarter pair.

bingohandjob · 27/08/2018 16:17

ASOS own brand are good for this.

blodynmawr · 27/08/2018 16:51

Have you tried the Boden Richmond trousers, either Bootcut or Straight leg? They are a thick cotton fabric with stretch. Fit the brief of being smart for the office and also practical for site! HTH Smile

BikeRunSki · 27/08/2018 17:43

I have blodynmawr. Possibly the most unflattering garment ever to grace my body. Far too clingy, in all the wrong places.

I have two pairs of chinos from M&S, pure cotton, and they skim my rather sturdy calves perfectly. Loads of colours available, about £22 I think and a decent length.

I'm 5ft11 and a 12 top/14 hips/thighs, with 'athletic' calves and tho I love 3/4 tapered trousers for work, I dont find many that I don't have to do the 'shuffle 'em back down' dance when I stand up; however, Next Tall have some great options.

blodynmawr · 27/08/2018 17:56

Lands End?
Lands End Wide Leg? albeit the colour choices are a bit random...

These from Jaeger?]] Not chinos but are stretchy and likely to be good quality thick material….

BikeRunSki · 27/08/2018 18:10

Thanks all

  • Almond - I have tried many Chinos in M&S over the years, and they have all been too narrow. Will check them out again though.

I actually have some LE chinos, but they fit very badly elsewhere. One size firs perfectly but is slightly too tight round the waist, the next size up is huge all over, and looks ridiculous with a belt . Sorry blodynmawr, I hate ponte, far too hot and clingy.

I am wondering if trousers from a plus size place would work? Curvissa start at a 14. Not that I particulalry want to be buying plus size! Its hard enough staying at a 14.

I too am chunky of leg and recently bought some chinos from RJR in Debenhams- they are the most comfortable trousers I’ve worn in years.

LadyLapsang · 27/08/2018 19:33

Hi, I am 5 10, size 12-14 and have large calves. I have chinos from L K Bennett, Massimo Dutti ( but you need to try them on, some I can barely get over my ankle), B oden Richmond ( but too big on waist) although the Boden green flowered ones from this summer are cut well for me.

LadyLapsang · 27/08/2018 19:42

The green flowered Boden are called Mallory and they have a 14 L in clearance. They come up smaller than Richmond and do not have as much give. They are a small 14. More a summer trouser and the style is not for everyone.

Almondio · 27/08/2018 22:22

BikeRunSki the ones I've found great are the pure cotton turn up chinos, £19.50 - currently on website, don't know how to link. I got the navy and stone ones last year.

BikeRunSki · 29/08/2018 23:24

The results are in -
M&S - nothing went over my calfs, including those Almondio recommended
Debenhams - no RJR chinos
Uniqlo - nothing full length, all silly ankle length
Curvissa - straight leg style clung to me like limited, very tiny sizing, very rubbish fabric.

I might try Boden Richmond again, but I found them far too clingy last time. Green flowery trousers are not for me!

Havn’t managed to get to an Oasis.

My elephantine lower legs measure 43cm girth at their widest point, and are ironically the leanest part of me.

OP posts:
LadyLapsang · 30/08/2018 07:27

Bike, one of my mine is 43cm, so I feel your pain. My recent purchase from L K Bennett is the most roomy around the lower leg but will only suit if your waist is in proportion. To compare, the Boden Richmond hang off me round the waist - why Johnnie doesn't add belt loops is beyond me.

Peanutbuttercups21 · 30/08/2018 07:35

Boden cuts its clothes for straight up and down people only with no curves (or calves)

Mbear · 30/08/2018 07:46

I’ve got calves a similar size and I’ve just bought chinos from jigsaw, very comfy and no calf issues at all.

BikeRunSki · 30/08/2018 07:55

Thank Lapsang. I have never shopped st LKB. They must have a shop in Yorkshire! Not entirely convinced that I want to wear anything from there on s builfibg site though!!

Thank you MBear I hadn’t thought of Jigsaw.

I know Peanutbuttercups21, I am curved but their Trafalgar straightleg jeans fit me perfectly!

Today I am wearing a pair of navy chinks I got from Howies (culty Welsh outdoorsy brand), which fit brilliantly but unfortunately they have never been treated! Fortunately they are very good quality and have msbt years left in them, but do not miraculously stay clean!

Also large of calf, and would agree with you that straight leg jeans fit like skinnies. Would you be able to get away with garment dyed jeans instead of chinos? I've got some v nice straight leg ones from Fatface (although they appear to be out of stock at the moment, I'm sure they'll be back).

BikeRunSki · 05/09/2018 13:54

Found some! Asda! Pale blue grey and khaki beige. £12.50!!!! Had to go up a size, but not too bad at all.

evilharpy · 05/09/2018 14:02

I have exactly the same problem. Mine are 46cm. Bastards. I'm a size 14 but can get away with a 12 on top so my legs are completely out of proportion.

I have a lovely pair of chinos from East that I've had for years and when they're worn out I have no idea what I'll replace them with.

Monsoon have been ok for me in the past.
