Hoping for suggestions. Her birthday is soon and I would like to get it as a present, with the option of returning/exchanging if I get it wrong. TIA

I think I'd let her choose, unless you really know what she likes.
Having the right bag is important at that age I believe!

MarmaladeIsMyJam · 24/08/2018 12:16

Not a backpack!

actualpuffins · 24/08/2018 12:18

I'd let her choose. Paperchase, Accessorise and WHSmiths do some good ones.

DD1 insists on using some large shopper handbag affair so she may not even want a backpack.

EarlyIntheMorning · 24/08/2018 12:51

I know what you mean, that's why I want something returnable, but imagine the brownie points I'd get if I manage to get her the right bag!!!

My DD is starting in a few weeks too. What about a (handmade) voucher for a new bag since she might like to see what all the others carry first. I agree with PPs that she should probably choose it herself.

weechops · 24/08/2018 12:59

A lot of the girls who started high school this year along with my daughter have Hype backpacks. Loads to choose from

Billben · 24/08/2018 13:00

My daughter is starting secondary in a few days and she got a Hype backpack. So did her friends.

DN4GeekinDerby · 24/08/2018 13:11

I read I think on here a recommendation to check what the school recommends as different secondaries have different requirements for bags. Some schools require them to be squished into lockers while others need to be sturdy and comfortable enough to carry stuff all day.

www.bluebanana.com/en/product/1026048/0/hype-holographic-silver-backpack?currency=1&gclid=Cj0KCQjw2f7bBRDVARIsAAwYBBsGMN8eG59OtcTBjWXgqbwMeL9t8T5DouNhOU57g37Wi02dCDIgom4aAsW-EALw_wcB

We got this one, silver Hype back pack. Her new school requested specifically bright, easy to recognise bags and NOT hand bags. This is what she chose.

SoupDragon · 24/08/2018 13:16

DD has a Superdry one but I agree that Hype seem popular too.

QueenofLouisiana · 24/08/2018 13:20

Vans, Hype and Superdry all popular around here. Mainly pink and purple in yr7.

April241 · 24/08/2018 13:25

I have a few backpacks, much prefer them to over the shoulder/cross body bags now.

Depending on how much you want you spend, I have a Mi-Pac which has a padded section for laptops/iPads etc, a rose gold Mia Tui one, a Nica one and a Sophia and Matt backpack. All really great, roomy, comfortable and look good.

Actually I notice a lot more people using backpacks in every day life now, love mine!

NearWildHeaven · 24/08/2018 13:26

I'd say hype and superdry too.

MissWimpyDimple · 24/08/2018 13:27

Fjallraven Kanken or Hype here.

Kanken are pricey but seem to be the coveted brand

Cheekyblinders · 24/08/2018 13:34

My DD is a bit older and is sporty so always goes with an obscure sport specific brand of backpack but she was saying only a couple of days ago that a lot of the years 7s and 8s at her school have Hype backpacks... v on trend for the younger teen apparently!

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 24/08/2018 14:06

Most teenagers I know have got a hype or superdry one.

ImperfectTents · 24/08/2018 14:14

Bloody kanken. 75 quid for what appears to be flimsy nylon and probably not big enough

SeaGlassHunter · 25/08/2018 07:26

My DD is going into Y8 and spent hours yesterday deciding on the perfect backpack from the Vans website. That seems to be the "in" brand amongst her friends.

MrsPnut · 25/08/2018 07:30

My DD is 12 and I've just bought a Fjallraven bag. She had 2 hype bags last year (the first one the zip broke).

The Fjallraven bag fits loads in, she's just packed it to go away for the week and it seems very sturdy.

penguinsnpandas · 25/08/2018 13:23

DD has a Puma one she's in love with but also has some Superdry stuff. I wouldn't chose for my DD at this age as she would make a point of getting something different. DD currently gets my old clothes, says that's horrible, tries it on then says I'm having that and loads of my clothes disappear despite my apparent very bad taste. Hmm

abitoflight · 25/08/2018 13:25

Fjallraven
Light, tough, spacious

MountDiogenes · 25/08/2018 13:55

Have seen Nike, superdry, hype, adidas, vans, ellesse and fjallraven at dd's comp. Nike most popular i think. Dd2 got an Adidas backpack from JDs and dd1 going into year 10 has a hype backpack.

trackerc · 25/08/2018 13:58

My DD is starting year 7 & wants a River island backpack. That seems to be the kind of brand her friends are into. She didn't like any of the Hype ones.

Parker231 · 25/08/2018 13:58

DOnt spend a lot on it (unless DC is contributing) as they will go off it quickly and want a different one next school year.

pachiano1 · 25/08/2018 14:00
  1. Let your DC choose their own school bag.
  2. Don't give them it as a birthday present. It's a school bag.
