What to wear to work black tie do?

I have to go to an industry black tie do - not my work place, but people I do business with IYSWIM.

I loved black tie in university but don't think rocking out the vintage is really what's needed these days.

So tell me, what do people wear these days, and where could I shop that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg?

Thanks!

What's your usual style?

Age/size/shape/best feature/worst feature

w4ytoomuch · 23/08/2018 20:51

Oh. And budget.

Rainatnight · 23/08/2018 20:53

My usual style is the less directional end of Cos. So a little bit different but definitely not crazily so. I wear a lot of black.

I'm very short, early 40s, slim-ish, boobs are probably best feature but I won't be getting them out at this event! Grin I don't love my legs, but they're basically fine.

Budget up to about £200

Are you going with a partner, what are they wearing.

Rainatnight · 23/08/2018 20:56

No, DP isn't invited (as in, it's just not a partner do)

I'd go for something like this... elegant, timeless. £138

And, to be clear, I don't expect anyone to research actual outfits for me (though that's very welcome of course!). Just looking to get an idea of the kind of thing that's appropriate these days.

Ooh and 30% off with that code!

Rainatnight · 23/08/2018 21:07

That is gorgeous w4y but I'm afraid I'm probably a bit short to carry it off

Hmm.. so would a midi dress be best?

Rainatnight · 23/08/2018 21:12

I think midi, or just below the knee, dressed up with shoes and jewellery

You are fine in a cocktail dress these days, it doesn't have to be full length. But I would use and evening bag and heels if you are okay in them.

I have been to black tie do's in just an highstreet dress but I'm going to a black tie too and wanting something a bit different. Also it doesn't have to be a dress, could be a skirt/top combo.
