New York and Boston next week- what to wear?

Hi!

I'm travelling to the states on Sunday and need to pack my case for 3 nights in Boston followed by 4 nights in New York. What shall I pack?

I have read multiple threads about this but they all seem to be winter based. I have taken heed about shoes, and I have Clarks Corsio Calm sandals already broken in, and I've bought some skechers go walk 4 in Navy with the white sole.

I'm struggling with whether to take nicer dresses that I feel nice in, but might not be the best for walking all day, or shorts and vests that are comfy but I don't feel particularly trendy in.

Hopefully we'll manage a night out- what do you wear to go out drinking in New York? Dress? Jeans and a nice top? Flats or heels?

Help me please!

We are going to NYC this week. I've packed short jeans /top, 3 day dresses (one maxi), a smart dress and some culottes and a top. A few scarves and jewellery to dress up/down.

I've packed some open toe tan wedges and my trusty toms.

I've found this explorer pass on groupon which I am researching but looks good value:

@winterisstillcoming we have used the Go LA card earlier this year, and found it saved us money BUT only if you plan and could fit it in. Realistically, these things are miles apart so you can only really get to one a day max, and we just wanted to walk and explore too, or go to stuff not included, so the 3 attraction pass was fine for a 10 day trip. But if you do want to forget stuff on them you can save a fair whack!

@SeaToSki thanks for that reminder, I double checked the one on Amazon and luckily it has a switch for each voltage.

@wegotthis thanks for the idea of a comedy club, we're staying at the Marcel at Gramercy, and it looks to be a couple of blocks from the New York Comedy Club, so we'll take a look there 😊

I can see a couple of people have mentioned they're going for birthdays, try emailing your hotel to let them know- it was my partner's birthday earlier this month, hence the trip. I've emailed my hotel to confirm my reservation, added in that we are celebrating his birthday, and they've offered to put him a card and a bottle of bubbly in the room as a gift from them. Very thoughtful of them!

@wegotthis we're staying near Gramercy Park, it sounds like downtown, possibly midtown will be more of our area. Any favourite places you love?

I picked up a couple of skirts yesterday to go with me- a midi/maxi black polka dot wrap skirt from Matalan, and an above the knee little black lineny skirt with orange flowers from Asda. Both of them were good value and lightweight, so I'm hoping they're a good buy for next week (and beyond). They're both casual enough but still smarter than shorts anyway!

Yes! I have a word document that I send to all my friends with the places in that area I love - we.tl/t-bqUoAvgI2s. Hope you have a really amazing time.

If you havent booked any free tours by foot book a couple now they are a must. Try and book at least one. The Harlem tour is brilliant but if you dont get time to go up there one of the food tours will fill you up so you can go straight out for a drink in the evening freetoursbyfoot.com/greenwich-village-tours/ i liked Boston as well but found it very expensive. Try and have breakfast here one morning its amazing www.timeout.com/boston/restaurants/south-street-diner

You can always run into Old Navy i love their basics for layering. I wore think cullottes and tube type skirts. People wear tea dresses woth trainers there. Its very cadual really.

If you want to splash out in nyc we loved Tao. Have fun!

winterisstillcoming · 21/08/2018 18:31

Thanks OP, we are going for 10 days so are looking at a 3 or 5 ticket pass x

Your wardrobe sounds fabulous.

KnobJockey · 22/08/2018 17:52

Thanks again @wegotthis I've printed that out and we'll see what we can fit in!

@EachandEveryone I've heard good things about the food tours, do you get fed enoigh to make it worth the cost? They do appeal to me! And I'd forgotten about Old Navy, I do like it in there.

EachandEveryone · 22/08/2018 19:34

Op it’s a free tour you pay about $4 at each good degree lace sometimes
Less at the end you pay however much you want well worth it and after you can just go out for s drunk, if you drink.

EachandEveryone · 29/08/2018 10:24

Boston - my favourite city in the world! Go to flour bakery - get their lamb and goat cheese sandwich or their rare beef and onion or their grilled chicken and jicama sandwich - washed down with a raspberry seltzer and finished with a chocolate brownie or a cornmeal lime cookie.

Also recommend Drink - their dark and stormy is to die for as they make their own gingerbeer.

Emma's pizza in Cambridge is a tradition for first night in town

Neptune oyster in N End for fish

Bgood burgers - a local chain all fresh locally grown and tasty

clover foodlab - either the truck at Kendall MIT or there are now a few outposts

JP Licks for ice cream - go to the original one in Jamaica plain and have a sit and wander round Jamaica Pond. Fresh peach is really good if it is on as is their hard (and soft) frozen yogurt

I would go to faneuil hall and qunicy market for atmos, but wouldn't eat there - you can definitely do better either side of the river!

Sorry - this has turned more into a food reply than a s&b reply, but I love the city so much and really need to go back soon!

user1471465987 · 29/08/2018 11:06

oops - didnt look at the date - you are probably back by now!! hope you had a great time and that these tips help someone else!!

KnobJockey · 25/09/2018 08:20

Hi again everyone! I just wanted to come back to say thanks again, and have a bit of a recap on what worked and didn't work. It was hot while we were there. Up to 36 some days, and there is so much walking! It was that hot that sundresses and shorts didn't work- constant sweating meant constant chafing, even with chub rub cream! So I ended up buying a couple of lightweight jumpsuits out there that I lived in in daytime, just strappy ones from H & M. We saw so many people in New York in palazzo pants for day wear, that's definitely what is pack in the future. Whereas Boston was shorts and a vest top through til bedtime! Sandals- even well worn in ones- couldn't cut the pace, and my Skechers were lived in. All in all, we wouldn't rush back to NY, but Boston is definitely on our list to go back to, it was so friendly and fantastic. Sorry for the lack of paragraphs, MN is currently broken apparently.
