Smart tops for work

Where can I get some basic smart tops for work, which are good quality and not too pricey? I'm thinking of simple colours (plain white, black etc) but I don't want a white top that shows the bra underneath. I have bought a couple of tops in the past which I hardly wear as they're so thin (and I like to cover up). I don't want prints, flowers, tassles, other odd bits ...

Or am I getting it wrong with my bras? Do nude colour bras work better than white?

Also if anyone has suggestions for those sports-bra-type tops that are padded, and more comfortable than a normal bra (for the smaller bust!), please let me know!

White bra with a white top will show through. You need nude bras for light clothes.

MotherForkinShirtBalls · 20/08/2018 19:30

Have you looked on La Redoute or Uniqlo? I find both good for basics.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 20/08/2018 20:25

YY to nude bras. I hardly ever wear white ones now.

Oly5 · 20/08/2018 22:01

Boden do great plain coloured tops that last ages and never look odd with bras

MrsFogi · 20/08/2018 22:43

@18toys what is the sizing at HM like? The tops look great.

MrsRubyMonday · 20/08/2018 23:06

I buy mine from M&S, every year they bring out the same style in different colours, it's a thick jersey material, round neck with no collar but a few buttons from the neckline down the front which don't do up so its cut in a V if that makes sense, stops just above the boobs, so no gaping cleavage or stomach which I hate in normal shirts. They usually have 3/4 or elbow length sleeves which I like, and loose and floaty at the bottom. I have black, green, teal and maroon currently, just had a look and they have some new ones in though. Must avoid spending money!

Pumpkintopf · 20/08/2018 23:08

Mrsruby can you link please? Thanks!

Those tops look lovely, I haven't seen those H&M ones in store, but they look nice. I'm not supposed to leave them hanging out though, I know tucked in looks better but I have a bit of a belly so prefer to leave the top hanging out. Boden looks nice but a bit pricey.

You need nude bras to wear underneath tops!

LtGreggs · 21/08/2018 08:25

Can anyone find that M&S top mentioned. Their website is inpenetrable!

I8toys · 21/08/2018 12:26

Mrs Fogi - I am a 10-12 and get the small size

MintedLamb · 21/08/2018 12:38

Has everyone bought the H&M tops already? They're coming up as sold out and I want them!

kshaw · 21/08/2018 12:41

I bought a nude colour cami top from the underwear section in Primark and it solves the bra situation with white tops

EthelThePiratesDaughter · 21/08/2018 12:58

I recommend these tops from M&S. They wash beautifully and don't need ironing, and look great with a plain skirt or trousers.

You can wear white tops, you just need a nude bra. If your bra more or less matches your skin tone nothing will show through.

These are short and long sleeve rather than the 3/4 sleeve I prefer, and from the curve range, but you can see the neckline shape and fit that I mean.

Uniqlo, Cos do plain tops, M&S Autograph shirts are good quality and don’t show underwear.

EdWinchester · 21/08/2018 20:34

No to a white bra. Does anyone wear a white bra these days? (apart from my mil and mum who are in their 80s)

Uniqlo do great basic tops - I have loads.

JaceLancs · 21/08/2018 23:09

I’ve worn white bras for years and only recently became a nude convert
TKMaxx is my first option
Love jaeger
Buy a few marks And Spencer bits

TiffinBox · 22/08/2018 05:07

I just wear a camisole or thin strappy vest underneath thin tops.
