Is an undercut a terrible idea?

I am going to the hairdresser this evening and am soooo bored with my hair - it’s thick, wavy and long and I never do anything with it. I’m going to have 2-3 inches taken off to improve the condition but, inspired by Sam from Pixiwoo, am considering having an undercut to take some of the weight out and relieve my barnet boredom. Does anyone have any experience of this and can tell me whether it’s a brilliant/terrible idea?

I have similar hair and an undercut was great until I decided to grow it out -when my hair grew out horizontally

As with crocs, it's the growing out that's awful. I had an undercut over a year ago, at the back and on the sides, and I've had a 'skirt' at varying lengths of ridiculousness ever since. Only now can I start to tie it back with the rest of my hair.

Bugger - hadn’t really considered growing it out - my hair grows super fast but there would definitely be an awkward phase. On a similar subject, how much maintenance does it need?

A friend of mine ended up shaving hers all off as growing out an undercut was such a nightmare. It's always put me off.

I've just about got a chin length bob. I've got an under cut on one side only, just a small piece. I'm growing my hair, but keeping the under cut for a while. When I decide to grow it I will use a Kirby grip to keep it out of the way.

I have an undercut - I just have the short bits cut short about every 8-9 weeks. I have fine very straight hair (except for the grey hairs which behave like radio antennas, the bastards).

I’ve got a shoulder length bob and an undercut at the back. Do it. It’s so much easier, and sits so much nicer!
I trim mine myself between visits to the hairdresser. I use two mirrors and clippers. It took ages at first but now I’m well practiced it only takes 5 minutes.
I’ve no plans to grow it out but I’d imagine it’ll look crap for a bit!

Am on my way - will make an impulse decision when I get there!
