Is owning more than 20 Cardigans way too much?

Debbiet1981 · 14/08/2018 19:22

Having a look through stuff the other day and realised I have 24.
Going to have to limit as moving to a smaller house next week.

I hate choosing what to keep and not to keep.

I have

One navy
One heavy winter one black
One cropped 50s style one with fabric roses up the front black ( dressy)

That's it

Maria1982 · 14/08/2018 23:57

If you wear them all regularly then it’s not too many. If any get worn once in a blue moon, then they can be donated.

I’ve got a few not sure how many right now ranging from winter to summer, smart to casual- different cardigans for different situations !

Debbiet1981 · 15/08/2018 06:31

Yes most of them are worn regularly as I work in an office, though wear them in diferent situations as well.

Clionba · 15/08/2018 06:38

Well then, no need to get rid of any! They're practical, stylish, worn regularly, value for money, what's the problem??

ChishandFips33 · 15/08/2018 06:43

There are 365 days in the year so 24 doesn't sound bad, if you wear them all unlike me

Maybe cull the ones that no longer look smart/are pilling/faded/out of shape then you can replace when you've moved and not feel guilty

I have lots too but in particular have 2 chunky oversized ones and feel they are 'me' so would like more

ZenNudist · 15/08/2018 06:47

I bet i have that many!

Summer
3 x boden 50s style
3x joules edge to edge
3x woolovers cropped
1x joules cropped
1 x woolovers new edge to edge
Old bright green warehouse crew neck
Old black m&s crew neck
Navy boden jacket style

Winter
Blue chunky hobbs mid length
Fine cashmere m&s long
Old phase 8 grey waterfall

Thats 17! Im sure I've forgotten winter ones. I need more winter ones!!

I was also looking longingly at the fine cashmere edge to edge pure collection ones. D like the grey and purpley blue ones....

Possibly i have cardigan addiction.

CountFosco · 15/08/2018 06:54

Eyes OP suspiciously Are you my sister????

Freshprincess · 15/08/2018 07:02

Jealous. I'm going on the hunt for some new ones, my two favourite work ones are worn out and my favourite blue waterfall slouchy one is faded and pulled and looks a bit scruffy.

Coatigans were a total game changer!

toomanyeastereggsurghh · 15/08/2018 07:46

I probably have more than 24. I have long ones, cropped ones, short sleeved ones, long sleeved ones, some with buttons, some without (more swing style), chunky ones, light summer linen mix ones.... and almost every colour you could think of!

I’m a teacher and they are perfect work wear for me. They can go with almost any outfit.
In fact I bought a new black one the other day (rushed by the buttons so very different to other black ones Blush)

Be proud of your Cardi love!

thefirstmrsdewinter · 15/08/2018 13:48

I've just bought a cupboard specifically to house my cardigans (I have far more than 24 but have never counted them). Aside from I guess underwear, it is my most indispensable garment.

ThriceThriceThice · 15/08/2018 14:25

I don't think 24 is too many. Assuming you live in UK cardigans are brilliant. Apart from the really hot weather we had a few weeks ago, summer evenings can be cool so you need one for the evening. And in the winter offices / homes can be really hot, but outside is cold - so they are a good option. Autumn and Spring are unpredictable, so also helpful. If you like them and wear them, keep them.

Oly5 · 15/08/2018 14:27

Gap have some lovely fine merino crew neck cardis in. Perfect for work

Clionba · 15/08/2018 15:58

You're among cardigan friends here, OP! Tell your husband that we think 24 isn't too many!

StealthNinjaMum · 15/08/2018 16:45

I find cardies - and jackets / blazers - the hardest things to buy. I've got big boobs and find it hard to get ones that fit without straining buttons on the breasts or just a baggy fit over my waist. I'm all for decluttering and have a fairly small wardrobe but I wouldn't get rid of jackets / cardigans unless they were really unflattering or didn't match the rest of my wardrobe.

Debbiet1981 · 15/08/2018 21:12

Yes I am in the UK, North of Scotland and they do come in handy especially in the colder months which will be coming up.

Suppose I do have a cardigan addiction though looks like they are more popular on here than what I had first thought.

OP posts:
Debbiet1981 · 15/08/2018 21:13

Most of them have all been worn at some point within the last 6 months also.

OP posts:
ChishandFips33 · 16/08/2018 00:15

You got me counting today!!

I have 17 longer cardigans - all different colours/shades/textures/thicknesses/styles so justified and about 5 waist length and 4 gilets

let's not mention the 31 skirts!

If you live in Scotland you really need more Grin

Debbiet1981 · 16/08/2018 06:36

Decided I will try to hold on to most of them when moving , possibly all of them with the exception of 1 or 2 starting to fade slightly which can be replaced.

Do I wear them all? Some maybe a couple of times a year, others all the time, and yes ChishandFips33 maybe I do need more living in Scotland lol especially if anything like last winter.

OP posts:
dudsville · 16/08/2018 06:52

I guess you justify it well as they are clearly a key part of your wardrobe!

madcatladyforever · 16/08/2018 06:55

Not enough, build more wardrobes.

TheLastNigel · 16/08/2018 13:50

I was thinking this morning that really cardigans are my favourite clothing item. I wear them almost every day for work and a fair bit on the weekends and yet I only own 5 and rotate them. I really should get some more...
My most favourite is a light grey think knit one-probably from Tesco. It goes with nearly everything.
I'm going to go and buy about 6 this weekend inspired by this thread!

Clionba · 16/08/2018 16:22

TheLastNigel - go for it! I just bought 2 more from John Lewis this afternoon, own brand. You can never have too many.

RoseWhiteTips · 16/08/2018 22:51

Uniqlo do amazing merino cardigans. I have masses of black and navy styles. Gap are also good. Oh and Cos!

Way too many (IMO). Much prefer a jacket or jumper. I have 2 - only ever use one of them on holiday in warm country in the evening.

I find them a bit old lady-ish. Sorry....
