Knee boots and work dresses

Picked up some very very plain flat black leather boots in John Lewis for a total bargain price this week.

This AW I am determined to stick to dresses and boots for work - dresses suit me, I can layer up the thermals and have a few blazers for smartening/warmth. Dresses are all plain jersey and hit just under the knee.

I am short and curvy so planning to keep tights and boots one colour, ie black. Was planning on ankle boots, maybe in an interesting leather. But now I have these plain black knee length numbers do I not bother with ankles and maybe use my left over boot budget for some nice brown knee boots too (a few dresses are navy which I prefer with brown).

Not sure if I'll look grumpy and dated or just stylishly (lol) understated. Any boots I get will be flat/low heeled btw due to knee injury.
