Bright dress - lipstick?

VamonosPest · 31/07/2018 20:34

I have an event to go to and will be wearing this dress, it’s called ‘red’ on the website but it is an orangey red rather than a proper red. What colour lipstick would people suggest to go with it? I usually like a bright lip for a special occasion as it feels more dressy but would that be too much?

If you wanted to go for a red I'd go for MAC So Chaud which is a nice orange red. I also think a bright purple would go - something like MAC Flat out Fabulous

VamonosPest · 31/07/2018 21:49

Thanks @spugzbunny. Do you think a red lip with a red dress is ott, would a nude be better or is bright ok?

What are your lips like? Lipstick on full lips is always a bad idea. If they are thinner then I see no reason not to colour match with the dress.

MoltonSilver · 31/07/2018 21:56

I think a bright red would be lovely with it.

I would go nude but I don't like colourful lipstick on myself. Weird that PP said not bright on full lips, I think it looks much better with plenty of lip space to show off. My lips are really thin and I feel it looks like a bright slash instead of a beautiful lip shape.

If you're confident in colour, then I would match! I wouldn't go true red though, aim for something in the orangey family if that suits you and it will be gorgeous.

VamonosPest · 31/07/2018 22:28

I have pretty full lips. I do like that pic @Molton, thanks. Maybe I need to go red lipstick shopping and then have a trial with the dress!

I think red goes with everything to be honest! It's a classic colour in my eyes!

RosinaAlmaviva · 01/08/2018 08:07

Definitely a bright red.

Maybelline Siren in Scarlet
Max Factor Ruby Tuesday or Marilyn Sunset Red
Soap & Glory Rougenie
Rimmel Take The Stage or Mayfair Red Lady
Joan Collins Divine Lips Crystal
Besame Victory Red or Red Hot Red
Revlon Fire and Ice (be warned this is very bright!)

cakeandteajustforme · 01/08/2018 08:23

I would go peachy nude

rightknockered · 01/08/2018 10:20

Is would wear a bright pink. Red is difficult to get right when wearing red clothes. Pink looks like a deliberate clash and I like clashing colours

Judydreamsofhorses · 01/08/2018 10:36

I would also clash with a hot pink. Fenty Candy Venom is my current fave, but I also like Nars Luxembourg.

TimeIhadaNameChange · 01/08/2018 10:37

Why don't you take the dress with you when you go shopping for lipstick?

NameChangeUni · 01/08/2018 12:24

Personally I would go nude, red/orange is too ‘matchy’ for me personally. I think it’s an outdated trend to match your makeup/nails/accessories etc to the same colour as your dress.

KatieMarieJ · 01/08/2018 12:32

I would go red and randomly I've just picked up a gorgeous long lasting red in Wilkinson's of all places - their Essence range. It is longer lasting than any of my ££s more expensive ones. And I don't mean as a stain that fades I mean the full on impact for hours. Fabulous.

PutYerClawsAway · 01/08/2018 12:52

Hi OP,
first I would ignore advice about lip size and outdated trends.
Second I would try out different lipstick shades with the dress. You'd be surprised how as well as nudes/peaches vs reds, different reds (including pinks) can alter the whole look. You might want to tone down eye make up if going for a red, to balance things out.
Third, decide which look you feel most fabulous and confident in and go for it!
Shade-wise MAC are always good (but I find some shades a tad drying) but my favourites are probably:
Rouge D'Armani in 401 (a vibrant orangey red);
Kevyn Aucoin in Carliana (a gorgeous true red); and
Lancôme L'Absolu Rouge in 186 Idole (a bright, matte coral red).

Have a great time.Smile

KatieMarieJ did your Wilkinson's shade have a name or number? I will check it out if I get the chance!

KatieMarieJ · 01/08/2018 13:06

@Putyerclawsaway - that'd have been useful wouldn't it? LoL. Yes it's Shade 12 in the Ultra Last Instant Colour range called "Head to-ma-toes". I'll take a pic now and one later on and post them both together as a before after type thing. =)

OyWithThePoodles · 01/08/2018 13:12

I always worry about the OTT thing as well. I would go red in the same tone, but in a sheer or gloss formulation, e.g. Clinique Chubby Stick in Two Ton Tomato. Or a full coverage bright lipstick, I'll blot down to a stain or, if it's really bright, put a dust of translucent powder over the top to make it less full on.

PutYerClawsAway · 01/08/2018 13:18

Thank you I'll check in later!

ovenchips · 01/08/2018 14:30

I too think full lips can take colour better than thinner lips!

But I would also prob go peachy nude. If you did go bright lipstick à la Taylor Swift IMHO the key to it is to have very natural looking everything else: very natural foundation, minimal eye make up and soft, natural hair. I think bright lips plus lots of eye make up would spoil the balance and the impact of the colour.

Skarossinkplungerridesagain · 01/08/2018 16:44

I'd go red, but with a discreet eye shadow and black winged eyeliner. Old Hollywood style.

Theycouldhavechoseneve · 01/08/2018 16:50

Dior Trafalgar would be a great match. It’s worth the money, pigmentation is fantastic

VamonosPest · 13/08/2018 22:21

Thanks for all the advice, I went for red in the end, but blotted it down as poodles suggested, I am usually quite conservative with the colour of my clothes so it felt good to be bold for once!
