Do cobblers still exist?

When I was a kid if my shoes wore out before I grew out of them we went to a cobbler to get them mended. I never see them anymore. Do they still exist? Are shoes cobblable? Or are shoes a disposable item now?

Yes. I can think of at least 3 within walking distance of my house.

DieAntword · 27/07/2018 08:36

What kind of prices do they charge?

I've had a couple of pairs of boots re heeled when they wear down, especially if it's a pair I love.

Sloanriley · 27/07/2018 08:42

Our two local key cutters also do shoe repairs, I get my Chelsea boots redone every year!

BitOutOfPractice · 27/07/2018 08:43

There's two in my small town.

Redcrayons · 27/07/2018 08:48

We've got one in our town. Also does key cutting and replaces smashed phone screens.

I take my heels in when the tips wear down. There's always a couple of days wait so I'm assuming that they're quite busy.

Yes, I take boots or shoes to either a local independent cobbler or a local saddlery.

ApolloandDaphne · 27/07/2018 13:18

Of course they do. We have an independent one and a Timpsons in our small town.

BunnyCarr · 27/07/2018 13:19

Yes, there's a very good one in my town.

i get my DDs posh loafers re-heeled, its about £8 a pop but still cheaper than new shoes.

Pippylou · 27/07/2018 13:21

There is an amazing lady in Machynlleth, creates shoes and then mends them when they wear. Not cheap but everlasting. I think she's popular as she now charges for fitting appointments.

Of course they do. There’s a Timpsons in every big Sainsburys and Tesco I can think of within a 20 mile radius of here. I go to a local independent one that charges about £8 for reheeling a pair of shoes, and they’ve been able to mend things that Timpsons said couldn’t be mended. I buy good quality leather shoes and boots and get them reheeled and resoled as necessary and they last me for years.
