Hygienist/dentist?

Hi! This might seem like a very stupid question, but what is the difference? When I see the dentist (very basic check-up) he sort of cleans my teeth but the whole thing is over in about 10 minutes and I think it costs about £20.

I want my teeth to look a bit whiter and I'm hoping a hygienist will be able to help a bit? Do they have all kinds of fancy polishing machines that'll give me a lift? And can I just go to one privately without a dentist's check-up?

Thank you!

I had my first hygienist appointment 6 months ago and it was a revelation! My whole adult life I just had the basic scale and polish from the Dentist. The hygienist was extremely thorough, to the point it was a bit painful but well worth it. She suggested a few new things to try with regards to flossing and using a single tufted brush for a difficult to clean tooth at the back. My mouth has never felt so clean and my teeth did look brighter. I think it’s a good incentive to pay more attention to how you look after your teeth, after the appointment. Yes you can pay privately without needing a dental checkup first.

Thank you JDSTER that’s very helpful!

Anyone have any recommendations for north or central London?
