I keep hearing about this and wondering whether other people who have it love it? My hair is quite dark (very dark brown almost black) so it would be quite a process to get done. Does the hair need to be wavy?

Balayage is a beautiful way to colour hair, but you need someone who has been trained how to do it. I would t go to any old street corner hairdressers who are mainly used to doing woven or cap highlights.

Find a good colourist and they will be able to advise you on what colour will be best for you. For very dark hair I'd advise going no lighter than a nice caramel/beige blonde.

You don't have to have wavy hair, I think it's generally styled that way because it adds further dimension to the colour. If you do a google image search there's lots that are straight hair too. Have a look at take some to the hairdresser and see what they can achieve for you. Good luck!! X

Op make sure they do a test swatch first. My (very dark) hair just doesn't lighten enough with bleach and my balayage was orange. You're not meant to rebleach hair so despite the salon (a really highly-rated colour salon in Shoreditch) saying that 'over time' you can work on getting the result you want, irl this would have involved living with orange ends for months. They will tell you the toner will sort it but toner only works on blonde hair, so it may take some yellow out but it just isn't a solution for orange hair.

I must have spent around £300+ trying to get it right and in the end I had it mostly cut off and put a blue Directions on what was left.

If your skin tone is golden a more yellow/orange tone might suit, but mine is ruddy and the orange just looked awful.

When I was looking at photos (before having my hair done) I did think, hmm, that's a lot of tonged hair and my hair is stick-straight. Before you commit ask lots of questions about styling, eg 'Will I have to do anything special to style my hair for it to look like the photo?'
