Coloured hair in the workplace

I will probably be returning to work soon after 2/3 years at home.

My hair is currently bleached and cut short and I've dyed it a number of interesting (non natural) colours

I know coloured hair is fairly mainstream now but is it still frowned upon in formal(ish) workplaces?

How much is too much? Eg blonde with a hint of rose gold is v different to neon pink!

Just trying to plan ahead a bit so I have time to tone down my image if need be!

I have an outward facing civil service role, and have just changed from neon pink hair to blue. I am fairly senior and got my most recent promotion with pink hair. I have colleagues with green, purple, bright yellow and rainbow hair.

I think it's all dependent on the company you're working for tbh. I've often died my hair unnatural colours over the past 10 years and different places have had different rules. I've worked with public in a restaurant and was allowed bright pink and electric blue, I've worked in two different office settings, one wouldn't allow me to have anything unnatural, the other was fine with me dying my hair a different colour of the rainbow practically fortnightly and I'm currently working in a kitchen (so not seeing customers face-face, and wearing a hair net and hat) but I put a very pale peach over my blonde last year and got told I had to remove it or dye my hair back to a natural colour within the week.

So I'd say you would be best speaking to the management of the company, as it really can vary dependent on their rules.

Thank you for your encouraging replies!

Last time I worked in an office, I didn't have the slightest inkling that I would in future colour my hair and so paid no attention to what others did or what the rules were.

I need to get a job first and although I do something specific In a technical role, it could find me working anywhere from a bank to a small tech co or public body.

I could always wear my ordinary brown wig to interview 😂 (I lost my hair to chemo and have coloured it since it grew back recently)
