Box dye over a balayage?

I’m naturally a redhead although it’s slightly grey/mousier than it used to be. I got a subtle balayage about 3 months back. It was beautiful to start but my whole hair has lightened now- probably a mix of sun/chlorine on holiday. It’s a kind of yellow brassy colour now and horrible. Can I put a box dye over it- I was wanting to do a light brown/red box colour. How will it take on the lightened areas?

It might go a little bit browny green! I’ve made this mistake soooo many times!! Why don’t you go to the hairdresser and just get a toner?

Dont do it. Its really hard do dye over blonde without cocking it up.

If its yellow and brassy a good purple shampoo will sort it out. Fudge is highly recommended on here.

Ah ok I’ll step away from the home dye!

What’s a toner?

It is a colour hairdressers put over the colour they do, usually at the basin, to get a better tone of colour or to knock out brassiness. Like zippyswife said - a purple shampoo might work too although it would make your blonde more blonde again rather than brassy.

Fudge is good but if you want something today beach in boots has a silver shampoo (which is purple) leave on the brassy bits for 15 mins or so then wash off, it is a shampoo so may dry your hair, get a little sachet of conditioner to put on afterwards!
