All in one or two piece swimsuit in your 40s??

Lovingholiday · 06/07/2018 22:32

What do you wear?
I like to look classy, so is all in one better option?
I am in my 40s, size 10, not very tonned tummy, boyish figure, small breasts.
Going on a long haul holiday
Can you help me find a swimsuit? I do not mind spending up to 60/80 pounds
Thanks

I personally prefer one piece for my not so toned body, but lots of people on mumsnet will tell you to wear a bikini if that is what you want.

Debenhams has a good range, including those with tummy control: www.debenhams.com/women/swimwear.

Also check out Asos for a cheaper but gaudier range: here

Being flatchested myself, I prefer a less V-shaped plunging neckline with a little ruching. I also find plain colours, rather than prints, more stylish. How about this style with tummy control from Debenhams. It comes in different colours

Ummmmgogo · 06/07/2018 23:51

2 piece definitely x

TwinkleMerrick · 06/07/2018 23:52

Tortycat · 06/07/2018 23:53

Wellhellothere101 · 06/07/2018 23:58

The Boden swimsuits are nice. I'm in my 40s, size 8-10 and pretty flat chested and I think they are really flattering. I have the floral one linked above as it's in the sale.

marciagetscreamed · 07/07/2018 00:19

40
Size 10
Toned tummy

Go for a two piece!! Make the most of it.
May I ask, how did you get this toned tummy?! Grin

Coughy · 07/07/2018 00:20

Wear whatever you want. I never had a toned stomach even in my 20s so its not an age thing imo.

hairylegsonshow · 07/07/2018 00:26

Marcia - I think she said she has not got a very toned tummy Wink

You sound like you have a very similar figure to me. I wore a tankini on a recent holiday in Europe and was pretty much the only one on the beach not wearing a bikini! There were all ages, shapes and sizes in them, and it was so nice to see women not feeling too self conscious to where one.

I guess it just ultimately depends on what you would feel the most comfortable in - can you try a few on to see?

marciagetscreamed · 07/07/2018 00:52

Oh yes, now I have read it back Grin

But my stance on this remains the same. Wear a two piece! You're forty, when you're ninety it might be a bit different (but still totally okay, before I get accused of being ageist).

Swimming costumes (all in ones) are for the swimming lessons with your kids and you don't want to distract anyone (IME) but holidays?! Go nuts

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 07/07/2018 01:39

Whichever suits you best. I always wear a one-piece because I look better in them and feel more comfortable but there's no age limit to either.

OlennasWimple · 07/07/2018 01:43

It can also depend where you are going

Where I live everyone wears a bikini, from the tiny college students in their early 20s to the large, wrinkly grannies. Wearing a one piece really stands out, which is usually the opposite of what said one piece wearer is looking for.

TroubledLichen · 07/07/2018 02:06

One pieces seem to be having a moment. Where I live a lot of the younger women are in a swimsuit (cut out panels optional) and the bikini wearers are in their 30s or older. But I say wear whatever you feel comfortable in. Boden swimsuits and bikinis and both excellent whatever you decide though!

SpeckleDust · 07/07/2018 02:12

47 size 12-14, not v toned tummy but fairly well-proportioned and decent skin. Always wear a bikini on a beach holiday as I’d be roasting in a swimsuit (and only ever wear one for swimming). Wear what you would feel most comfort in. There’s always someone bigger/wrinkling/saggier than you by the pool and noone cares anyway!

melodybirds · 07/07/2018 02:14

Two piece. Air your tummy and get more of a tan. It's holiday!

Wildernessie · 07/07/2018 02:29

If you've got it-get it out😉. Cup ruffles/beautiful strappy-back detailing&1shoulder/off the shoulder atheletic styles all look great on small framed boyish chests.id live in a bikini all summer long over there if a was a small chested size10..im a larger chested 14with a butt/boobs that need "restraining/confinement' 😂due to lots of water based/beach activities so personally rock a rashie&shorts combo(or 1 piece
racer-back or halterneck for pool based stuff)get hours&hours of sun-exposure6mths of yr here in Queensland,Oz..enjoy that bikini/hols xx

SheGotBetteDavisEyes · 07/07/2018 02:42

9 times out of 10, a bikini is more flattering. No-one cares about someone else's stomach muscles or thighs on a beach anyway, do they?

A blocky swimsuit might suit some, but I honestly think that bikinis nearly always look better!

LoveBeingAMum555 · 07/07/2018 05:49

I am late 40s, and a size 8, 34A bra size. I find it really hard to get a comfy swimming costume that doesn't squash my boobs completely flat and make me look about 12years old. Tesco do amazing bikinis with tops that give you boost and lift but aren't too skimpy. The bottoms have fold over pants that you can adjust and even tuck your tummy into if needs be. A lot of bikinis don't come in 34A bra size which is depressing.

Luglio · 07/07/2018 06:09

Careful, LoveBeing, saying you're a 34a will bring the interventionists flocking. bet you're really a 30dd

CountFosco · 07/07/2018 06:19

Another vote for wear what you want as long as it's appropriate for the activity. What you need for 80 lengths 5x a week is different from what you need on a beach holiday. And what you need on a beach holiday depends where the beach is. North of Scotland requires more coverage (wetsuits preferable if you're going in the water!) than south of Spain.

flamingnoravera · 07/07/2018 06:27

I hate bikinis, I don't think they are flattering on me or anyone else. It feels like I am out in public in my bra and pants. I also swim loads so it's one piece swimsuits for me at any age.

minionitis · 07/07/2018 06:45

I have the most stretch marked belly on the planet. Plus after 4 stone weight loss nobody wants to see that flappy stretch marked bit at the front, so although it’s an all in one for me. I’d give anything to be able to go out in a bikini once more. Before I had dd I only ever wore the teeniest bikinis.

Just go for it I’d say. Wear whatever you feel comfortable in. If I just had a not so toned belly or something like that I’d definitely wear a bikini. People like me will just be jealous Smile

PrimalLass · 07/07/2018 06:47

I'm not a size 10 and don't have a toned stomach. I still feel and look better in a bikini on holiday.

Everyone else will be in a bikini. I felt daft in a swimsuit the first year we went away.

Stillwishihadabs · 07/07/2018 06:50

Bikinis are lovely at 30+ degrees.

LightAsTheBreeze · 07/07/2018 07:13

I would probably wear a bikini as probably in 10 years time you won't want to wear one so I would wear one and it will look very nice

carrie74 · 07/07/2018 07:25

Are you me? Going through a similar dilemma. When it's just us 4 on holiday somewhere, I tend to wear a bikini - everyone else is wearing one and a one-piece looks conspicuous. Colourful and fun is the way to go.

But we also always go on a group holiday, and I feel slightly more conspicuous then, so have been buying some one pieces to try. In the past these from J Crew (sale prices!!) have served me very, very well, but I'd like there to be more colour options. https://www.jcrew.com/uk/p/womenscategory/swim2/ruched-bandeau-onepiece-swimsuit/B6818?colorr_name=bistro-blue

I've just ordered this from Boden (have had success from them previously as well): http://www.boden.co.uk/en-gb/womens-swimwear/swimsuits/s0006-mbl/womens-noble-blue-wild-flower-amalfi-bandeau-swimsuit

And also ordered a few similar styles from M&S.

I find that bandeau type much more flattering than a V neck on my tiny boobs, not much flattening. I also did a mega order from ASOS, but they're all going back.

However, I do much prefer buying bikinis, so much more variety and easier to find styles that suit my (very imperfect but who gives a shit Grin) body.
