To be honest I buy cheap bags, use them daily for work until they’re trashed then get another. So I’m debating whether to invest in a leather one this time if it will stay looking nicer for longer!

Years I buy another from want rather than need if I’m honest.

Day to day I use a Kipling - I’m a housewife. If I worked I would have a leather tote x2. This is what I had when I did work. When I stopped I gave them to charity.

Mine last a year, my mum gets me a new one every Christmas, not expensive though £50 - £75 ish

generally about 2 years, I seem to get one every other christmas!

I used to only buy cheap ones but in the last 10 years I've gone slightly upmarket. I've got three; a fun one, a black one and an oxblood one.

Years too long - they're out of fashion before they start to fail. But I am an expensive handbag fan, and very mean with it, the sort of person who annoyingly buys a real Mulberry in a charity shop for a fiver.

The longest lasting bags are Prada and Chloe - they just never die. Coach indestructible too. Mulberry are dodgy and always go at the side seams, Margiela last for years but do 'distress' remarkably quickly and I no longer touch Jaeger as it's all plastic.

You know that cringeingly precious advice about cleaning and stuffing bags with tissyooooooo before storing? Works. If your handbag is worth money, or more to the point love, 10 mins' TLC gives you another year.

Mine last around 2 years but I'm heavy on them, as I have a longish commute into Central London for work.

I pay around £50-£80 for work bags, as I know they will get trashed on my commute. Leather does last longer, but only good quality.

A proper leather bag should last years, synthetic can easily go in 6 months of heavy use (as learnt when I worked in the bag dept of a department store and customers would try to get refunds...)

I've taken leather bags back to the shop after a year when they've failed due to poor strap attachment- and been given a credit note.

I've currently got an Orla Keily bag - it's about 2 years old, had much use, and looks as good as new - cost was around £90.

Years. I mostly buy leather which I look after well and use leather cream etc. The only leather handbag I can remember having to get rid of was because one of our cats had an accident in it and I couldn't get rid of the smell!

I have a few oilcloth/nylon etc but never ever buy fake leather bags or shoes.

About a year. I trash bags so I tend to buy cheaper ones as it doesn’t seem to matter how good quality they are. I use the same one most days until it looks like something a tramp would reject.

I have three Jigsaw leather bags that I rotate between, and they’ve lasted years and aged brilliantly. I bought them on sale, so about £100. I always carry a separate canvas tote bag for work with my lunch and other bits and bobs, but do cram quite a bit into them.

I've had my favourite slouchy brown leather bag, which I use most days, for more than a decade! I've just had the zip replaced and the lining mended and it's as good as new.

I only buy high end bags (Mulberry (used to buy, not keen on newer designs and quality of leather), Bottega Veneta and so on) and my oldest bag is over 15 years old and still going strong.
I tend to buy bags that I am certain I will keep using and that are not too delicate/made of leather that will wear badly (there are some types of leather that will scratch easily or where the colour will wear off or where the leather is just poor quality).

I stopped buying cheaper bags because they'd be worn out so quickly that it was more expensive than buying the higher end bags.
I look after the bags - treat them with leather care products, make sure they are stuffed and in dust bags when not in use and I try to avoid that they get scratched, but I'm not precious about them.

I tend to only buy bags on sale (although my oldest Mulberry is a Bayswater which never used to be on sale - but it was bought back when the prices were fairly reasonable).

Until I get bored of them but I won't buy non-leather bags. I have a pristine 2 year old Coach, a 5 year old Mulberry Bayswater which went at the corner in about a year but has been repaired, and a second hand Mulberry Rosemary which was made in 2007. The rest are mainly Fossil, plus a couple of Longchamps. I don't think I've ever destroyed a bag!

I usually spend up to about £150 on a bag. The Coach was £125 in a January sale.

I tend to buy Mulberry but in sales/outlet or pre-loved. But as previous poster said, I’m careful which leather. The old Mulberry NVT leather lasts and is tough. The newer shiny leather isn’t....at least not the way use bags!
I spray with Carbon Pro spray when I buy them to water proof them. Then use Colonil products to nourish and clean the leather after I’ve had the bag a while. I also restore list colour using shoes Cream (NoT polish!)
I too, stiff with tissue or cushion pads from ikea are fab. I buy felt liners for all my bags to protect the lining and help the bag keep its shape, as most leather will go baggy eventually. I keep them all in dust bags in my wardrobe. With that kind of care bags can last years and years. So work out pretty much the same as buying cheaper bags frequently and don’t add to landfill.
I also rate Coach and I’ve a few Ralph Lauren leather bags that are going well. My DSis in law is a Louis Vuitton fan, she has the coated canvas speedy and a couple of others which look amazing after pet a decade of abuse! She does not care for bags at all and she admits that why she goes for LV.
I also think Fossil and Jigsaw do lovely leather bags which can last if looked after, and are much cheaper, especially in sales or at outlet.
My mum had had Radley bags which have deteriorated at a shocking rate for the price, so I personally steer clear....even though I’ve seen I nice one!
I’ll admit bags are my ‘thing’ so I do spend a bit, but I put effort into caring for them. I can see why others think I’m a bit mad

Handbags wear out ? I still have almost all the bags I have bought in the last 18 years...all are still ok to use. One Next one I've had to resew the lining but that's about it. Most are not expensive...I've a few Radleys which were the dearest ones and I know some on MN look down on Radley

I've had my Louis Vuitton Neverfull for 8 years - it still looks brand new and I've used it a couple of times a week on average over that period. I expect to use it for at least another 8.

I've had some of mine over 20 years and they're still in excellent condition, although they do get a spa treatment from time to time. I only buy designer bags, mainly Chanel and Hermes, so wouldn't expect to see much wear on them even with heavy use. I also store mine carefully in acid free tissue etc.

I have a bit of a handbag buying problem, but it does mean they never end up trashed as I swap them round so regularly. Most of my bags were fairly pricey, Mulberry, Alexander wang, Louis Vuitton, prada and a couple of Chanel bags, but now most of the time I just use a fabric tote bag so I can cart around all the crap you need for a toddler without worrying about ruining my naice bags. I store them all carefully so they should all still be good for DD to use when she is a teen, I’ve had some of them almost a decade and they are still all in great condition. I had to have one repaired when I overloaded the bag and the strap broke, but it was easy enough to sort out.

I got an Anya hindmarch maxi zip satchel for my 30th and have used it every day without fail for 8 and a half years. It's as good as New and the leather has improved with age. I only have three bags. This one, a small evening one and a beach bag.

My Cath kidston is coming to the end of it's life - It's 2.5yrs old

My coach bag is a year old, used 5 days a week and heavily used, and still looks immaculate

I have a Burberry handbag that is 15 years old and still in excellent condition.

Yes designer bags are an expensive outlay but they last for so long so are really good value for money.
