What bra do I wear underneath a racer back top?

I've bought a nice, loose-fitting, silky racerback top - but I feel like my normal bra is too "on show" (the underarms of the top are quite low exposing the sides of the bra and obviously you see the straps at the back) I am a 30E, so need support, should I be wearing some sort of crop top over a bra? or find a racerback bra? all I can find is sporty ones, which don't work under the top. Would love some advice. Thanks!

I’ve got a very small black wonderbra type of thing with very slim plain straps that I can get away with under most tops like this and the whole style of the bra is small too iyswim. It doesn’t show at the sides and can be fairly tucked under close - together straps. The only thing is I’m the same size as you and they don’t go up to an E in the style so I had to make do with a 32D. Not perfect but does the job.

Just wear one of your current bras differently.

Pull straps a bit longer longer. Tie them together with a bit of ribbon/string/wool at the back to make a racerback.

Easier if someone else does it for you.

PatrickMerricksGoshawk · 04/07/2018 22:50

You can do a thing with a paperclip - attach the straps together at the back so they go under the racer back. I keep seeing it on those stupid “life hack” compilations (stupid and yet I watch them...) but haven’t tried it!

CiderwithSusie · 04/07/2018 22:50

I'd like a recommendation too, being similar size to you. Strapless are either too uncomfortable to wear all day or just don't stay up, and really visible bra looks rubbish to me (although a lot of people don't seem to care!). I've just googled and Freya Deco Vibe convertible looks like it might work?

bruffin · 04/07/2018 22:52

You can get clips and straps on amazon or ebay that will pull straos in

CiderwithSusie · 04/07/2018 22:52

I've tried paperclip and plastic 'converters' which do not work in my experience! Maybe if you have smallish boobs but with bigger ones the strain is too much!

MizCracker · 04/07/2018 22:52

You could wear a racer back sports bra or bralet/crop top, depending on the size of your boobs and how squashed they might look?

I ditched regular bras for crop tops two years ago and haven’t looked back. So comfortable! But I have quite small boobs, which helps.

Here we are, this one. The smallest, neatest bra I’ve ever owned. Boulder holder avoidance here. Grin

CiderwithSusie · 04/07/2018 22:53

Crosspost with bruffin - maybe mine was too cheapo but it snapped!

Branleuse · 04/07/2018 22:55

I've got a couple of hiccups and juice bras with cross backs. Theyre super comfy and you could get her to coordinate the fabric!

AnguaResurgam · 04/07/2018 22:55

You really don't need to buy a clip. Just tie them together with whatever you have to hand.

Diamondsandpearls01 · 04/07/2018 22:57

thanks - all very helpful - will try the tying up thing first - but also wonder if it will hold the strain!

The only problem I can envisage with tying with straps or clips, is that the normal bras I have come up too high around the side.

I bought a proper racer bra or two from
Amazon, but found that they either show too much on the back (thicker/wider than the racer back top that is supposed to hide the bra), or the clip fastening is not aligned with the place that the bra and top come together on the back. For example, the bra sits high and the top sits lower, exposing the bra.

Added to that, I have to go for cotton mix or I get red sores where the straps sit.

It's a nightmare!

AnguaResurgam · 04/07/2018 23:13

They won't get pulled up,at the sides if you can lengthen the straps (to allow for them taking a different path round your back). But I can see how it would be a problem if straps were already at the maximum.

NotClear · 04/07/2018 23:36

But if I put my normal bra on without straps, it would still sit too high at the sides. I think racer back tops seem to sit much lower are the sides than normal tops do. At least mine seem to!

ferrier · 05/07/2018 02:50

You don't want to do makeshift measures!
It is possible to get racerback styles in normal bras. Debenhams do some.
But if it's just casual I just make sure my bra straps are the same colour as the top.

AuntieStella · 05/07/2018 06:13

If you wear racerbacks a lot, then buying a specific bra might probably be worth it. But a mulitiway might be the more useful type to get.

But the DIY solution (DD tied me in me) works brilliantly, was totally secure, and doesn't cost anything (money or opportunity cost of time shopping)

LizTaylorsFabulousTurban · 05/07/2018 06:15

Strapless bra?

Happycow · 05/07/2018 07:23

That m&s one looks good - I have similar problems with bras showing at the sides and I'm a FF so not many options! But I go with a plain colour (blue/black/white etc) in that smooth fabric That t-shirt bras are usually made from - none with mesh anywhere! - and then whatever you flash could be bra, could be cami top/boob tube thing , who knows?!

EmmaStone · 05/07/2018 09:14

I've used the converters which work well, but I also now wear a type of bras where the straps are convertible, so I make them into a cross-back which works pretty well with racer back tops (and all the sleeveless stuff I'm wearing at the moment because of the weather!).

Mine are Body by Victoria's Secret.

MrPotatosGirlfriend · 05/07/2018 09:24

I've this bra, which is just the best for racebacks, but unfortunately it's only up to a DD

Sorry

Several manufacturers add the racerback clips to bras nowadays. Freya Deco has it, at least some models. This one for example
