So, in a month or so my DP and I are going out for a nice dinner. Nowhere overly smart, but smarter than normal. And romance and stuff. We don't go out a lot, and frankly I just want to take the opportunity to pretty myself up a bit for a change. I live in vest tops and jeans outside of work and skater style casual dresses when it's hot. Frankly, I'd like to look nice, and, ahem, attempt for a bit glam, though not too OTT. I tend to automatically pick up anything that comes in black, but I'm not wedded to it as a colour choice.

I'm not keen on my upper arms. I've lost 5 stone in the last year, and still have a way to go, so they are still kinda flabby. I tend towards lower cut tops, not super low cut, but I have reasonable boobage that I think means anything too high cut makes me look, um, matronly.

Can't see my legs in the photo, but they are probably my best feature. I carry most of my weight around my middle, so I avoid things that are tight around the waist. I'm a size 18/20 depending on fit and 5'8" when not slouching.

I'm 40, but probably don't act it.

I tried to be useful and look online and give examples of what I liked and ask if they would work, but frankly, I have no idea what I am doing which is why I need help.

By the way, I feel quite shaky even asking this question, I've not got a very positive relationship with my body, and I feel nervous about asking people's opinions. But I need to start to get better at living with myself, and I think making an effort to look nice for a nice evening out might do me some good.

I know this seems a small thing, but it's a huge thing for me to start seeing myself as something other than someone who should be hidden away for the sake of other people not being forced to look at me. So any advice would be so appreciated.

If you've lost weight have you measured you're boobs? It can be hard to properly work out how to drop sizes with bras I think. Boob or bust is a good online one although I think my back size is out slightly on it, or you could try a bra shop where you can try then on afterwards.

It will help any be outfit wear better if your breasts are where they're meant to be and comfy

Watchingthecloudsflyby · 02/07/2018 16:17

I really like the 8 Cecelia

BabyItsAWildWorld · 02/07/2018 16:24

I like several of those you've linked to, and think you are identifying the right shapes for you (except the first one which is too loose, and will just look like an attempt to cover up), but I think the fabrics and colours make the dresses seem quite 'ordinary'. Which is fine but you want 'glam' and I think you want a 'wow, is that you??' moment.
So I'd try to avoid black, as it's your usual go to.

How about these:

www.bravissimo.com/products/phoenix-dress-red-pd480red/ I think this would look fab on you!

Notquiteagandt · 02/07/2018 16:30

Silk fred had some nice flowery wrap dresses or skater style dresses. But theres a bit more to them if makes sense.

Something like this maybe??

www.silkfred.com/boutiques/oeuvre/clothing/green-floral-wrap-over-maxi-dress

Loads choices on there that are beautiful. Some are a bit young. But sieve through and some lovely pieces.

GeorgeTheHippo · 02/07/2018 16:32

I like the Celeste dress you have linked to, and you can wear black accessories if that is what you already have. I think it would suit your shape (if it fits of course!)

I think you should wear heels if you like them and they will make your legs look great.

HalfStar · 02/07/2018 16:51

Would you be up for a top and jeans or some kind of summery trousers?

Mango Violeta have a sale on and there are nice things like shop.mango.com/ie/plus-size/shirts-blouses/floral-print-blouse_21017714.html?c=52&n=1&s=RebajasT2_violeta this top. Do you have your ears pierced? Dramatic earrings are still very in and are a great way to feel dressed up without too much drama elsewhere. Loads of good styling ideas chez Mango I think.

I'd not spend too much OP, simply because you can find a great going out outift fairly cheap in the sales - and if you're anything like me you simply won't get the wear out of spending £££.

HalfStar · 02/07/2018 16:52

The other thing about big earrings is that they draw the eye upwards and away from one's middle, if you're feeling concious about that.

HalfStar · 02/07/2018 16:53

Oh and lastly get your hair done! You'll feel amazing, just a loose messy bun maybe but professionally done!

BabyItsAWildWorld · 02/07/2018 17:21

I agree about big earrings and love the earrings on the Violeta model!

I think the outfit may be too casual though, but you let us know how dressy/glam you want to be!

Yes to a messy bun professionally done!

BohemianLikeMe · 02/07/2018 17:24

Baby - I like all of those dresses, but I love the Coast ruffly one and the Bravissimo red one. That made me do a little 'Oooooo'. I think that's what I like. It's very slightly unusual but in quite a simple way. I don't like fuss.

I think I'm struggling, because it's so long since I looked at clothes modelled by non-plus size models. It means I can't quite see in my head how they'd hang on me. I mean, obviously plus-sized models aren't as big as me, but you get a better feel for it when you look at them. If that makes sense.

I'm kinda wedded to the idea of a dress I think. I'm so non-girly day to day, that I do kind of want to do the 'ta-daa!' moment as cheesy as it is.

Like the idea of getting my hair done.

BohemianLikeMe · 02/07/2018 17:26

That red Bravissimo dress is exactly the sort of level of glam I'm aiming for. Like the idea of big earrings too.

Thank you all by the way. This is really, really helpful. And quite exciting. I haven''t thought about clothes other than practically in about 15 years.

OP posts:
BohemianLikeMe · 02/07/2018 17:31

Oh, it occurs to me I should have said, that I have quite a lot of tattoos. My left arm is fairly covered and my right upper arm is too. So I suppose I tend towards clothes that are plain, in terms of one colour, or colour blocking, rather than patterns. Otherwise I risk clashing with my clothes!

OP posts:
BabyItsAWildWorld · 02/07/2018 17:35

Yes when I saw the red one I thought, I bet that wuold be fabulous on you!

It's just the right shape for you, but a bit more structured than the daytime jersey versions, and the red makes it very glam/dressed up!

If you can, go to Bravissmo and try it on, as it can be hard to be sure whether you are a curvy/really curvy/super curvy in thier sizes. But if you don't live near a shop, look at their size guide and order 2 in the sizes that you think might fit.
They are very helpful and give lots of advice, either in the shop, or livechat on the website.

BabyItsAWildWorld · 02/07/2018 17:38

If you do try it, post a pic for us.

I'm quite excited for you!Grin

i think the red would look good with your tatoos; simple but dramatic.

BohemianLikeMe · 02/07/2018 17:45

If you do try it, post a pic for us.

Oh. I will!

Check out Jolie Moi - they have some fab dresses x

Whatvabout the whistles paige dress:

www.johnlewis.com/whistles-paige-v-neck-dress/p3483071?sku=237305964&s_kwcid=2dx92700030046583876&tmad=c&tmcampid=2&gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6MS2t6eB3AIVCyjTCh0MWwtaEAQYBCABEgJ8x_D_BwE&gclsrc=aw.ds

It comes up large, so the 16 will definitely fit you. I’m 5’10 and its just above my knee (it looks really short in the photo for some reason).

With red mid heel block heels:

But do go to a Bobbi Brown makeup counter and ask for a makeover. Even if it feels scary you will come back feeling fabulous and have lots of ideas.

If there is a blonk eyebrow bar near you, go and get a threading treatment.

Book yourself for a pedicure and a manicure too.

Have a lovely time and do let us know what you choose. 😘

BabyItsAWildWorld · 02/07/2018 22:22

I have that whistles Paige dress!
I think it's a good choice if you're going for understated elegance (I like to think Grin)

TokyoSushi · 02/07/2018 22:27

No real advice OP but you sound absolutely lovely! Smile

starday · 02/07/2018 22:32

Have you looked at monsoon ?

Also definitely try a make up counter - depends on budget as make up can be quite expensive but Bobbi Brown are nice and boots no.7

Sammysquiz · 03/07/2018 06:48

Agree with those who’ve said have your hair done. I had mine styled before an event last weekend and felt so much more confident because of it. And it’s one less thing to worry about!

MrsSnitch · 03/07/2018 07:03

Look up Poppy’s Style blog - she has your same body shape and is over 40

MrsSnitch · 03/07/2018 07:03

She has tattoos also 😁

CrazyDogLady87 · 03/07/2018 07:12

Now first thing first
You are beautiful we all are!!! You've already said you're legs are you best feature to flaunt them! A gorgeous pair of heels they don't have to be flashy or expensive, one of the pair's thay make my legs look best are a simple court shoes that cost me a tenner in new look!

That green tea dress is stunning! As long as you feel amazing in something you will ooze confidence and look fabulous. It's just finding the dress or outfit that makes you think yep this is it I look great. You already have a great sense of shapes that suit you so work with that.

I like you and many others live in jeans and vests so when you get dressed up you want to look effortless natural and god dam amazing. Try not to over think it. Go to local department store as them for a makeup demonstration. As for makeup You'll get your make up done cheaply. They will advise you in shades and techniques and just buy something on the lower price side like the lipstick so you can top uo thnight riugh the night.
You'll look amazing and have a fabulous time... don't forget pics!
