Summer hat for the large of head

Gusthetheatrecat · 01/07/2018 11:47

I have always had an enormous head. In the winter i can just about find hats by either buying a large ‘slouchy’ hat and wearing it like a skull cap, or in extremis by making my own and adjusting the pattern so it looks like a shopping bag.
But summer is hopeless. All summer hats sit redundantly on top of my head like a thimble. I cannot be alone! Has anyone found a good place for large summer hats? I dream of wearing something wide-brimmed and sophisticated!

I don't know how enormous we're talking here but I've always struggled getting hats big enough for my head. This year however, M&S hats in size 'M/L' seem to be really big. It's not on their website now cause I got it at the beginning of the season but I got a really nice straw fedora which is almost too big. I knew I was onto a winner when all the reviews were saying how large it was. If you click the "size guide" next to the product, it does show the measurements so you could check.

I am your sister. I have a 60cm head. I am also extremely pale so I have to wear a hat in the summer. I end up with a headache after a day squashed into the m/l sized m&s ones.

This year I bought an L fedora in the men’s section of M&S and it fits comfortably. It’s not the most fashionable but at least I’m covered.

TroubledLichen · 01/07/2018 19:46

Yes to hitting up the men’s section! I have the opposite problem and have to go to the kid’s department and like PPs I am also currently rocking a nice straw fedora but from the boy’s section of Gap Kid’s. It’s a flattering style and gender neutral so you shouldn’t have a problem finding one to fit.

I buy men's hats. More sizes, less bells and whistles. Simple straw trilby or panama. Often loads in charity shops - I lose mine so often, cheaper to pick one up there.

TacoFlavouredKisses · 01/07/2018 19:51

62cm here Blush I wear XXL men's panama hats in the summer!

Gah81 · 01/07/2018 21:28

I also buy men's panama hats. Work beautifully.

Hello fellow big headed people. One size doesn't fit all when it comes to hats. I've always struggled to get a nice hat for any season, even bobble hats look like dolls clothes on me Sad. Most men's hats I've seen are not very attractive. There is a definite gap in the market for large girly hats!

There so is drcoconut!

I am so glad to see this thread! I just bought myself a straw hat from Primark for in the garden when playing with the little one and it just sat on the top of my head! If I squash it on then the lovely round brim becomes all deformed. I shall be checking out some of these hats that people are recommending!

DunesOfSand · 02/07/2018 00:21

Large from MaxCap fits me. I still hate wearing hats, but at least it doesn't feel like a vise round my head.

Ineweverything · 02/07/2018 00:21

I got size L in H&M.

WaitrosePigeon · 02/07/2018 00:30

I have a football head. I got a nice floppy hat from Mountain Warehouse last week. It’s nice and fits.

BWrose · 02/07/2018 00:52

I bought a sunhat in tkmaxx back May. I like it and it fits. It's made from cotton and the label says 50 spf. I'm finding.it very heavy and my head sweats wearing it. For that reason I hate it. I bought my boyfriend a hat in mountain warehouse for our holidays. I'm now wearing it. 😀😎🤠

Chocolateporridge · 02/07/2018 09:47

@WaitrosePigeon what size is your head? I'm tempted by that Mountain Warehouse one but it says 58cm and I definitely need at least 60cm.
The other recommendations are a bit pricey for me!

WhereAreWeNow · 02/07/2018 14:53

I'm so pleased I'm not the only person with this problem! I just found one that fits ok in H&M (M/L size in ladies department) but I've previously found their hats to be too small and have gone for the men's department. I agree that M&S seem to be doing slightly bigger hats this year. I also saw some nice "universal size" panama hats at the shop in Kew Gardens which were really big but had an elastic band inside to make them fit different head sizes. Not much help if you're nowhere near Kew though and I haven't been able to find them online.

gnomeisland · 02/07/2018 15:01

I hear you! 61cm here, and just can't find anything for the summer. Oh, and very pale so really need to cover up.

I bought a big floppy wide brimmed straw hat that I convinced myself fitted, but in reality it's too tight.
In desperation I took the hat band out of it, and now it fits just fine!

I just don't understand why companies think us women all have such a small range of head sizes. You look at the men's sizing and it covers a much greater overall range. Grrrrrrr......

Men’s hats! Marks and Spencer’s hats! Fedoras! You’re all brilliant. Thank you.
(And also the lovely warm ‘these are my people’ feeling I had whilst I was reading the replies was amazing ....)
