How do I tan?

I burn if I don’t use protection. But I stay white if I use factor 30/50.

How can I develop a healthy bit of colour to my skin?

I have the same issue as you, but there is no such thing as a healthy bit of colour - all tanned skin is damaged skin. Fake tan all the way, there are some really good ones now.

Unless you’re skins used to tanning it takes longer for it to produce melanin, by then you’ve burnt. All natural tans will cause damage to the dna in your skin leading to aging, uv exposure causes 80% of aging according to dermatologists.

You’ll notice older people tan quickly if they’ve been tanning for years. I’m more like you. I’d burn, then still be white when it’s healed.

Oddly I’m trained in spray tans but I don’t do it for a living.

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 01/07/2018 16:42

Yeah I do know that tanning isn’t healthy, just more that ‘healthy’ looking glow rather than pasty white 😂

I work outside, in and out of water alot so fake tan has never really been practical.

I’ve been working outside for 8hrs a day, wearing factor 30 and I’m still the same colour as I was in December!

I used one of those pre-holiday lotions that stimulate melanin production once before going on holiday and went really brown. I think it was by gatineau. P20 gives me a nice glowy tan without ever burning

Paintbox · 01/07/2018 19:28

Op some people just don’t tan, sounds like you’re one of them

hendricksy · 01/07/2018 19:34

Try p20 , it's a game changer .. I was the same until is discovered it 25 years ago.

StopWhisperingStopShouting · 02/07/2018 06:33

Ah, P20! I forgot that existed!! I went to india in August years ago and disn’t burn once!
That was also the only time I had a bit of colour to me! I asumed it’d have been because I was in india.

I'm heading abroad shortly and have been using the Gatineau Tan Accelerator body lotion for the past week or so. Since we've had such fab weather here lately, I've also been out in the sun quite a bit and I've not burned and actually have tanned a bit already, so I'm putting it down to using that body lotion have to, given the price I intend to bring it with me on hols and use it as an aftersun every evening. When away I use SPF30 and re-apply regularly, I never trust the 'all day' suncreams.

specialsubject · 02/07/2018 11:23

there is no evidence that tan accelerators work. You've been suckered.

macnab · 02/07/2018 11:37

Maybe. But I've not burned at all which is unlike me. I've been out in the sun a few times without sunscreen (for example stopped to chat to someone and ended up waffling for ages while standing in boiling hot sun) so I'm putting it down to the lotion as otherwise I absolutely would have burned.

IllHaveTheSaladPlease · 02/07/2018 12:05

@hendricksy What is it about P20? I'm intersted!

tierraJ · 02/07/2018 12:41

I wear spf 30 in the sun & still tan but it takes up to 2 weeks!

hendricksy · 02/07/2018 13:36

@IllHaveTheSaladPlease .. no idea but I always always burnt as a child and teen even with sunblock and with this I don't only not burn but I tan . It let's uvb or uva through ( not sure which ) but blocks the other out . I'm never going to be a deep brown but I have a good colour and haven't burnt for 25 years.

IllHaveTheSaladPlease · 02/07/2018 16:12

@hendricksy sounds like it has been sent from the God's for people like us Halo

Bugjune · 02/07/2018 16:53

Some skins are just incapable of tanning. I don't particularly burn but weirdly I don't tan either - my skin just sort of reflects the sun's rays away, lol.

Roll on autumn.
