Allergy to Aveda Dry Shampoo / Color?

Hi All,

Last month I visited my hairdresser and she told me about Aveda's dry shampoo. She had a sample there and after she styled my hair she showed me how to apply the dry shampoo. That afternoon and all of the next day my scalp was itching. So I washed my hair and then didn't think anymore about it.

Then 3 weeks ago I went back in and she was coloring my roots and adding some highlights (also with Aveda products). My hair felt like it was on fire with the hair dye!! It was awful. I stuck it out for the duration, then she shampooed / styled me. When I got home, my head was super itchy and painful. I put oil on my scalp as directed by her, and basically kept it on for 2 days straight. This seemed to help. I believe I had a chemical burn. (no obvious bumps or scabs etc. and I didn't lose my hair).

Now just last weekend I used Aveda's dry shampoo on my own and within minutes my hair / scalp was itching like crazy. I shampooed my hair twice and 4 days later it's still itchy, but with no obvious bumps.
I'm in need of a root color job and I don't know what to do??!!!

Any suggestions? I believe I'm allergic to Aveda products, but don't know if I can get a root touch up at this point (with another product)...

Thanks for your advice or wisdom..

did she not do an allergy test before the hair dye?

Did you have an allergy test before dying your hair? Sounds like you are allergic and if you are your next reaction could be even worse so if I were you I’d get some advice from a Gp and not dye your hair again.
I’ve stopped dying my hair. It’s been a couple of years now. Funnily enough after I stopped, several of my friends did too. Nice not to have to deal with the roots.

I haven't tried Aveda dry shampoo but the other 2 brands of dry shampoo I've tried made my scalp itch like crazy.

Given your past experience, you'd be irresponsible to let them put colour on your hair again. And I doubt they would do so anyway when you tell them what happened last time.

I doubt you're allergic to every Aveda product, but it's possible you can be allergic to some. It's possible to be allergic to anything and everything!

No. It's actually the same dye that she's been using on me for quite a while now. Seems like it all sorta escalated after the usage of the dry shampoo....

I don't think I'm ready to go fully grey yet, so I feel like maybe they should skin test me first before I move on to a new product?

Thanks for all your help guys :) !! Have a wonderful day!!

I stopped dying mine after what I thought was an allergic reaction in the salon. It might have just been a panic attack though. But my scalp felt tight. You need to do a skin test 48 hours. If you aren’t able to dye, maybe you could have highlights that don’t touch the scalp.
