Are these shirts unflattering?

My lovely niece, soon to be 20, has asked for one of the Crew Clothing rugby shirts for her birthday, like this www.crewclothing.co.uk/classic-rugby-anniversary-wie058-navy/

I realise this sounds really horrible, but surely I should buy her something that is 'younger' and more stylish than one of these rugby shirts? I didn't think 19 year olds shopped in Crew, I thought it was for older women (not that there is anything wrong with that).

Should I go ahead with the present she originally asked for, or should I buy something else? Can these rugby shirts look nice in real life?

Personally i would not buy one for my daughter but she's only 8 Grin, its just too jolly hockey sticks and the logo looks huge. i've never seen any young people or anyone wear those tops.

it could be nice with denim mini shorts i suppose!

i do have a friend who wears the ralph lauren fitted polo tops, the ones with a couple of buttons and a little collar. she looks great in those, she's a booby beanpole though but even if she wasn't they are a much more flattering item.

If we all liked the same things Fluttery it would be boring.

Can you imagine how offended you’d be if your relative asked what you’d like for your birthday and then bought you something else because what you chose wasn’t to her personal taste?

I know, I feel bad for questioning, but I've only ever seen older ladies in these tops, not 19 year olds! Like you said flutteryleaves, it does look v. jolly hockey sticks and they don't look very flattering.

On the other hand, I love longchamp bags, keep buying them!

We are very close, and I wouldn't tell her I thought they were unflattering, I wouldn't want to upset her

No. When you are lovely and young rugby type shirts look amazing. Esp with tight jeans or short shorts you can wear at 19.
I lived in rugby shirts but with v big jean flares and thought i looked ammmmazzzin.

Its only now we are older we think we cant carry off an older style. Prob true. But you can be anything you want at 19

Yes, they are really unflattering and for 50 year olds. I just couldn’t. I know it is what she has asked for, but surely no one really likes them? I tend to buy keepsakes like jewellery. She will like that Nan-top for 5 minutes, she will keep jewellery forever.

These were all the rage when I was in sixth form about 15 years ago! I had a really nice pink one (I wonder what happened to it?)

If it’s what she’s asked for, and it’s in budget, why wouldn’t you get it for her?!

Okay, I've ordered it for her. I'm sure she will pull it off - I'd just heard bad things about rugby shirts in the past that put me off buying it e.g. Unflattering and ageing, I guess as a 19 year old, like many of you have said, she can pull anything off !

That's not necessarily true though. I don't have any of the jewellery I was given in my teens anymore.

Hmm at the idea that you wouldn't buy her something she wanted, for fear it would be 'unflattering'.
Whenever will we get past this idea that women should only wear clothes that make them look acceptable/attractive to other people...
I hope she never finds out that you are critical of her appearance and choices.
