Ashy colour hair suggestions

Apparently I'm a deep summer so would suit ashy hair but I can't find any examples I like. All the pics seem a bit blah unless you have highlights or something but the only time I tried blonde my hair went an odd straw colour which changed colour quite quickly (that could have been the hairdresser though). My husband laughed when I suggested blonde!

I'm getting my hair coloured next week. I wanted pin up or dark cherry red which I'd dye brown when the upkeep got too much but I know the red would still show through the brown and prevent me getting a cooller brown.

Any ideas? I want to give the HOC stuff a chance but I also want a big change.

My hair isn't dyed currently and is mainly grey/white. I have blue/grey eyes and pale uneven skin. My hair is just below chin length and I'm 41.

I saw a lovely shade on Pinterest called mushroom brown, not sure how that would be to recolour yourself though

That is quite nice. It looks like lots of different colours put together (she says trying to sound like she knows stuff about hair!). I think it would blend OKish with my salt and pepper.

I wouldn't be able to get that after red though would I? I'm not set on the red but I'd quite like to give it a go. I want something "big" if you see what I mean?

I wouldn't be doing it myself. It would be my hairdresser. :)

I’ve had my hair dark red once and it did fade despite me doing everything I should have.
I’d get a couple of pics of colours you like then speak to your hairdresser about what would suit you best and which colour would be easier to keep.

Meant to also say - when I had my hair dark red I had to slightly change my make up (when working) as it changed my complexion. Bear that in mind too
