Gaudy Dinner: What to wear

So dress code for men is black tie OR lounge suit. September so possibly still warmish. I don't do black, pastel, shiny, frilly or knee-showing. I am a 16, 14 in some shops, hourglass, 5ft 9. I know from previous experience that academics can turn up in all sorts, but obviously there will be lots of civilians at this and I'm not quite sure of where I should be pitching the 'dressed up' level.

OK, so the Issa dress has just been reduced to £39 so I have to give it a go, have ordered in the melon (hope it's not too pale) in two sizes. Lorelai, I will alter the sleeves if necessary.

Agree with white marble. Bellow the knee cocktail dress is the way to go.

That Issa dress is lovely. Great choice.

Just avoid a pale lemon frock with incongruous muslin frills.
(Sorry, another Sayers fan who can't resist referring to the book!)

(agree Issa dress is great btw)

In case anyone is remotely interested the Issa dress is unfortunately a no. Fantastic colour (definitely not pale), great length but the material is very odd and shiny, it arrived looking like a dishrag and I felt it made my stomach look big when it's not really a problem area. I have tried a (sale) Coast dress in an orangey-red which I do like - not perfect, but I am very fussy! It is pretty bright though, definitely not a 'fade into the background and pretend you're not really here' colour, although demure in cut. I just hope I'm feeling the vibe on the day - I kind of feel I need a navy 'safe' option instead (as well???).

Ah shame about the Issa.

What about this?

Bare arms, lace and frills are all total no no's unfortunately!
