Style changes you've made with age..

Interested to know the little ways that people have changed their style as they've got older, and wiser. I do my best to only buy/wear natural fibers - not only do the clothes look nicer, they wear better too.

I just saw those Lush Harem pants on another thread - they do look amazing. Will have a look at Forgotten Tribes too - thanks!

Floisme · 09/06/2018 09:19

I think the most conservative I have ever been in my style was in my late 20s, when I became fixated on 'dressing like a grown up'; and again in my early 50s. Both times I snapped out of it, although not before making some ill advised - and not inexpensive - choices.

At 61 I'm less self conscious than I've ever been. Invisibility can be very freeing. I still like a bit of fast fashion.

There have been several times when I've thought I'd worked out what suited me. It's never lasted because my body doesn't stay the same.

KittyB52 · 09/06/2018 09:23

I was pear shaped, and struggled to find anything much in the shops. Weight gain and perimenopause have given me a thicker waist, and I am now a WAHM so don't need 'work clothes' as such. So I might as well go for what I like rather than what is supposed to suit.

Floisme · 09/06/2018 09:33

I have come round to the view that what suits you is about personality just as much as body shape.

Destinysdaughter · 09/06/2018 09:39

Stopped wearing black as got my colours done and realised it really didn't suit me. I wear lots of flattering colours now! 😀

photoroseframe · 09/06/2018 10:50

i no longer wear boho/ floaty things. peasant tops, denim miniskirts and tan gladiator sandals worked for me when i was a scrawny rake but stopped working with my post 2 dc shape and extra weight.

i wear a limited palette of blue, navy and white. its fresh looking

i know that strappy tops dont suit me as they highlight my lack of breast.

i've worked out that i need low key looks and greys and camels make me too washed out.

SoyYo · 09/06/2018 12:14

I’m mid fifties and I’m having a lot of fun with fashion as I now have the disposable income I didn’t when bringing up young DC.
No rules, except do I feel good?

cheapskatemum · 09/06/2018 12:42

Stopped colouring my hair and loving the white locks framing my face.

All natural fibres - loathe that you have to look hard to find "polyester cotton" on care labels, especially as it means I now have to get my reading glasses out!

Only wear a fashion trend if it suits my shape, not just because it's the fashion. In my teenage years and early 20s I felt compelled to buy styles and colours that I wouldn't be seen dead in now.

Motoko · 09/06/2018 13:05

Kitty have you tried Joe Browns? They do the boho/hippy look.

I'm 54 and an old goth, but I've recently ditched the black and dark colours, for bright colours and patterns, bright pinks, yellows, turquoise, orange etc. I'm having a lot of fun seeking out new clothes. My last two buys were pink cropped jeans from Joe Browns, and yellow flat slingbacks from H&M.

I stopped wearing make up for years, but started wearing it again sometimes, and also painting my nails.

I want to get my ears re-pierced as the holes closed up, so I can wear earrings again.

I've been very inspired by women like Sarah Jane Adams. She hasn't let age stop her wearing things that people would consider for young people and she looks fantastic.
I also love seeing all the women on the Advanced Style blog, some are very eccentric and rather over the top, but I love that they're not conforming to how society thinks women should look once they get to a certain age. I've always been alternative, so it's good to see that it doesn't have to stop as you get older.

KittyB52 · 09/06/2018 14:32

Motoko, I have seen a few things from Joe Browns, but often it’s a bit overembellished for my taste. Same with Monsoon. I love the style/shape of a garment, but I don’t always want it with embroidery or sequins. Yes, I know I am being picky. Grin

I like quite a few bits from Anthropologie, but they are way out of my budget.

H&M LOGG used to do some great boho stuff years ago. I can get the occasional bit from Esprit too.

Motoko · 09/06/2018 16:05

What about Gudrun Sjödén? They're quite expensive though, and I'm not sure if their look is what you're looking for either, but it is hippyish with the layering.

Motoko · 09/06/2018 16:58

Or, a site I'd not of heard of until I saw it mentioned in another thread today, Desigual. They're also not cheap (tops are around £40/£50) but they've got some boho/hippyish things, and all their items are different from what you would get on the high street, so worth the extra I think.

I've seen some things on there that I want to get! The poster that mentioned them, also said you can buy previous seasons of theirs on Amazon too.

BagelGoesWalking · 09/06/2018 18:04

Had a look for Desigual on eBay - lots of things, especially dresses available. Does anyone have an about their sizing. I presume size 12 would be medium.

teta · 09/06/2018 18:25

Kitty H&M still have a fair bit of boho tops online. I have bought about 6 blouses this year in cotton/linen in blue/white & cream. I used to buy a lot of Monsoon too but it’s all gone a bit fussy for me.

CountFosco · 09/06/2018 20:31

I want to get my ears re-pierced as the holes closed up, so I can wear earrings again.

I have 3 holes in one of my ears, didn't wear any earrings in them for 20 years. Now I'm approaching 50 I'm wearing earrings in those holes again.

LightAsTheBreeze · 09/06/2018 20:49

I rarely wear black now and definitely not next to my face
I keep my saggy knees covered
Likewise tops of arms.
My waist seems to have disappeared and anything waisted makes me look like a sack of spuds
It’s all quite sad really, I’m 60, tall and reasonably slim but just look generally saggy

KittyB52 · 10/06/2018 07:30

CountFosco I have multiple holes in my ears and while I can’t get earrings through them (I have tried but I am a wuss and it makes me feel queasy) the holes are not fully healed. I can get earrings through the top holes and bottom ones only.

greenberet · 10/06/2018 10:24

Interesting thread - can we have some more ages to go with the comments please _ I'm 53 trying to work out where I want to be - overall I want simplicity - too many clothes - too much stuff generally - but on the other hand I like fashion! And don't want to become too streamlined.

Saw a lady yesterday hard to gage her age but could have been 60-70 short grey hair - red vest top - multicoloured hareem trousers - natural tan - red nails red framed glasses funky jewellery - she looked fab - don't think it was her clothes but more her attitude - just completely knew who she was - was in a pretty arty area though so may have looked out of place elsewhere

Verbena37 · 10/06/2018 13:32

I’ve lost most of the style I had Grin....and I never had that much to begin with.

I have basically decided not to care as much about worrying what people think.

I need to find my style.....it’s currently quite a ‘lives in jeans and basic tops’ mumsy look. But unless I lose a significant amount of weight, beautiful clothes don’t look good on me.

Verbena37 · 10/06/2018 13:33

Oh and I’m 40.

Where2live · 10/06/2018 13:35

Less fashionable clothes but better fabrics, fewer patterns, styles that are cut to flatter my 'figure' (such as it is) and colours that flatter my colouring. It's all about flattering me now.

I do sometimes see a pair of plaid trousers and think ''I love them'' and then I think hmmm, am I too old to wear plaid trousers Sad

Where2live · 10/06/2018 13:40

ps, also, you find your own ''classic'' and endless you tube tutorials or fashion bloggers telling me that camel and beige and cream and ecru are classic colours doesn't make it so for me

My classic is navy, dark bottle green, dark maroon. White makes me look like death so for me a classic white shirt is quite risky and not classic at all so, I've learnt that listening to other people's opinions on what is supposedly classic or capsule is a waste of time.

Like @floisme though, even though I think I'm ignoring fashion, my style is always evolving so I'm not completely ignoring it.

halfwitpicker · 10/06/2018 13:48

I'm another one who still loves black and wears it often.

I also get 'dressed up' for work lots, even though its not a corporate environment I like wearing pencil skirts and heels because its such a contrast to how I spend weekends I. E. Jeans/shorts/t-shirts. Someone people seem to look at me like Hmm but I am past giving a shit about what other people think.

Floisme · 10/06/2018 13:56

I agree about finding your own classics / neutrals. Mine are dark grey, burgundy, some greens, very dark brown. Navy not so much unless it's exactly the right shade. Funnily enough, I hadn't worn black near my face for 20 years but Iately I've been getting into it again - not shiny 'new' black but the faded, washed out shade. It still looks quite severe but I'm quite liking that look at the moment. White still looks dreadful.

DameDoom · 10/06/2018 13:57

I am back in black at almost 47 - it looked awful in my 30's but looks fab now. Don't dismiss it completely before you've given it another go.
It has to be good black though and fantastic fabrics - none of your Next work wear black.
