Style changes you've made with age..

Interested to know the little ways that people have changed their style as they've got older, and wiser. I do my best to only buy/wear natural fibers - not only do the clothes look nicer, they wear better too.

I stick with what suits me now-which is paired back and minimal-and buy the best I can afford.
Much more minimal make-up but a bit of red lipstick on occasion.
Spend loads on skincare and hair cuts. I used to do botox and fillers but they stopped looking natural so I am now embracing the odd wrinkle wholeheartedly.

BlueEyedWonder · 06/06/2018 22:46

Buy better buy less
Buy natural fibres - wool, cotton, cashmere, silk
Classics rather than high fashion
Neutrals / muted colours - I don’t get bored of them so quickly
Lower hem lines on skirts / dresses - Not keen on my knees

tiptowin · 07/06/2018 08:37

100% agree with those who have said jewellery too. I used to LOVE a chunky necklace or bigger earrings but now I only wear a few, good quality pieces.

Totally agree about the jewellery.

I've relegated all the cheap tat to a shoe box under the bed and I only wear more delicate gold and silver pieces now. In fact, moving more to the yellow gold these days.

Time to throw out the old stuff or take it to the charity shop, I think.

I ditched the black (on my top half) in my thirties and hate to see older women wearing it. It makes me sad.

Also I buy clothes in the right size - I used to be one for sizing up as I thought baggy = flattering. It really doesn't. I'm an apple but mire fitted skater dresses can look great and accentuate the waist I never realised I had.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 07/06/2018 11:09

No black
Better skin care (all over my body) to stay moisturised.

Paintbox · 07/06/2018 11:22

dontcallme why does it make you sad to see older women wearing black? Maybe it suits them and maybe if it doesn’t then they don’t care they just like it. It’s a bit patronising to say someone’s clothing choices make you sad

UnSub · 07/06/2018 11:25

Elasticated waistbands.. ahhhGrin

LanaorAna2 · 07/06/2018 11:25
  1. No soap, use oil cleansers all over. Takes years off your skin, you get the glow back.
  2. Pricy clothes, but always with a flash of fast fashion however tiny so you don't look staid or wifey. I love my Primark ring.
  3. Deranged hair tied back, enough frizz ease to drown a hamster.
  4. Absolutely no Jigsaw or Hobbs even tho I love them - the labels read SMUG MIDDLE AGED to me.
  5. Reading Net a Porter to get your eye in.

I'm in my mid 30s.
Off the top of my head...

I buy a decent bra.

I hardly ever wear black.

I have a skincare routine.

I think I probably wear more makeup now, but I'm better at it.

I wear very minimal jewellery- just my wedding rings and a bracelet or a necklace.

My nails are usually done.

I keep my hair regularly trimmed.

Fashion wise, I still wear shorts, skirts and dresses above the knee, skinny jeans etc. I've read threads here where people have ditched those after 35!

I'm a bit of a slave to trends though and wish I wasn't. E.g. I'm wearing/buying stripes at the moment, just because they're 'in' and other mums that I follow are doing the same Blush
I do love them though Grin

FormerlyFrikadela01 · 07/06/2018 11:41

I wear more makeup and am more adventurous with it.

I'm more adventurous with my clothes and wear more what I feel comfortable and confident in rather than what's in fashion.

I basically stopped caring what other people think and do what I like now rather than what I think other people would do.

Although I do agree with others that my skincare is very important to me now.

madmomma · 07/06/2018 12:07

Lana what body cleanser do you use pls?

LanaorAna2 · 07/06/2018 13:15

Dermol or E45. You don't need bubbles to get clean.

Jozxyqk · 07/06/2018 13:31

Am late 30s.
Skincare. It's my biggest personal expense.
Natural fabrics, & a smaller wardrobe generally. Know what suits me. I don't wear black near my face.
Ditched all the costume jewellery a few years ago. Silver or white gold now, with pearls or stones I like. Subtle pieces, mostly.
No nail art. Wear nothing or occasionally, a clear or pale pink polish. Always neat though, no chips allowed. Am lucky I have naturally good nails.
Minimal makeup, no foundation. Takes 5 minutes if I do everything, which I rarely do. Usually just mascara & lipstick, maybe blusher. (Am v. pale.)

Sortofcool · 07/06/2018 15:37

Buy less but better quality clothes.
No logos, pictures, cute animals etc on any clothes.
No cleavage on show. Tops of arms covered.
Less makeup seems to be also look less ageing.
Simple jewellery - no statement necklackes etc just a couple of bracelets which I alternate and a few nice pairs of stud earrings.

Natural fabrics especially for tops and shirts.
No whacky haircuts or colours.

Sortofcool · 07/06/2018 15:38

Oops forgot my age -57

BestIsWest · 07/06/2018 15:52

Contrary to popular advice, I’ve gone darker. Had blonde highlights for 30 years but when I was 50 went back to my natural colour ( ashy brown). I also went short around the same time. It’s marvellous. Am contemplating letting the grey through and going even shorter in the next few years.

This has meant a change in the colours that I wear. I can’t wear red any more or olive green both of which really suited me before.

I try and buy less but better quality and I’ve realised that I am happiest in jeans and a good wool sweater and trainers or ankle boots so I spend my money on those things.

I will never wear heels again so embrace lovely flats.

New job has a more casual dress code ( clothes must be clean with no holes) so I am gradually running down my office wear and changing over to smart jeans.

RaininSummer · 07/06/2018 15:56

Does swapping lovely matching Charnos type undies for supermarket Bridget Jones pants and mismatched bras count?

GobblersKnob · 07/06/2018 16:11

Stopped caring about what other people think, dress entirely to please myself. Let my grey grow in and love it very much.

StaySafe · 07/06/2018 16:16

Wear more fitted clothes, it has taken me all m adult life to learn baggy stuff just doesn't suit me. Trying to buy less but better quality, though sometimes less expensive can be good quality too.
Now I'm thinner and fitter I can wear high heels again, so sometimes do. I now wear good quality nice leisure stuff at home, and not centuries old baggy track suits etc.

CountFosco · 07/06/2018 17:13

I'm in my late 40s. Like a PP I dress younger now than I did in my 30s when I was still trying to be a grown up. Wearing mini skirts again after not wearing them since the 90s and wondering why I ever stopped! And now I'm through the baby years I can spend money and time on myself. I now exercise everyday and love my body and what it can do.

DontCallMeCharlotte · 07/06/2018 17:19

Paintbox That's a fair comment although I didn't mean to be patronising. I'm not sure I can explain it but I'll try. For example, my slim colleague nearly always wears black because she thinks it makes her look slim. She is slim but not because she wears black. On the rare occasions she wears anything lighter - even navy - it lights her up and she looks even more amazing. That's what makes me sad. But just because it does I accept it doesn't make me right. It's only my opinion. And pretty much everything I wear from the waist down is black.

Amazing how many people say they've ditched the black!
