H & M sizing changing (apparently)

I was in H & M earlier with DD exchanging the shorts that I'd bought her the other day without her with me. She's 11 but tall (5'4) and thin as a rail.

I'd bought her the age 12-13 which were tiny so returned them today and she tried on an age 13-14. Still tiny, so she tries on age 14+ which she can't even do up.

So we go downstairs to the adult dept and try on a size 6. Can't even do them up. DD now asks me if she's getting fat. Absolutely not, I tell her the sizing is ridiculous. So she tries on a size 8 and they're massive on her so she settles for a skirt instead (in a size 4). What the actual fuck?

I had a wee gripe about the sizing with the very lovely sales assistant who completely agreed and told me that the new season garments will all be resized so that current size 10 is an 8 etc etc. This is the first time I've shopped in H & M for DD but I reckon it'll be the last if the sizing is so fucked up that an 11 year old kid who runs for county reckons she's getting fat. I hope it's true and they're at least making an effort to stop this ridiculous nonsense.

I don't know if it's changing but their sizing is shite at the moment

falang · 30/05/2018 16:44

I don't shop there anymore. Not since I bought a size 16 jacket (not a fitted jacket) without trying it on, got it home to find I couldn't even get my arms in it. It fitted my size 8 daughter perfectly. I returned it and the shop assistant agreed their sizes were all over the place and ridiculous.

rightknockered · 30/05/2018 16:45

I don't see what difference it will make if all they're changing is the label. The sizing is ridiculous

WilburIsSomePig · 30/05/2018 16:46

The age 13-14 shorts looked like they'd fit an 8 year old. No wonder girls get so fucked up about their weight when shops do this.

H&M sizing has always aye been all over the place since I was a teen 20years ago.

MayFayner · 30/05/2018 16:48

H&M sizing has always been all over the place.

I think it's because they get garments from so many different suppliers.

WilburIsSomePig · 30/05/2018 16:48

DH bought me a size 14 dress in there a couple of months ago and it was like a tent. Tried to change it for the 12 and I couldn't even get it past my waist when I tried it on. There is absolutely no structure to their sizing.

Last time I went in there I tried to try a lovely top on.

The XXL was far too small.
Im a size 12 Hmm its ridiculous, I dont even bother going in because theres just no consistency with the sizes.

WilburIsSomePig · 30/05/2018 16:51

The XXL was far too small.
Im a size 12

FFS, doesn't do much for the confidence does it. I won't be going back.

The sizing for mens clothes is surprisingly consistent though. My eldest ds gest a lot of his clothes from there and never even needs to try on

StormTreader · 30/05/2018 16:55

I've heard that where the clothes get made in sweatshops abroad, they apparently often cut the cloth shapes in big stacks - it can slide while cutting so the one at the top may be a very different size from the one at the bottom.
Sometimes two "identical" items in the same size can have one fit and the other not.

SleepingInYourFlowerbed · 30/05/2018 16:55

I shop there a lot but just make sure I try lots on. It would be nice for them to become consistent

cantkeepawayforever · 30/05/2018 16:57

It has had my slim dancer daughter in tears for exactly the same reasons.

She now buys clothes, particularly trousers, in TopShop because they give actual body measurements on the labels and seem roughly consistent across both the same and different styles.

cantkeepawayforever · 30/05/2018 16:58

Conversely, my extremely long, skinny son can't buy from their men's ranges at all because they do not make trousers etc long and slim enough!

foxtiger · 30/05/2018 17:57

I usually take size 18 and I find that in H&M I need at least size 22 (which they don't often stock) in anything that comes in individual sizes, but in anything that just comes in S M L etc, the L is plenty big enough, when I would expect to take an XL in most shops. It just doesn't make sense.

teta · 30/05/2018 18:21

I love H&M for their cotton and linen tops and night wear. I’m a 14 in most shops. In H&M I’m a medium in tops and nightwear.A size 14 in the loose fitting kaftan type blouses.A 16 in the ones with slim sleeves, a 16 in the yellow crinkle dress and I don’t fit into the 16 in the fitted bodice long cotton dress.

EmmaC78 · 30/05/2018 18:24

I don't shop there anymore. I am a 10 or 12 in most shops and Can't even fit into a 16 in h and m.

Undercoverbanana · 30/05/2018 18:25

No no no!!! Don’t change the sizing. It’s the only high street shop where I know what size I am!!!!!

Floisme · 30/05/2018 18:30

Their sizing is all over the place, always has been. I can be anything from an 8 to a 16 there. As other posters have said, I assume it's due to to over extended supply chains and lack of quality control. I wouldn't get upset about it but I would never order from them online and it does make me wonder how on earth they manage to enforce their ethical policies.

PugwallsSummer · 31/05/2018 16:29

I tried a skirt on in an 8 and a 10. The 10 was twice as tight as the 8. Very random sizing.

FriendlyOcelot · 31/05/2018 16:36

I ordered a pair of trousers recently which had legs of around 35” length and a waist that my beanpole 12 year old daughter couldn’t do up. Made for Barbie, clearly!

MadgeMak · 31/05/2018 16:36

Their sizing is all over the place. I'm usually a 10, sometimes a 12 if it's something more fitted, and I had to buy size 14 skinny jeans. More recently I bought some linen khaki trousers and had to get an 8!

FriendlyOcelot · 31/05/2018 16:36

Oh and they were a woman’s size 10, which I normally am in H&M. Bonkers.

nancy75 · 31/05/2018 16:40

I bought my Dd a size 8 jacket which is a bit big & a size 16 pair of shorts which are a bit tight! She is straight up & down ( not old enough to be pear shaped yet) she tried on a different style of shorts & we couldn’t find a pair small enough (8 fell off her) totally ridiculous

BougieCoconut · 31/05/2018 16:41

H&M sizes are mad. I’m sure someone’ll be along in a moment to tell us about vanity sizing and how everyone is so obese nowadays etc though Grin
