Wedding outfit help desperately needed

Iloatheshopping · 30/05/2018 12:51

I have a wedding to go to shortly and it will be my first since the 90s and as an adult so I have no idea what to wear. I am limited to budget, have sensory issues and I am overweight/odd sizing so I find shopping for clothes a nightmare. It doesn't have to be massively fancy and I would prefer to not stand out (blending into the background is fine), just something simple and comfortable.

I was thinking of wearing the black dress I wore to my graduation with a colourful/smart kimono type jacket or I could possibly get the same dress in a royal blue with a black pointelle type cardigan for over the top.

Does this sound passable? Or can anyone help me find a fine kimono/cardigan type jacket pref past the bum for around £30 max? I can only find really bright or short kimonos or heavier cardigans. (Need to have something to cover me can't do without)

I'm not sure if the photos will upload but these are what I could find so far and my black dress is the same as the blue one.

I think I would step away from the black if I were you. I think it would make for a rather "miserable" outfit, although the kimono is lovely. And definitely not the cardigan.

Could you find a brighter kimono perhaps?

DontCallMeCharlotte · 30/05/2018 13:00

Ah. Sorry, I've just seen what you said about "bright" kimonos and not wanting to stand out!

Okay then, the kimono you've chosen but with the blue dress.

I'll get back under my rock now Blush

Iloatheshopping · 30/05/2018 13:13

I think you have summed it up perfectly with the 'miserable' outfit Blush I have body confidence issues and it's a wedding I have to go to and can't say no to so it's clouding my judgement.

I will definitely stay away from the cardigan, it was a last ditch effort to find something to wear. I just couldnt find anything that I would be comfortable in or that would be smart enough for a wedding. I have seen a few lovely kimonos I would happily wear but they are all bright/summery/tropical ones but I wasn't sure they would be appropriate for a wedding. I am happy to find a brighter one as long as its wedding appropriate :)

This could be worth a look, it's a little bit different but doesn't scream look at me

CurlsLDN · 30/05/2018 16:48

Id say you would stand out in black, whereas in a summery colour you'd blend right in with every other summery, floral, colourful outfit there!
I think the blue dress and blue kimono you've picked look great. The cardigan is not usual wedding attire, so would possibly draw attention in a way you might not like. If you would be more comfortable in the pointelle knit fabric, however, cream or another light colour would look ok. But I think the kimono is the best choice!

CurlsLDN · 30/05/2018 16:49

PS, have a nose through friends Facebook albums from last summer, and look at what the other guests were wearing that way for a realistic picture of what sort of thing is usual.

alc3254 · 30/05/2018 16:51

Next online have a few kimono jackets that might suit

LaCerbiatta · 30/05/2018 16:54

Absolutely nothing miserable about black!

Iloatheshopping · 30/05/2018 21:29

Thanks Goose, it is a lovely dress but sadly I wouldn't be able to pull it off.

Thanks for the help, I am going to have one last trawl through the internet to see if anything else jumps out and if not I will order the blue dress/kimono. I hadn't even thought to put the two together so I'm glad I asked :)

Just an update, I have ordered the blue dress but I still need something to go over it. I decided against both of the ones pictured in the end.

I have found this kimono, would it go together with the dress?
I'm going to keep looking but I have to order today.
Or if anyone could suggest anything else I'd be very grateful.

I'm not very good when trying to work out what goes together and I stick to boring simple plain colours usually. I don't have anyone I can ask in rl either hence needing the help.

Could you go for a loose longline jacket instead of a kimono ?

JennyHolzersGhost · 02/06/2018 19:12

What will you be having for heels, hat/fascinator, bag? That would help pick a jacket which would work with what you’ve got.
I like the blue dress, it’s a good base for a lot of looks.

JennyHolzersGhost · 02/06/2018 19:14

Something like this perhaps ? What’s your budget ?

Iloatheshopping · 02/06/2018 20:06

Yes a loose longline jacket would also be ok as long as it's not really stiff fabric. I had found one but it wasn't long enough.

Ive got black flat sandals as I can't wear heels and I have the option of either a silver or black clutch bag.

OP posts:
Iloatheshopping · 02/06/2018 20:07

I love the jacket but slightly out of my price range as I have £30 max.

OP posts:
JennyHolzersGhost · 02/06/2018 20:10

There are some loose longline suit jackets on ASOS for less, if any of those work ?
I’d go with black bag if you’re doing black sandals. If you go for a non black jacket then maybe go for chunky black earrings or necklace to tie it all in ? Am assuming you’re not doing hat / fascinator

Iloatheshopping · 02/06/2018 20:36

I will take a look, thank you.

I had seen one in next as well but wasn't sure on length so I'm going to have a closer look. Most normal sized clothing comes up too short or falls funny as I'm a funny shape at the minute, my bottom half is really out of proportion due to weight and back/hip problems mean my bottom also sticks out further than it should at an angle. I feel really self conscious about it but if I have something to cover my back past my bum you can't notice it as much.

OP posts:
Iloatheshopping · 02/06/2018 20:39

Also thank you and I will go for my black bag.

I'm not planning on wearing a hat or a fascinator at the moment.

OP posts:
Iloatheshopping · 02/06/2018 21:30

Would either of these styles go with the dress?

Personally I wouldn’t wear a long black jacket to a summer wedding I’m afraid. Sorry !

Iloatheshopping · 02/06/2018 21:54

Ok thank you. Sorry I'm so cluelessBlush. Thankfully this is the first and last wedding for a very long time. I don't think I'm cut out for this.

JennyHolzersGhost · 02/06/2018 22:03

Something like this ? Neutral enough to work with blue and black at a summer wedding and I think long enough and drapey enough for you ?

www.boohoo.com/plus-katie-duster-jacket/PZZ85673.html?color=165

JennyHolzersGhost · 02/06/2018 22:06

Or this which is similarly loose and drapey - some people aren’t keen on waterfall but depends what you think -

Iloatheshopping · 02/06/2018 22:15

They look good, thank you. I think i prefer the second.
