I’m going to blow your mind - teeth stains

So I’ve been really ill the last few days. Looked in the mirror this morning and I look shockingly bad. I’m due a trip to the hygienist in a months time but my teeth were looking a little stained in places( even though I stick to herbal tea nowadays) and I was all ugh about it.

I was pondering whether I should dig out my Colgate whitening strips when i suddenly thought of my magic eraser that gets rid of every stain in the house. I decided to google using it on your teeth and people actually do it so I thought I’d give it a go. I tore off a tiny bit, wet it and clamped inbetween some tweezers and incredibly lightly just brushed it over the stained areas. I swear the stains just came right off. How mad is that!! I’m not saying anyone should go mad with it and rub away their enamel but honestly it’s worked better in three servings than anyone of the toothpastes that threaten to remove stains (and don’t).

It blows my mind that anyone would be daft enough to even think about this.

phoenixtherabbit · 30/05/2018 11:43

oh my god why would you even consider putting this in your mouth?

I imagine it is not dissimilar to putting neat bleach on your teeth!

Roomba · 30/05/2018 11:45

Grinding the enamel off your teeth may well make them whiter (short term), but I cannot imagine it is a good idea!

Urgh. Reminds me of when my mother used Jif (now cif) on her teeth she was very proud of the results until I showed her the label on the bottle saying do not use on enamel baths HmmGrin

Jesus.

picklemepopcorn · 30/05/2018 12:24

Brilliant! I'll give it a go...

ILikeyourHairyHands · 30/05/2018 12:26

Surely it's just a slight abrasive though? They're not chemical. When you go and see the hygienist they use abrasives to remove stains.

It's not as though OP bleached herself!

whattheactualbleep · 30/05/2018 12:27

I've whitened my teeth with worse things than a magic eraserWink

I take it everyone making snarky comments here have never used baby wipes, wet wipes or any type of artificial sweeteners which actually penetrate the skin or absorb into the bowel (sweeteners)

Fromage · 30/05/2018 12:32

omg I've just read the link - why aren't all toothbrushes made of this stuff?!

The OP's link says there's less scratching on the tooth than produced by normal toothbrushing.

I'm happy someone was 'daft enough' Hmm to think of this. I think I'll buy a magic eraser and give it a go.

SleepFreeZone · 30/05/2018 12:34

That’s the point they aren’t chemical at all. Well the one I have isn’t. It’s just a foam sponge that cleans using very fine dermabrasion which seems to be a lot kinder to teeth than the abrasive toothpastes that are out there according to that PubMed article. Plus it actually works which is a bonus.

Student dentist here. Please, please DO NOT do stuff like this!

ScreenQueen · 30/05/2018 12:38

Prophy Paste (professional tooth polishing paste used in dental hygienist appointments) is available on Amazon. I've used it and can confirm the outrageously positive reviews. Should only be used every 3 month or so to reduce risk to enamel...using more often or on "soft" teeth can massively increase decay risk. You have been warned.

PlateOfBiscuits · 30/05/2018 12:41

But why catlovingdoctor?

BubbleBlowingBaby · 30/05/2018 12:48

Why not catloving? Seems that any thread where a professional usually charges big bucks to fix things, like hairdressers, any cheap alternative is doomed as deadly/will ruin you etc with no actual, scientific reasons.

Frenchiemamax · 30/05/2018 12:53

Please, please DO NOT do stuff like this!

... because you're putting dentists out of business Grin

mando12345 · 30/05/2018 12:56

Well I scratched my stainless job to buggery using the magic eraser very gently so be warned!

InsomniacAnonymous · 30/05/2018 12:56

I love those magic eraser sponges, but I've never used it for cleaning my teeth. I buy them from an Amazon Marketplace seller which is in China and they are so cheap that I've got a big bag of dozens of them in my cupboard. Just search for melamine sponges on Amazon. You'll see a huge difference in prices, so it'll take a while to spot the best deal but it's worth it as they are so effective at cleaning.

Mountainsoutofmolehills · 30/05/2018 12:56

which magic eraser?

Doingreat · 30/05/2018 12:57

Ta OP. Consider my mind blown

I'd rather live with my stained teeth than try this tip. At least that way I may actually live.

phoenixtherabbit · 30/05/2018 12:58

I apologise! I assumed they were chemical!

NameyMcNamechangeface · 30/05/2018 12:59

Can a dentist enlighten us as to why it's such a bad idea?

LionAllMessy · 30/05/2018 13:00

I just get a proper clean done by the dentist once a year. Removes all those stains and doesn't cost much

TeatimeForTheSoul · 30/05/2018 13:00

SleepFreeZone I’m bowing down in homage to your PubMed link, the first I’ve seen on Mumsnet Grin , though that may reflect on the threads I tend to read Grin
