Sandals and bare legs are too informal, so nude tights with what kind of shoes? Will it have to be heels/courts?

Depends on the skirt or dress. I wear anything from comfy - heels or brogues. Slip ons and ballet pumps are bad for your back though.

And nude tights (or knee highs under trousers).

I've been wearing a lot of loafers and even a pair of brown boat shoes with a black dress last Friday.

There are also quite a few nice closed-toe sandals with short chunky heels around (ie. under an inch). I got a nice pair in Zara the other day that had a black cap toe and looked a lot like the Chanel sling-backs all the fashionistas were wearing last year.

I lived in ballet pumps until my back went again - my osteopath and podiatrist both told me off for not wearing for 'proper' shoes (ie something that holds the feet).

yes, ballet flats have no cushioning, make you waddle, fall off at the least provocation and bugger up feet and back.

so they are crap and look crap.
