Tall good quality non-frumpy dresses

peonylover22 · 23/05/2018 14:31

Does anyone have any recommendations for where to buy good quality dresses for tall women?
I am so fed up of waists around my rib cage and indecently short hems.
I am looking for tall dresses that are stylish and good quality. Do they exist? Many tall ranges are made from very cheap man-made fabrics or a bit frumpy...
I like Whistles, Jigsaw and LK Bennett and looking for similar style and price point.
I am looking to get a couple of casual dresses for summer and a couple of smart dresses for the office.
Any ideas?

Sadly no ideas, but I search for these every summer, so interested to know if anyone has any suggestions. I struggle to find dresses that hit my waist in the right place so usually end up with an empire line style, provided its not too gathered at the front. I have bought this from White Company, and it is very nice on, if a little see-through. I usually avoid linen as it gets too crumpled, but I'm hoping the stripes will detract from that.

Also interested! I’m 5ft 10 and really struggle to dress for work in summer as dresses are so short on me. They look fine in winter with tights, but silly without!

chapthedoor · 23/05/2018 19:03

I tried in a seasalt dress that was below the knee on me (I'm 5ft 8) so they might be worth a try ?

TerfsUp · 23/05/2018 19:12

Long Tall Sally.

stringbean · 24/05/2018 08:16

Just had a thought about Toast op - have you looked there? The dresses are certainly long enough, plain rather than patterned (which I prefer) and usually cotton/linen - just depends if it's your style or not.

Shantotto · 24/05/2018 08:20

Have a dig through Long Tall Sally, some not great but you can find some good stuff! For non 'grumpy' best best is ASOS but again you need to watch your styles / materials!

I've got a few toast dresses but I don't they're particularly well cut for tall, mine are fairly short so wear as tunics. I've just got straight up and down types so make do. Really lovely though! And of course depends on how tall you actually are.

IJustNeedAUserName · 24/05/2018 09:18

Long Tall Sally can be really hit and miss quality-wise nowadays, though sadly the price-point remains the same!

Also depends on your shape; I’m an hourglass (ish - big boobs and hips and a defined ish waist) and I find a lot of LTS doesn’t work at all. Recently they seem to be sticking to quite ‘straight up and down’ shapes imo

OhCheersForThat · 24/05/2018 10:34

I also struggle in summer. Winter is so much easier, as a slightly shorter dress can work with tights and ankle boots.

No easy answers, I'm afraid. I had to trawl online this year just to find enough dresses to get me through at work (smart/casual dress code, so didn't have to be office wear). I absolutely fucking HATE Long Tall Sally. So incredibly frumpsville. Wish there was more choice out there for us tallies!

So far I've got: a midi wrap dress from H&M; a couple of nice knee length pencil dresses from Dotty P that look much more expensive than they are - quite LK Bennett-ish in style; a couple of pencil dresses from ASOS (have to really trawl ASOS to find stuff I like, but usually find a few things); a pencil dress from Hobbs; a summery midi dress from Phase Eight.

I sometimes have luck with midi dresses from non-tall ranges, too, depending on where the waist sits.

Feel your pain!

peonylover22 · 24/05/2018 12:12

I don’t love Long Tall Sally, I’m afraid. Maybe the dresses are better in person but not feeling very tempted by their website.
I have a waist and a definite bottom (pear shape) so dresses are much more flattering on me if they have a defined waist. But the waist needs to be on my waist, not half way up my rib cage. So I’m ideally looking for a range that is cut for taller women rather than a longer style cut for a woman of average height.
Was hoping there might be some fantastic niche brand that I hadn’t heard of!

Marisota have loads. They cater for plus sized women and the dresses seem to be better cut even in the smaller sizes.

IJustNeedAUserName · 24/05/2018 12:29

If you need a defined waist then LTS is not for you IMO. They also seem to be about a year behind high street fashion which puts them towards frumpy.

In terms of clothes shops, what I'd love is a mash-up between Bravissimo and LTS with non-frumpy designs. So cut for curvy, tall women with a defined waist. I would buy lots.

MsJinglyJones · 24/05/2018 12:48

Tall and long-bodied here. I hate the thing where the waistbands are too high - sometimes happens to me even when the dress is supposed to be "tall". So I often make my own dresses, or alter them to fit, but I have a few lovely long and well-fitting dresses. They are from Toast, Damsel in a Dress, Mango, Superdry, and Hush. Not all dresses from these brands will fit, it still depends on the style, but at least they exist!

I like it when online shops give the length of the dress, which many do. If you have a good pic of the dress and the total length, you can work out roughly how high they've put the waist as well.

Shantotto · 24/05/2018 12:50

Sadly there doesn't seem to be anything which is why I have to suffer through LTS and ASOS for the odd thing. I find DP and New look terrible quality. The reviews on LTS can be helpful and honest, could be worth a look at if there's something that might work?!

They do free returns through click and collect so you could try and see if things look better in real life?

I'm 6ft 1 and have always struggled,

Oh just thought, Gap have quite a comprehensive range of tall things, good if looking for natural fabrics and they have nice dresses some times. I live in Their skirts and jumpers, got a great summer jumpsuit last year too.

MsJinglyJones · 24/05/2018 12:51

I've never liked LTS - mostly cheap fabrics and bleh styles. I prefer online shopping despite the fitting issues, because traipsing around town trying to find the right thing is even harder.

Passthecake30 · 24/05/2018 17:42

Marking place, I'm 6ft but fairly straight up and down. Need some cotton dresses for my hols which don't make me look overdone!
I do have a navy jersey one from next tall which is nice, if very casual.

LightAsTheBreeze · 24/05/2018 18:17

Next tall might have something but they tend to be the cheaper end. I do wear the Next Tall linen mix dresses in the summer but they are quite casual

I did get a dress from Seasalt which fitted quite well, I am 5’10 though so not over tall

ISeeTheLight · 24/05/2018 18:19

I recently got some summer dresses from Monsoon which are nice.

jkl0311 · 24/05/2018 18:20

Dorothy Perkins Op

snowboardingqueen · 24/05/2018 18:22

Have you looked at JCrew. They charge for returns which is the only downside but the quality is good. I agree that most tall ranges are cheap. Other than that designer makes tend to be longer.

ISeeTheLight · 24/05/2018 18:23

Eg I got this one which is 100% cotton. I'm 5'9 and curvy, fits perfectly. It might not be your style though.

SirVixofVixHall · 24/05/2018 18:27

I get the too-high waist thing too. So annoying. I am not as tall as I’d like , just tallish. (I’m five eight), but I am also long waisted and busty, so waists can end up on my ribs. With many companies, they scale down for petites, but with talls they just add length to the hem and sleeves, when the body needs to be longer too, from shoulder to waist.

SirVixofVixHall · 24/05/2018 18:35

Agree with needing a mash up between LTS and Bravissimo. Maybe then I could find a swimsuit !
I’ve just ordered an ankle length dress from Arket, part of the H&M group but more expensive. Should be here tomorrow so I’ll report back.
Saint Bustier sell things for busty women that seem to veer towards the tall too, judging by the models. They have some nice things for fitted waists. www.saintbustier.com

4yearsnosleep · 24/05/2018 19:12

I've had a lot of luck with Boden long dresses, they fit me perfectly (pear shaped too) Next Tall I find an awful fit

peonylover22 · 24/05/2018 19:36

I have just waded through Next Tall, nothing I liked in stock in my size. Which brings me to my next moan about tall dress shopping: everything nice is out of stock! 😭
I had a peruse of J Crew the other day and there were actually a few things I liked. But they were out of stock in my size (Uk 12).
But thanks for all the suggestions, and please do post any successes!

LightAsTheBreeze · 24/05/2018 19:44

The Next tall do go out of stock quickly because their regular sizes are a bit short so people buy the tall for the extra length
