But we'll still enjoy it...

I have found the shirt-dress of my dreams...it even elicited the magic "You look very French" from Mr Maitland. (makes a change from "odd Danish person" and other kindly-meant remarks.)

www.frenchconnection.com/product/woman-collections/71kej/sunny-toggle-shirt-dress.htm

Wore it today with Uterque sandals and Mango necklace and stayed cool all day. I had to size down to a 10 which was also a pleasing boost even though I know I'm not there really...

What's new for everyone else? I am beginning to get properly excited about autumn especially the new emphasis on classics that people are going on about.

banivani · 24/07/2018 20:20

catherine that does look cool, chic and comfortable, so all the C:s!

Well the Arket dress came, was tried on and is going back. The slight kimono sleeve doesn’t fit well when you move your arms and is also more open than the pictures show so gives too big a peekaboo effect. 🙄 the ties are childish like I suspected. Looks good from the front but from the side it’s very little girl’s summer dress. Annoyingly the M fit much better than the L - the inconsistent sizing is terrible! I should be an L. Lovely fabric though, heavy swishy viscose. Like my lovely blue trousers that survived the wash brilliantly 🤗 and shrunk just a bit to a wearable length Grin

CoconutAmericano · 24/07/2018 22:57

So I discovered an addictive yt channel tonight called ‘IloveParis’. Has anyone else seen it? It’s basically loads of videos of Parisiens walking about in Paris oblivious that they are being filmed Blush but it does give a great visual insight into how the French dress. It’s not just Paris either. Cannes etc is also filmed. Oh how the other half live

MrPotatosGirlfriend · 25/07/2018 00:14

Oooh I've just brought some white broderie anglaise fabric so feeling very chic now (totally ignoring that I need to see it into a top first)

www.theguardian.com/fashion/2018/jul/24/french-girl-fashion-bardot-hardy

Have to say I'm loving the French online stores for their fabric at the moment, much edgier than what's on offer in the UK.

MrPotatosGirlfriend · 25/07/2018 00:19

Oh god, my eyes! Just scrolled down the article to the featured recommend products, my top will not look like that!

Ah a fellow orangutan Elle Grin** Seems overly long arms are quite common! I'm looking forward to trying the Reiss jacket but am worried it will be too short on the body and/or the arms.....

Catherine, that is a nice dress. I like that you have options as to how far you want to zip it up or down. I might try it on myself if I see a French Connection whilst I'm in the UK.

Bani, I always like how you describe clothes! Sorry the dress wasn't great but glad the trousers survived the wash. Just remembered I should really order that Massimo Dutti skirt with the leg split to try on. Forgot all about it!

Interesting article MrPotatos. I think it's the French hair I'm most jealous of. Looks perfect but not in that "I've just spent 10 hours in the hairdressers to look like this" way. I have a broderie anglaise dress actually but I'm not sure it looks v French! Think I will go and re-evaluate it.

SophieLion · 25/07/2018 07:06

Goodness weird bold font all over the place in that post. Not sure why my phone did that Confused

CatherineMaitland · 25/07/2018 07:49

Sophie - yes, you can zip it right up, it looks good that way too. I like the zip as buttons rarely sit right over my boobs. Think it can be dressed up a bit or down a bit too.

botemp · 25/07/2018 08:13

Checking in before I truly melt into a puddle 🤒 Seeing that I seem to time my Paris trips to verify the existence of global warming I suggest we call the next thread: Les Parisiennes de Mamansnet V (or is it VI?): Orangutans in Paris make for poor gondoliers Grin although I'm probably the only one who remembers the reference to that. (Last time we went in January/February the Seine was flooding and some baboons had escaped the zoo, as a result I was fully expecting baboons, wearing their little Bretons, to ferry tourists between the Left and Right Bank).

Have yet to do any shopping but will get on that today Halo

I did actually end up returning the Zara blouse on Sunday. I tried it on again and my hair was still up in a high bun from Pilates and it was suddenly so obvious that that collarless neckline really doesn't suit me. I'd forgotten what a good trick that is with the hair, it makes things you don't see a lot more visible instantly.

Did see the attached red brick dress at Zara when returning it and had to think of you Bani. It's new collection but wasn't very expensive at all and IIRC it was all cotton.

Never made it to the Viktor & Rolf exhibition (yes, they of the awesome Tilda Swinton muse) as it was very busy and my friend had had a bit of a trying week, so drinks nearby and a good chat was had instead and a new appointment made to see the exhibition another time.

Sophie, I've never actually looked into Vichy dermablend for myself. IIRC it's very mask like, you can even use it as a concealer apparently, but supposedly good for covering varicose veins too. Think Methen was asking after that.

I forget about Uterque all the time as well, Elle, despite being signed up to their newsletter. I think if there was a shop nearby I'd be in there all the time but weirdly they're mostly in the Middle East outside of Spain.

My graduation dress was from Sportmax, my grandmother (the not so fashion and style interested one) still talks of it with a tone of awe often whenever I see her. Agree it hasn't been the same as it used to be WRT fabrics though I find the selection is better in Italy as they have a larger collection out on display. I think there's a standalone store here for Sportmax, may have to go an browse.

Like the new dress, Catherine. Still Envy of the Uterque shoes.

Coconut, yes, I unfairly called it a voyeuristic stalker channel when someone first mentioned it on here but I had mixed it up with another less savoury one that, rightfully, has been removed from YT. I do like the iloveparis one as it's very style focused. Being in Paris has given me some interesting new French channels to explore on YT, including one which covers thousands of ways to do that effortless low chignon. I'll have to remember to link it later.

MrPotato, I saw that article too and thought it was a bit Hmm, especially the cliche selection. Had to laugh at the brief detour to Italy as we had that on here as well.

On a tangent there was another style article in the Guardian where I saw a nice ring from Oliver Bonas, don't know the brand at all, only ever heard of it on here is the jewellery any good in real life? It's a bit in that ambiguous price range, could be overpriced cheap tat or just a step above that like Cos.

Hope you and yours are safe and not finding too much hinder with all the fires, btw, Sophie Flowers

botemp · 25/07/2018 08:20

Sorry, meant to attach pics for Bani but it doesn't seem to want to post when I try. Will give it another go later.

quirkychick · 25/07/2018 08:37

Coconut I like ILoveParis too, I particularly enjoyed some of the over 40s ones 2hich celebrated women's individual style. There was another channel called Not Even French (I think) with an Australian woman and an English woman who looked very french talking about Parisian style. What was really interesting was the idea that dressing in an overtly extravagant way in France was associated with being aristocratic and non egalitarian, as a legacy from the French Revolution. I think here in the UK, we have the opposite cultural association where extravagance can be deemed "flashy" and the opposite of discreet good taste.

banivani · 25/07/2018 09:36

This one Bo? This is just like my grey one but BETTER with v-neck! I don't love the colour tbh though. And the options are beige and black. So disappointing! WHERE IS MY DEEP RED AND BOTTLE GREEN. OR EVEN NAVY BLUE. Obv I'm going to get the black one though. Grin I might get two, one for safekeeping.

Thank you Sophie for your kind words - sure if I don't take selfies I may as well use my language ;)

botemp · 25/07/2018 09:54

Bani, it's this one. Less pink IRL though. Hope the regional settings thing don't mess up the link. It's a 100% organic cotton even, I'm shocked Zara.

banivani · 25/07/2018 10:00

Oh that jurk is also lovely and very much the same thing! Framboos is not my colour though so I wouldn't get it. Well, might suit me ok now that I'm so tanned ;) but generally I'm not comfortable in pastels. So again, WHY do they not have MAH KLEURS.

botemp · 25/07/2018 10:04

It's really not that colour IRL, the one I saw is a brick/terracotta red. But seeing as they're 100% cotton they shouldn't be that hard to dye a darker deep red?

banivani · 25/07/2018 10:06

I wonder if it's socially acceptable to just wear the same type of dress in variations of black and mole forever or will I look like the founder of my own cult.

banivani · 25/07/2018 10:06

The seams don't dye though IME and the colour difference annoys me. But for the prices it's worth a try ...

botemp · 25/07/2018 10:09

No for a cult you just need to wear white all the time. Or possibly that cardigan, if you manage to get followers with that you know they're dedicated Wink

banivani · 25/07/2018 10:13

I've had to pay for the flipping cardigan btw so it's being sent to me now. A lovely gift to charity when it arrives.

SophieLion · 25/07/2018 12:39

Grin I didn't even notice that the Zara shirt was collarless, Bo!
I think I must have seen or read about the Vichy derma blend as I in my head it is very thick and more of a concealer. Of course I went to the pharmacy this morning and forgot to look.

Oh just lost a whole load of text Angry I think it was about Uterque (which we have here) but can't be bothered to write it again.

Thanks for asking about the fires, Bo. It's absolutely terrible and so very sad. We are fine but I have friends who have evacuated their houses and one almost lost his house (the next door neighbour's was burnt down but by some miracle he only appears to have minor damage). The news is just full of people searching for missing relatives and friends Sad

Madamfrog · 25/07/2018 13:32

Dermablend is specially for covering up marks like portwine stains, that sort of thing. And obviously you can use it for whatever you like.

SophieLion · 25/07/2018 14:18

Thanks Madamfrog (I like your username!). I guess seems blend must be pretty heavy duty then.

SophieLion · 25/07/2018 14:18
  • Derma (not seems)
banivani · 25/07/2018 14:24

Oh Sophie, I'd missed that you were in Greece - so sorry for you all, it must be traumatic. I'm shocked at how little coverage we've had in the news of this here - granted we have fires too but they're not in very populated areas for the most part and we seem to be getting a lot of EU resources. The pictures from Greece are terrible.

SophieLion · 25/07/2018 15:05

Yes Bani. It really is terrible. So many homeless. So many missing. People are being asked to donate blankets, toiletries, clothes etc so I want to give.

I think news coverage in Europe has been patchy. I've had a lot of people send me messages today when it happened two days ago (although a cousin in the US contacted me the day it happened). Plus I read at least two UK newspapers which said a contributing factor was a very dry winter in Athens when actually it was one of the wettest winters we've had for a long time.
