How to Look Expensive (in the summer)

Please can we resurrect my favourite EVER thread, but with a summer twist?

I think I'm pretty stylish in cooler weather but struggle in the heat.

I know the usual drill ..natural fabrics, linen cotton silk in neutral colours. Light tan courtesy of gradual tanner. Tan real leather sandals. Straw or heavy cotton beach bag. No gaudy colours or prints. No bra strap showing under vests.

But I still feel I don't look as good as I could if I tried a bit harder! I get freckly and I think that stops me looking expensive!

Please tell me your tips and stories of fab expensive looking stylish people you've seen on holiday

Also I don't have an argument for using sunbeds and never once said I did. I clearly stated I know it's not a good idea.
People can make their own choices in life and not once did I force my opinion on anyone, unlike some.

IwankaTramp · 21/05/2018 09:07

You have a sensivity chip missing. A poster describes losing people to melanoma in an obviously very upsetting account and your response is to choose to call them a hypocrite focussing instead previous tan bed usage.

The contrast between the vanity of wanting to look a bit orange and the real implications of potentially developing skin cancer seems to have caused an overload.

You are pushing your agenda re tanning beds by even mentioning for vanity reasons rather than medical -even though you used that as your opener.

The argument that lots of people from all walks of life use them is equally vacuous. Ignorance comes in all shapes and sizes.

It is not classy to refer to people as bitches/chavs. Try extending your vocabulary and knowledge.

freezerfoodyum · 21/05/2018 09:24

You never know you could develop liver disease from the 5 bottles of wine you get through a week but that's your life, I wouldn't be lecturing you haha... bye

I don't drink love.

mtpicasso · 21/05/2018 09:25

Please stop derailing this fabulous thread! Let's go back to talking about clothes 😬

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 09:25

It's also not classy to presume I am sitting with a Bacardi breezer and fake nails! Because I use a sunbed.
Also when was I trying to "push my agenda"?
What is it I need to extend my knowledge of here? I am perfectly aware of the risks of using sunbeds.
There is no other word I would use for people that attack other women because they don't agree with something they chose to do.
The difference is you probably know people that use sunbeds, you just are not aware, you wouldn't say any of this to their face though.
As always with mumsnet middle class snobbery and assuming that a person is uneducated.
I don't agree with smoking, drinking and a great deal of other things but I would never attack someone for doing any of these things as this is a personal choice they make and I don't have the right to judge or look down my nose at them.
P.s I did not refer to anyone as a chav.

Neither do I "love"

IwankaTramp · 21/05/2018 09:35

Agreed- let’s get back to clothes etc rather than the utterings of an ignoramus.

Here are my new purchases. I have started buying my clothes in my actual size rather than a size up as since I entered my 40's I need things to be fitted and high rise.

You should stop posting then

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 09:51

Will also say there was no need for you to even comment on what I said if you didn't want to attack me and derail this thread you wouldn't have. Any chance to jump down someone's throat clearly gets you going. Like I said your name says it all

Back to sandals.

Inspired by this thread I have been searching for tan sandals. There are few few in the shops, and the only ones I have seen I thought were hideous. Most sandals in the shops right now are just bling central, and I haven't seen any that I like better than my trusty 5 year old black Earth Spirit sandals (pictured)

I like those sandals collywobbles, but they are only available in wide fitting. I tried them on but they were too loose on my feet.

Jonbb thos sandals look like they wouldn’t stay on my feet. They don’t look very comfortable to me either as I need a bit of arch support.

The only other ones I like the look of (online) are these

Opinions anyone?

I got these the other day they are comfortable and simple as I also do not like bling either.
They are more cushioned than they look.

They don't have much arch support though, just noticed that was something you were looking for.

LoniceraJaponica · 21/05/2018 10:10

Where are they from TheWhale?

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 10:12

I got mine from Debenhams but the label is "head over heels" so there are a few places that sell them.

IwankaTramp · 21/05/2018 10:21

They are cheap, plastic crap. Not good for feet.

user1499173618 · 21/05/2018 10:23

“Looking expensive” in summer is harder than in winter because it is dependent on glowing skin, a toned body and fabulous personal hygiene/grooming. These things are lengthy, hard and expensive to achieve for all but the most genetically blessed.

Haha clearly I've touched a nerve with you. Now you have to start insulting a pair of sandals.
If you haven't already done so you are definitely showing your true colours now.
You had no need to comment on that. I wasn't directly talking to you or making any comment about you but you can't seem to help yourself.

BadTasteFlump · 21/05/2018 11:01

Blimey this thread's taken a turn since I was last here - happy Monday everything Grin

On another matter - what do people think of these?

I've been trying the style on that seems to be 'on trend' at the moment - ie with one or two plain horizontal straps across them - but they just don't seem to look right on me - maybe because I have big feet and the straps make them look even wider/bigger?

I'm ok with toe posts btw. Just wondered if those sandals look too 'footy?'

BadTasteFlump · 21/05/2018 11:04

BTW I know they're not supportive but I'm not planning on using them for any long hikes - I have my trusty Nike Airs for that Smile

marmiteloversunite · 21/05/2018 11:11

I tried on nearly every sandal in Westfield on a Saturday. Ended up with these ugg ones. Comfy with a spongy sole. Really pleased with them but probably would have preferred them without Ugg on the front.

I have the same problem I like those sort of sandals but feel they just don't look the same I me as other people, my feet are a size 8 and I always tend to go for sandals with lots of straps. I also find sandals with few steps hard to walk in!

BadTasteFlump · 21/05/2018 11:23

I'm an 8 too - I am tall and in RL other people tell me my feet don't look big, but when I look down I just see big old canoes Grin

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 11:39

I know! People always tell me the same but I don't believe them. I suppose our feet are in ratio with out height, well that's what I tell myself Grin

LoniceraJaponica · 21/05/2018 11:39

I like those Ugg ones Marmite.
