How to Look Expensive (in the summer)

diamondsandrose · 11/05/2018 15:27

Please can we resurrect my favourite EVER thread, but with a summer twist?

I think I'm pretty stylish in cooler weather but struggle in the heat.

I know the usual drill ..natural fabrics, linen cotton silk in neutral colours. Light tan courtesy of gradual tanner. Tan real leather sandals. Straw or heavy cotton beach bag. No gaudy colours or prints. No bra strap showing under vests.

But I still feel I don't look as good as I could if I tried a bit harder! I get freckly and I think that stops me looking expensive!

Please tell me your tips and stories of fab expensive looking stylish people you've seen on holiday

Banana Republic do good classic white shirts.

IreneDunne · 19/05/2018 21:47

The Shirt Company are also good for a crisp white shirt.

LandOfOddSocks · 19/05/2018 21:55

Those are fantastic @IreneDunne! Smile

KnownUnknowns · 20/05/2018 08:44

@Irenedunne Thank you! Brilliant website.

LandOfOddSocks · 20/05/2018 13:37

And a great discount at the moment. Smile

At the risk of being given into trouble here, have you tried sunbed? I was like you I'm very pale always a struggle to get a light enough shade of foundation, in the summer I never tanned just burned and came out in a horrible reaction to the sun and would get red blotchy itchy sores on my arms and chest. My partner started going for sunbeds to help his psoriasis and he persuaded me to go for a couple. Best thing ever, don't go loads maybe once a fortnight, but now I don't need to worry about patchy embarrassing take tan also haven't broken out in the rash for 2 years! And no longer do I have the worry of not having pale enough foundation. I know they are not the best idea but doctors have been known to advise sunbed for some skin conditions.

MrsMariaPolouvicka · 20/05/2018 15:04

Psoriasis is a horrible skin condition which can sometimes be alleviated or improved by sun exposure. The risk of skin cancer is still the same but for some people really suffering with the condition, it's a case of balancing risk vs benefit, which the Doctor will have explained to your partner.

You don't have any such condition, and as you say you are pale skinned, the only one you are ever going to develop is melanoma.

For all the ridiculous comments about skin colour on this thread, this is the worst. Don't be such an idiot.

diamondsandrose · 20/05/2018 18:25

Pretty confident the posters on this thread are far too sensible to follow your advice thewhale thank goodness Hmm

Please please stop the sunbeds before you risk giving yourself a malignant melanoma or best case prematurely aged and wrinkled skin.
It really is a terrible idea.
A good gradual tanner used carefully should never streak and more importantly will not impact on your health!

I'm loving this thread!

Another one here with a tiny budget and a filled to brimming wardrobe full of cheapo stuff I just don't love.

BendyLikeBeckham · 20/05/2018 20:11

best thing is, Ive clicked on all the links and now my page ads are all lovely expensive sandals and palazzo pants!

You both need to calm down. You would be shocked at the amount of people who use them.
New it wouldn't be long until the sunbed police came out haha.

fleuriepeninsula · 21/05/2018 05:55

Sun beds are illegal in Australia and Brazil. They are actually quite dangerous as the risk of malignant melanoma is so much higher. Hopefully no one on this thread will be silly enough to take your advice.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/05/2018 06:47

There’s a sunbed shop on our high street, it’s really busy too.

The customers are very wrinkly. As is the owner.

On the one hand I’d like to see them banned, on the other if I owned a beauty salon I’d have them as it’s basically a cash machine.

Fluffycloudland77 · 21/05/2018 06:48

It’s “knew”, not “new”.

freezerfoodyum · 21/05/2018 06:50

I wouldn't be, judging by skin cancer rates.

Gwenhwyfar · 21/05/2018 06:58

" don't go loads maybe once a fortnight"

That's a lot.
One of my greatest regrets in life is that I went on the sunbed when I was younger.
As this is S&B, let's appeal to your vanity. Even if you don't think it will give you skin cancer, you know it's very ageing.

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 08:03

Gwenhwyfar
Are you calling yourself vain? Apparently that's the only reason I would go for sunbed because I'm some ignorant self obsessed woman. Yet you just stated you used sunbeds? Hypocrite.
Also, Fluffycloudland77 I realise it's "knew" not "new" that's what you call a typing mistake, keep correcting people though, you come across lovely. Amazing how a group of women turn into such bitches sitting it their house on their phones.
MrsMariaPolouvicka, when my partner develops skin cancer I'll be sure to sue the doctors that recommended it too him.

MrsMariaPolouvicka · 21/05/2018 08:05

Thewhale2903 No, I won't calm down thank you very much. I know two people who died of melanoma, in both cases it spread to their brain. They spent the last months of their lives in the knowledge they were going to die from an horrific seizure which could occur at any time, possibly in front of their partners, children or friends.

Whilst their bodies were bloated and distorted from the cocktail of hard drugs, I'm sure they were thankful that despite all that they didn't have to worry about those patchy "embarrassing" fake tan marks.

Anyway really sorry to derail the thread, I won't be back. As you were.

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 08:14

MrsMariaPolouvicka
Hmm you still went though until that happened. Like I said hypocrite.
Do you think that story gives you the right right to jump down peoples throat and get nasty?
Did they both develop melanoma because they were regular sunbed users or Sun worshipers then?

Paintbox · 21/05/2018 08:15

WHale, you’re coming across as ridiculous. Pp isn’t a hypocrite simply because she said she went in sunbeds when she was younger and regrets it. Saying sunbeds are bad in that situation does not make er a hypocrite. And as for your sarcastic comment about your husband and his doctors, he has a condition, you were just recommending sunbeds for someone who is pale! That’s what posters are having a go at you for

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 08:35

Well I think it's ok to let people make their own choices in life and not judge, when they are not harming anyone else.
Typical group of woman get together and turn into a bunch of street cats.
You never know you could develop liver disease from the 5 bottles of wine you get through a week but that's your life, I wouldn't be lecturing you haha... bye

IwankaTramp · 21/05/2018 08:35

Whale have you cracked an acrylic nail -with a charming sunset scene with added diamanté features?

Something else is going on with you. Put down that Bacardi breezer.....

MrsMariaPolouvicka · 21/05/2018 08:36

I never, ever said I used a sun bed. For the record I never have and never will. Perhaps another pp but not me.

Because I am fair and pale skinned, have lots of moles which have to be checked at the hospital regularly and because my health is more important to me than my vanity.

IwankaTramp · 21/05/2018 08:46

There is a distinct difference between making harmful choices personally and doing that in full knowledge of likely consequence and the advocating it to others and minimising risk.

We don’t live in bubbles either so these individuals choices impact on others, from the palliative care nurses to family members and larger society who pick up the cost of treatment and care.

On both points re individual choice and not impacting on others your argument is flimsy. That is being kind.

Thewhale2903 · 21/05/2018 08:47

IwankaTramp
Your name says it all.
I don't drink, think I've had a set of nails once in my life for a wedding where I was maid of honour.
Why would you presume I was some sort of chav because I use sunbeds once a fortnight? I used fake tan for years and hated it!
I know people from all walks of life who use sunbeds, nurses, head teacher, shop manager, builders, housewifes.
You are coming across as very snobby with that comment.
