Advice before getting highlights done tomorrow

I'm having highlights done tomorrow. Last time I had them done I asked them to do more ash tones as before it was looking orangey and brassy before. So they used ash tones but they looked incredibly bright when first done. They looked almost yellow against my brown hair!

What should I ask for to prevent this again tomorrow? I just want my brown hair with grey roots to be lifted and lightened but to look fairly natural and not bright stripes glowing in the dark! I can't seem to get it right, before it was too warm and oranges yesterday and then it was too harsh and yellow.
Help please.

Oh dear this is what scares me! Sorry I’m no help, I would’ve thought a good colourist would know instinctively what colours to use?

Honey1975 · 10/05/2018 20:13

Thing is it looks ok now after 4 months but the first few weeks I just thought it looked too obvious if you know what I mean. I just want a natural lightened look but it seems it is difficult to achieve!

I understand. Yet there are thousands of perfect highlighted hair pics on the internet! Who does their hair?? Where are the experts??

Honey1975 · 10/05/2018 20:44

Exactly Money, I have saved several Pinterest images saying that is what I want but it never quite looks like them!

Wouldn’t caramel be better against brown hair? I’ve fallen in love with lots of caramel highlights on brown hair pics. They blend in well yet light enough to add dimension and break it up. I’ve been looking into this for years before I take the plunge GrinBlush

Will you post pics after?

Ask your colourist to use a toner, that should avoid the too bright yellow colour.

Mines never gone yellow and I am naturally dark. The stylist needs to use a toner.

Just use a purple shampoo when you get home. Won't affect the colour of your brown, but it will tone your highlights.

I have 2 colours, a very light blonde and a caramel. I think they do 2 caramel to every 1 blonde to get a more natural finish. It does build up though, the more you have it done the blonder the ends.

Baby is your natural colour quite dark? I like the sound of the caramel and light blonde.

Sorry just seen your reply! My natural colour is a medium brown. What did you go for in the end? Are you pleased with it?
