Flat strappy sandals with a bit of cushioning in the sole

Is anyone prepared to take on the challenge of helping me find some nice sandals for summer, for everyday wear?

I have abnormally little padding on the soles of my feet (wish I could transfer some from my thighs Grin so I find the very thin, hard soles on most sandals is very harsh to walk on.

They need to have at least a thin strap across the back to help keep them on my feet and a few straps across the foot (I've seen a lot that just seem to have one strap up the middle of the foot and then around the ankle - I don't think these would work for me).

My budget is roughly £60.

Any suggestions appreciated!

For context, I threw away my one pair of sandals last year which wear 11 years old. I have looked around the shops the past few summers and drawn a bit of a blank. But don't let my pickiness put you off - I need help!

I got the Moshulu peach melba (quite high wedges) the leather is so soft and comfortable I'm blown away. The soles are cushioned and so lovely to walk on. I'm a convert!

i have flat feet and cant wear a shoe with a built in arch as it’s too uncomfortable. I wonder what a podiatrist would say to people like me🤔

MsAdorabelleDearheartVonLipwig · 10/05/2018 11:14

Let us know how you get on Op.

The Seasalt Sunny Cove sandals arrived and don’t fit me at all Sad Straps aren’t adjustable so I think it’s just luck whether they fit or not. My feet are slightly wide (not massively so) and I wonder if they’d fit narrow feet better.

NameChange30 · 11/05/2018 11:30

Hope you have better luck with your orders, OP.

My Moshulu sandals arrived today.

I like them a lot and will definitely end up owning a pair, but no pair of this order was perfect so they've all gone back. I ordered:

Wasabi size 5 tan
Wasabi size 6 pink
Ginger Ale size 5 turquoise

My feet are somewhere between a 5.5 and 6.

The size 5 Wasabi are a pretty good fit for my narrow feet. They are fractionally too short but a nice fit width ways and feel comfortable. But I really don't like the tan colour. It is cacky compare to the rich tan picture on the website.

The size 6 Wasabi are far too wide over my foot so my foot moves around too much in them. The pink is jolly but possibly slightly cheap looking as it is so very very bright fuchsia.

The thing I really like about the Wasabi is that they feel cushioned enough under foot without having that 'support sandal' look. They're pretty! And the leather is soft and won't take much wearing in.

The Ginger Ale bluey colour is lovely. These look nice on my feet and will be a real hit for some of you I think but I have flat feet and the arch support dug too much into the arch (or lack thereof) on my foot.

If anyone wants Fitflops, MNHQ have just shared a 15% discount code: MUM15 (thread here)

I’ve just ordered some black Strata sandals. We shall see.

TidyLike · 11/05/2018 19:09

I was coveting some Birkenstock Mayaris, but they looked awful on me because my feet are too wide. Love them on other people though. They don't have a strap across the back but the front straps are adjustable and they felt very securely attached when I tried them on.

NameChange30 · 11/05/2018 19:43

@tidylike
I’ve pretty much lived in Mayaris every summer for years! They’re so comfy and I like the style. I was looking for a change as mine are a bit tatty now but actually might just buy a new pair in a different colour.

AlanRickmansRightFoot · 12/05/2018 08:22

It's the holy grail. I've not found anything I like enough in Moshulu, Saltwater, Fitflop, Hotter, Clarks and numerous others recommended here, mainly because my feet are a weird shape, fairly massive and I'm fussy.

Did just get a pair from Ugg that I think may be the winner, but they were not cheap! I've found in the past that they are well made for the price tbf.

XiCi · 12/05/2018 09:16

I love the seasalt sunny Cove sandals as well. Really comfortable and look great on. I've had mine a few years now and they've really lasted well. Just ordered another pair today, they're on offer at £20 which is a massive bargain

TalkingOrmer · 12/05/2018 10:17

I’ve just bought these from a local shop and they’re really comfy.

Pythone · 12/05/2018 11:08

I got these because of the cushioned sole and they seem good so far! A few reviewers on the Boden site have talked about the heel strap slipping down, but that hasn't happened to mine yet.

Fintress · 13/05/2018 10:10

Office have a style practically the same as the Boden one, only difference is the closed in heel. I tried them on and they were really comfortable but my normal size was too big. www.office.co.uk/view/search?search=hallie

Bourgainvillia · 13/05/2018 13:09

For comfortable sandals I like low-mid wedge heel style such as these low wedges or slightly higher like these wedge heels

Depends if you like toe posts or straps, I prefer straps but each to their own style. The important thing for me is a bit of a wedge heel for comfort.

Bourgainvillia · 15/05/2018 18:24

How did you get on INeedNewShoes, any luck yet? Some pics of what you found would be good!

NameChange30 · 15/05/2018 20:20

I went to a Moshulu shop today.

Having looked online, I thought many of the sandals were very similar to Birkies, but the soles are very different - they are soft (memory foam apparently!) rather than the hard soles of Birkies. They are narrower than Birkies though. Good if you have narrow feet but not if you have slightly wide feet like me. The shop assistant told me that Ginger Ale is a slightly wider style than the others.

The Wasabis are lovely and only slightly snug around my toes, and I thought the leather might give a bit so I’ve bought them. I think I’ll try them on again before deciding whether or not to keep them.

INeedNewShoes · 15/05/2018 21:13

AnotherEmma - have a good walk around in the Wasabis in the house before you wear them outside.

I bought a pair of Wasabis on eBay in the end and I am really disappointed that after wearing them out of the house today I noticed that the sole does not have enough cushioning (in my view).

I'd gone for the pink ones so they'll do when I want something a bit brighter and look nice but when I don't have to walk much.

I've just ordered some Teva Kayentas in black to try so we'll see what I think of those when they turn up. I think I'm starting to accept that if I want sandals I can comfortably walk a couple of miles in then they might need to be 'walking' sandals rather than fashion sandals.

This seems like a massive dripfeed now(!) but a few years ago I sustained stress fractures in two different metatarsals in one of my feet, just from walking around London in ballet flats too much so I am very wary of walking far in shoes that feel hard under foot.

NameChange30 · 15/05/2018 21:48

Thank you, will do. I got the red ones and they’re a gorgeous colour but I probably wouldn’t wear them if I had to do loads of walking. I’ve come to the conclusion that I need several new pairs of sandals Grin

I sent some Tevas back as I didn’t like the style but they were very comfortable indeed. DH has some that he finds comfortable.

NameChange30 · 15/05/2018 21:49

Ballet flats are lethal aren’t they?!
Stress fractures sounds painful Sad

SwedishEdith · 15/05/2018 23:08

Art shoes might be worth trying.

Muddlingalongalone · 15/05/2018 23:10

Have you tried earth spirit? I had a pair I loved, so softly cushioned. Casual though.

Bourgainvillia · 16/05/2018 18:48

Emma, yes Tevas are a bit like hush puppies imo.

NameChange30 · 16/05/2018 20:48

My Fitflop Strata sandals arrived and they’re gorgeous. Stylish (never thought I’d say that about Fitflops!!) and comfortable. I ordered two sizes and the bigger one fits best (shame they don’t do half sizes though as I think the half size would have been perfect).
