Hair colour advice please!

I colour my hair at home. My natural hair colour is chestnut brown, and I've been using a similar colour (mainly to cover grey!) for about a year. I think it's looking slightly too dark and is making me look washed out. It's been about 2 months since I coloured it, can I go straight over the top with a colour that's one shade lighter? I've found conflicting advice when I google it so not sure what to do. Don't want a dramatic change, just a tiny bit lighter.

I don't think the lighter shade will lighten the hair that is already coloured so you would have lighter roots and darker ends

It's likely to go darker. The only way to go lighter is strip the colour with a colour remover and then go light brown over the top or use a product with peroxide in it. I've had disasters with that! Safer to remove colour.

Ah ok. That's what I was wondering. Thanks!
