Would you buy it for £800?

It's a 2008 release - supposedly the best year. But the lining is ripped.

More damage, this time to the stitching in the leather

balenciga or not, who would pay that much for a 9 year old ripped second hand jacket, save your money for a better one.

Hard to tell without seeing how amazing the jacket is itself.

But I'm thinking big fat no.

No!

Once the lining has started to go it’ll continue to go. I bought a Reiss jacket in a charity shop discounted to a fiver because it had rips in the lining (I loved it enough to overlook the flaws) and after a year's wear the entire lining is just shreds…which is fine because it was a fiver. All my jackets with rips in the lining have been the same - once they go they go everywhere.

If it was one hundred quid and you loved it then you could get the entire lining replaced professionally, but eight hundred quid is mad, surely.

How much are they new ? If you like it and can afford it you should buy it.. you can get it relined for about £100 when it goes .

RiskIt4Biscuit · 03/05/2018 12:09

I'd consider it only if it was the one jacket I had been looking for for years and if the damage was only to the lining - as it can be changed.

Any damage to the leather or stitches on the outside would make me walk away.

It is very expensive for such an old jacket, which clearly is very worn - the lining is ripped, there is damage to the stitches and significant bagginess in the elbows due to being worn by the previous owner.

You can find Balenciaga leather jackets cheaper on Vestiaire Collective as well.

In short: No.

DrowningEveryDay · 03/05/2018 15:11

The jacket isn’t being made anymore so no new ones. There are some made in recent years but the leather supposedly pale in comparison to the ones made in 2008. My size does not come often so I am tempted since I really have not come across ‘08 made in my size prior to this.

However I do find it very expensive for a ripped jacket.

Also the stitching damage is making me think twice too — as it probably will come off.

I don't know much about Balenciaga's leathers, so I can't tell you anything about the quality of 2008 products vs. newer products.

However, I would think, with Balenciaga being a high end brand, that their leather is not terrible, even if it is less good than the products from 2008.

Do you know what the difference is between the leather quality? How much worse are the leathers used in more recent years? And frankly, does it really matter to you?

Are you keen on buying this 10 year old ripped and worn jacket because it is significantly better than a newer, less worn jacket from the same brand?

DrowningEveryDay · 03/05/2018 15:41

Actually I have the 2007 made one and it’s very good. The leather is soft and pillowy and basically just fantastic. It’s in good condition too and I got it cheaper than the price of this one! The difference apparently is in the black colour - 2008 is jet black as opposed to 2007’s soft black.

Apparently the best years are 2007 and 2008. The recent years - 2011 up, aren’t that good. I have not seen 2008 but just something I was learned from some collectors.
