Am struggling to get box dyes to cover grey, where would I buy this dye? Also what do I mix it with and finally I'm after a light to medium brown with no red in It, any colour suggestions?
Thank you mumsnetters!

You can usually get it from Sally Services stores. I am not very knowledgable about the brown colours, having used red myself, but the assistants should be able to help.

Frankiewears · 30/04/2018 19:10

I have bought mine from EBay or Amazon. You mix it with cream peroxide 20 vol (which you can buy huge bottles of) ratio of 1 part Majirel to 1.5 parts peroxide- so if you use 10 ml of Majirel you need 15 ml of the peroxide.

Other stuff you need to order is a plastic tint bowl and brush and gloves.

For light brown with no red you are looking at 6.1 or 6.2 .Google swatches to get a clearer idea.

I am not a hairdresser but have used this stuff loads and it is much better than any box dye in terms of coverage and hair condition afterwards.

Shade indication...

I think I will go for shade 5, as it's a bit lighter. I can't find it on Amazon, does anyone have a link to Sally stores?
Thanks for your replys

Deffo on amazon I buy my majeral from there x

princessbear80 · 30/04/2018 21:17

I think the numbering goes the other way - so 5 is darker than 6, 7 is lighter. I haven’t done it yet but have been looking in to it as my hair is so grey these days and the salon is very expensive when I need it every 4 weeks!

princessbear80 · 30/04/2018 21:22

There’s been some good threads on this before, here’s one I found useful to explain the different shades:

I've used Majirel for years - for a lovely cool brown that isn't too dark you can mix 2/3 6.1 with 1/3 7.1

kmuss · 30/04/2018 21:55

Thanks for your messages. Have gone for 5 which is plain light brown and bought off eBay as they sell it with peroxide in a pack.
Wish me luck!

Beware that their single number colours are quite warm and that their level 5 is particularly dark. You'll get a lovely dark brown without the red tones if you mix 1/2 5 and 1/2 6.1

TittyGolightly · 01/05/2018 08:00

Majirel = L’Oréal = nestle (if you’re a boycotter)

DBoo · 01/05/2018 08:03

Dont use the 5. You really want a 7. 5 eill look almost black. 7 is definitely light brown. 6 is a mid brown which you would probably find dark if you are usually light brown. I think you will hate 5 and it will be hard to come back from. Can you post a pic of your current hair colour?

kmuss · 01/05/2018 13:40

Thank you so much Dboo and another roadside, I will take a photo when I get a moment later.
I definitely want a light brown colour but anything with reds goes really brassy on my hair.

As someone posted earlier the number before the dot is the shade so number 10 would be very light blonde. 9 light blonde. 8 blonde. 7 dark blonde. 6 light brown. 5. Medium brown. 4 dark brown and so on but they always go darker on your hair and i would definitely say 7 which is classed as a dark blonde is definitely more a light brown.

The numbers after the dots indicate the tone so 1 is ash. I think 3 is gold. 4 and 5 are red / coppery tones so you definitely do not want for example 7.4 or 7.5.

I always find 7.7 to be a nice light brown shade with no red / copper tones but cant remember what the 7 is. Ni would say it is a hazel-ish colour.

MadisonMontgomery · 01/05/2018 16:13

Is it always 20 vol peroxide? I know what shade I am from the hairdressers but not sure what vol peroxide you need, does it differ with different shades?

DBoo · 01/05/2018 17:49

Not always. It deoenda on what colour your hair is that you are dieing. If your hair is around the same base so e.g. you are a medium brown and you are using a base 6 dye you would use 20vol (6%). If you wanted to go to base 9 e.g. light blonde so lifting it 3 shades then you would use a stronger peroxide 30 vol (9%) or 40 vol (12%).

MadisonMontgomery · 01/05/2018 17:52

Ahh thank you. My hair is dark brown and I’m just dying it the same colour to cover up the greys!

kmuss · 01/05/2018 18:39

This is current shade. I'm thinking something along the 7 line would be more in keeping?

Here’s a link to the instructions - education.lorealprofessionnel.com.au/uploads/essentials/Essential_Colour_Guide.pdf

Honestly the 5 will be really dark. I have naturally darker brown hair (well aside from the grey!) and find the cool 6 slightly on the dark side when I first colour it.

Knitella · 01/05/2018 19:17

I’ve just seen your pic - i’d go 7 Smile

DBoo · 01/05/2018 19:20

Yep definitely a 7. Id look at 7.7 for definite.

CarpeVitam · 01/05/2018 19:54

@ DBoo. Interesting...

I've just ordered Majirel 5.18 Cool Cover. Reading no this I'm thinking it must get be too dark for a light brown result? What could I mix with it!

TIA

CarpeVitam · 01/05/2018 19:55

^ @DBoo

CarpeVitam · 01/05/2018 20:07

That's meant to say, I think it might be too dark!

DBoo · 01/05/2018 20:08

You could buy a base 6 and use 3/4 of the 6 then add 1/4 of the 5 colour. It will still be fairly dark though but would probably fade slightly over a few weeks. Do you have a photo of your colour?
